Unsung hero away to Victory last week. Sure, Polenz had a flashy tackle to stop Nabbout, but more threats came from Melbourne's left wing than their right. He was rock-solid.

Hmmm...only 3 posts in the D'Apuzzo thread...is he that much under our radar? Or is he not getting anywhere near the attention he should. I guess his combo with Bridge isn't as good as that between Hersi and Polenz, but seems to me when fit he is always there with the goods. In fact I'd go far as to say his overall defensive awareness is consistently a little better than Polenz...it's just that Jerome has done better with some big moments and has more go forward.

Big improver in my books. Our defence had a slight weakness down the left hand side at the beginning of the season. That no longer exists. Our team is nearly complete. Would just need a strong, goal scoring striker to top it off.

 

I actually think that him and Bridge are the two big improvers in our team. Hence our left side is becoming just as threatening as our right side in attack.

I really like D'apuzzo, but I think that he really needs a quicker player in front of him than Bridge... Bridge isn't playing badly, and he isn't that slow. But the fact that both of them are fairly slow players combines to make that a really slow area for a flank...

I see where you're coming from JamCal,and where I think the issue is that D'Apuzzo fits more into a true defensive back whereas Polenz will race up on the outside of Hersi and give him the feed or support past half way. Bridge tends to dominate possession on his flank from around the back third boundary all the way through midfield then on to the oppo box. I've seen a different approach when La Rocca or Cole are on the left flank in D'Apuzzo's role/position...they tend to follow or pace alongside Bridge, who is still perhaps a little too keen to waver with the ball in his own possession.

 

Having said that I have a shiteload of confidence whenever the ball gets anywhere near our box on the left side, and when NTS and D'Apuzzo square off against their oppos the result more often than not goes our way.

Bridge's lack of pace is compensated by his ability to hold/shield the ball against any oncoming defender, and then come up with something extremely creative (like an inside pass to Shinji/Poljak or a jink and run for himself) . He is one of the best players in the comp at shielding the ball, and has a good low sense of gravity. His combo with Shinji is priceless.

 

I think people also underestimate his pace. I have seen him several times get around defenders this season. Saying that, his main weakness can be laziness or complacency (or sometimes I think he tends to shoot too much for no reason), but Popa has done well with him this season.

He has improved a lot in the last few matches. Victory game he did extremely well.

And to take it full circle, he's been a little poor in the last few matches. I think he might get dropped for Cole against Heart.

Really Mack? Admittedly you've probably been watching the games closer than I have, but I've seen D'apuzzo do little wrong...? What are your reasons for saying that? (non-confrontational, genuinely curious) 

have to agree. just seems to be lacking the touch/making poor decisions going forward. got beaten quite a number of times last week i remember. not sure about his defensive efforts this week though.

He seems to be getting caught in possession, and his attacking movement has been less than fluent, there have been a number of occasions where he should be bombing on but he's in a no-man's land that isn't alongside the central defenders, but isn't up with his wing partner.

I totally agree, he got caught in possesion several times on sunday and seems to spent too much time on the ball and he then got caught with no option other than take the ball inside where most of the opposition players were?

Cole is 10 time worse in defense. He can't defend at all. Gives the oppositon players miles of room to get around him. Cole is an attacking mid at best.

 

Either D'Appuzzo or La Rocca have to play at left back for me. The thing you have to realise as well is that opposition teams work us out after a while. Even Polenz has been prone to a few mistakes in the last few games.

Having now watched the game I thought D'Apuzzo was down on his form, but Ifill was probably better (like all of the Nix) than he has been for the vast majority of the year. It was just one of those games where D'Apuzzo didn't own the left back. As for Cole, I wouldn't want him at the back...Montalbano is spot on re his best pozzie in the WSW structure.

On the topic of Ifil.... How fat is that man? Certainly doesn't look like an athlete at all.

He's been good defensively, lacklustre going forward.....but what do you expect with like 140(?) appearances and 0 goals????

D'apuzzo is a good player, brings experience to the side. I agree that his combo with Bridge isn't as good as Hersi+Polenz but he is improving.

I think there is a vital difference between the two combos and that is Bridge is less consistent in his overall play and D'Apuzzo is less mobile or less willing to move up forward. Hersi and Polenz just have that flair and speed to click together more often than not.

 

What also has to be considered are the roles of their respective central defenders...Beauchamp seems happier to sit back and help with overall defensive/team direction allowing Polenz and Hersi to range forward with more fluidity, whilst NTS varies his positioning far more, going forward or dropping back with maximum effort and speed. That then means that D'Apuzzo has to perhaps concentrate more on his defensive positioning than linking up with Bridge as NTS is helping more as a feeder on his side of the field.

From what Popa said in the press conference it seems D'Apuzzo has a foot injury (it was the reason he was subbed at half time). Like Ono, they are waiting on scans today to see the severity of it, here's hoping it's nothing too serious as we're already quite depleted by injuries and suspensions.

looked sharp, solid and used his body well. gave a way a few fouls, but that put his authority on the game and really put (i think it was) Chianese under pressure and marked almost completely out of the game like caira did to hersi last week.

He was infinitely better than first two rounds, and there were a couple of occasions where he got beat but came back and won the contest like an animal. I don't think he's 100% still, and he and Bridge aren't back to their best as a combo from 2012/13, but he must've felt far happier with himself post game.

Seems like Wellington is his bogey team. Ifill carved him up last week and last season. Much better against East Sydney though. Hope he can keep up his form now!
