2017 ACL Hopes Fade With 3-2 Loss

The Western Sydney Wanderers 2017 Asian Champions League campiagn is all but over following a 3-2 loss in Campbelltown tonight.

The clash between the 3rd & 4th placed teams was a goalfest, as both teams needed to win to keep a realistic hope of progression from the group stage.

FC Seoul took the lead in just the 4th minute. After a wide free kick was headed poorly back across the top of the 18 yard box by Shannon Cole, it reached Hwang Ki-Wook who laid off a simple ball into the path of Lee Seok-Hyun, who sent the ball rocketing into the back of the net giving Janjetovic no hope at all.

They doubled their advantage several minutes before the break after Scott Neville was judged to have taken down FC Seoul's Brazilian import Maurinho. The replayed showed the penalty was soft at best, and a clear dive at worst. Dejan Damjanovic took on the responsibility and his perfect penalty nestled into the side netting despite Janjetovic picking the right side.

Damjanovic had his brace in the 71st minute, up against Brendan Hamill the Montenegran international made Hamill look like a schoolboy, turning him inside & out before firing past Janjetovic at the near post.

As time began to run out, the Wanderers put a goal on the board, with Antonis hitting a Jumpei cutback past the keeper for 3-1. Having scored a goal, the Wanderers finally lifted their intensity, but took far too long to get a second on the board.

In the 92nd minute Nico Martinez lifted a cross into the penalty box, finding Lachlan Scott who hit a bullet header into the top corner. Replays indicated he was probably offside, but the goal stood.

With only a minute or two left on the clock, the Wanderers were unable to prevent Seoul keeping the ball down the wrong end of the field, and were unable to put together one last attack.

If the Wanderers are to progress from the group stage with ACL tie-breakers being Head To Head Results before any Goal Difference is applied, they will need to win both their final matches against Urawa and Shanghai, to beat one of those teams by 5 goals and for that team beaten by 5 to lose their other remaining game.

I am very annoyed not because of the display but because of the team selection. For the fans this was a do or die, for the club it didn't matter.

The sad part - if we scored before them they probably **** the bed and we win easily.
The good part - no more midweek games to worry about, so the backups won't see the light of day unless there are injuries.
No more Borda, Hamill. Dimas only on for the last 20. Ditto Scott.

Unfortunately Clisby and Jumpei will still be gracing us with their prescence. I'd pick Cole over Jumpei. His interplay with his teammates sets up chances.

I'm with Tardotz on this. We have meekly gone out of the acl without even properly giving it a go. Not so much tonight but the line up we put out at home against urawra was dreadful.

I'm going the full riva tonight

Scott was outclassed
Jumpei and Nichols more or less ineffective
Cole offered little

We had heaps of ball but didn't little with it

Meh we were never get anything in Japan with this team

At least all the what if's after last game will end again we are back to being rubbish haha

Don't mind the Seoul Zlatan even at 36 he can do
Job here surely
We can afford him

I thought in the first half his movement and little balls to teammates were the only times we looked like creating anything. At least twice his smart work set up decent balls to feet inside the box, only to have the chance stuffed up or passed back out and all the way to back to Aspro!

That maybe might mean "... not if you're as **** as this".

If you're trying to buy someone wouldn't you want to impress them??

He scores two, we play ****. His price tag probably just doubled.

Next season, play every home match at Campbelltown = Scott gets the A League golden boot.

Still hard to understand how when you're 2-0 down chasing the game you put Dimas in and not a striker (Santa)

Did Mack say that Santa was warming up but looked like he was injured while doing so?

Moving Antonis forward improved our attack, but weakened midfield. The problem with this team is that Antonis is our best #6, #8, and #10! Well, that and the lack of quality wide men. And we only have one quality striker, who's old.

Fox Sports were showing the WSW subs warming up and just as they went to cut away it looked like he grabbed his leg. They didn't replay it though but I noticed it along, commentators said something about it but moved on and didn't go back to it.

