  • Coffs Clash Lost By Wanderers

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers lost their pre-season match against the Central Coast Mariners 3 goals to 2.

With the Wanderers playing a strong starting 11, they would be frustrated with their first half performance, failing to put a goal on the board, before the lineup was switched to a more youthful look for the second.

And in that second half it was Mariner's starlet Daniel Heffernan who reigned, his 4 minute hat-trick put the Coast up 3-0 by the 56th minute. Romeo Castelen clawed a goal back in the 69th, and Josh MacDonald gave the Wanderers a sniff at levelling the game, but they weren't able to score an equaliser.

Western Sydney play their first competitive match of the season in the FFA Cup Round of 32, against the Brisbane Roar at Penrith Stadium on Tuesday August 11.

Whilst we made some fundamental errors and lacked some cohesion at times there were some good signs in the match. Many of the young guys did well in the second period whilst we looked defensively better with the first squad in the first half. I'm quietly confident things will go well for us this season after chatting to a good friend & new Wanderers player after the game. The vibes are good.

Did Aspro get any game time in the 2nd half?

No point over analyzing a game such as this, the result is secondary to getting time on the pitch and trying different combo's and working towards full match fitness levels.

No injuries so all good for me, good workout.

Aspros came on with Romeo after Mariners scored to go 3-0 up. Very commanding at the back. A very solid 35 minutes.

I hope Fofanah at left back isn't a sign of things to come.

useless, how can you concede 3 goals  in that amount of time from the same player. Disgusting.

These pre season games dont tell us too much. First half 0-0 with a strong line up. Just wondering what happened in that Heffernan hatrick time period. It would have been nice to beat the Mariners but not to worry, FFA cup is our first meaningful game.

Some shocking defensive positioning in that Facebook link. The striker finished well, but he was left wide open for at least two of the goals. Am I right that they are mainly youth team trialists?

I wasn't there so can't comment on the game at all but by going off that footage from behind the net, if that is the extent of effort which Bouzanis is prepared to put into protecting our goalmouth, then by crikey I hope we have a very solid defence in front of him or a very in form Redmayne to pick up the pieces.

I wouldn't worry too much about results, trials are just that. An opportunity to see what works and what doesn't, before a ball is kicked in anger.

Bouzanis showed there in that little clip that his positioning and commitment was what let him down in that small package of play, regardless of how the ball got to that point before Heffernan latched on to it. I hope he was minimising effort to avoid injury but Covic would never do that, not even in a non competitive trial game.

I prefer Redmayne, but it seems we will go with Bouzanis. Central Coast are an unknown quantity this season. They might just surprise a few teams.

For me the goal keeper position is the big unknown this season, but I just need to trust that Popa and Kalac know what they are doing. Once doesn't need to have the (on paper at least) best keepers in the league to end up in the top two, as we have seen last year. But I would be much more comfy with Birighitti in goal. Oh well.

Don't worry what they wrote chubba told you the fact.

Players also hailed Aspros as changing game when came on with Castlin.

    • That's sorta been the story of their season apart from the first few matches. More (as) often than not they looked likely to lose but have won "convincingly" instead.  Phoenix, in their own way, have done the same. The most extreme example is winning 1-0 without a shot on target.  So, rather than getting away with it, their tactics/strategy has worked.  You know as well as I do, Football has many facets including creating chances, taking chances or alternatively nullifying chances or saving them. Which team wins is not just which team looked most likely but which team made the most (or worst) of the chances or denying them. Surviving is not just luck. A goalkeeper saving numerous times is not luck it's the keeper being better than his opponents efforts. As they say,  it's a team game.
    • They were clearly second best in both games but Abdysh couldn't do enough, then ran out of gas in the 2nd leg and made serious mistakes to give up the game. Mariners got away with it for sure.