Dont know if he was injured but I doubt it as he was warming up with the others behind the goals up to the minute the the subs came in
A lot of negativity here I thought we played ok got done by a pen and 2 cracking goals . Still got high hopes for the semis if we add Santa Cornthwaite and Nico to starting 11 .

Seriously, Seoul offered very little apart from the two screamers that Vedran couldn't stop. In general play, they were pedestrian - we were just as flat as two week old urine, so we looked worse. The game plan seems to be run the wings, and if there isn't an opening the size of Sydney heads to shoot through, play the ball back to our own half and try the other wing. Hopeless.

Having said that, will someone please clock that dickhead Bossi - the way he wanked on about how great the Koreans were you'd think they were Real Madrid. http://www.smh.com.a...411-gvj1tu.html

Ordinary effort that both flattered to deceive and was a bit unfair. All that possession but the decision making and shoot färken was almost useless. Jumpei was utter pants, and Cole just didn't have the right stuff. Even Antonia had a flat night, and perhaps only Aspro had a decent run out the back. Scott did SFA. However Seoul had a wunder goal to get themselves off to a good start and that useless färken ref didn't exactly help our cause. Were the oppo a 3 goal better team than us? Hell no. However it was a lethargic, ineffectual effort from a team that should have put it on the line.

Watching the game last night I just assumed we'd decided to not make an acl run and focus on finals.

Tough night at the office that one. Don't understand why best starting 11 wasn't on the park. Then substituting Dimas for Nichols..... Far out Jumpei has no composure in the final third! Knew things were gonna be bad when we had so much possession. Same issue as most of the season - no finishing ability. Anyway, hopefully Santa is ok and we really do sign a decent striker in the off season.
Does anyone know if Neville is ok? He copped a couple of nasty knocks. As for the officiating......geez

Forget the football score, that's not important... what was the crowd?

Scott was isolated. And our players don't understand the concept of a first time cross. They all put their foot on the ball and lose whatever advantage or overlap they had.
Frustrating as hell.

Possession means nothing. Its what you do with it. Seoul had 3 chances and scored all of them. We didn't even try to score until the last 10 minutes. Too little, too late.

People calling for Santa to play seem to constantly forget that he is 35 and played 90min on Saturday. He never backs up after that, especially mid week. The fact that we all seem to rely on him is the real problem. ie recruitment.

#WhereIsGriffiths What a great signing that was ffs.

At least this morning I watched a proper team play and take their chances with a proper game plan.

Seriously? The guy took on 3 players  every time he had the ball but never got support from any of our players. Was shutdown by sheer numbers but was one of our best players on the day. My thing would be on Jumpei and Shannon Cole they did nothing but lose the ball easily kept quiet Fc Seoul. Game changed for us as soon as Popa put Nico on, and Dimas actually steadied the ship when we couldn't get out of our half.

I agree with most comments here this was must win and should of gone for broke and put Santalab or Griffiths (if Santa was indeed carrying an injury) to help out Scott

Griffith when he arrived got some criticism said judge him on his performances......yeah righto......it was games like last night that he was surely brought here for. The thing is until you posted this comment above I had actually forgotten all about him lol I think that says it all.

And so this Seoul Zlatan thinks he could be coming to Wanderers, but he is 35 or 36, a good addition maybe but the kind we should have had a few years back. Would probably still do a good job in the HAL though.

no thanks to a 36 yo nobody

Jumpei is starting to remind me of the legendary Adeleke - 360 degree pirouettes without going anywhere. I was prepared to give him some slack, because after all he does have good close touch and can often beat the first man, but I swear if he was one on one with an open goal he'd cut the ball back. The experiment has failed.

Oh, and how rubbish is Borda?? Players were looking up, seeing it was him in the line, and then looking to pass elsewhere. For such a young club, we really have set a standard for dud signings.
