  • Potential Group Of Death Awaits Wanderers In ACL 2015.

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers face a potential Group of Death in Group H of the 2015 Asian Champions League, having been drawn alongside Guangzhou Evergrande of China, and potentially with Urawa Red Diamonds of Japan & FC Seoul of Korea.

The draw took place this evening, with the big talking point for Australian followers being the draw of defending ACL Champions the Western Sydney Wanderers against Guangzhou Evergrande, the team the Wanderers defeated in a spiteful home & away tie on their fairytale run to the final. Evergrande qualified as the 2014 Chinese Super League champions and will be keen to avenge their defeat from last season.

The teams who will contest the play-off for Group H will be FC Seoul who are seeded to the East 1 play-off game, with Ha Noi T&T of Vietnam facing up to Persib Bandung of Indonesia for the right to play the K-League 3rd placed side. The Koreans are no strangers to the Wanderers, having been defeated 2-0 on aggregate last year in the Semi-Final of the competition.

The Japanese team in the group is yet to be confirmed. The Emperor's Cup of 2014 will be contested in a few days time, with J-League winners Gamba Osaka taking on 2nd Division Montedio Yamagata. Should an boilover occur the Wanderers will be joined by Urawa Red Diamonds, the club where Shinji Ono began his professional career. If the expected result comes to fruition then 3rd placed J-League side Kashima Antlers will take the spot, a team

managed by legendard Brazilian defensive midfielder Toninho Cerezo.

Brisbane Roar are in Group G, with only Suwom Bluewings of Korea confirmed in their group, their Japanese opponents will be either Montedio Yamagata or Urawa. The final spot will be contested via the Qualifier play-offs, between Beijing Guoan, Guangzhou R & F (both of China), Johor Darul Ta'zim of Malaysia and Bengaluru of India.

The Central Coast Mariners are the final Australian team involved. They will play a do or die qualifying play-off on the 17th of February against either Bankgok Glass of Thailand, Yadanarbon of Burma or the Warriors of Singapore. If victorious the will enter Group F along with Gamba Osaka, Seongnam & Buriram United.

The final group comprises of Jeonbuk Hyundai, Shandong Luneng, Binh Duong & the winner of qualifying play-off #2.

Either way the schedule is even more congested than last season because of the asian cup break, 2014 ACL and 2014 CWC.

And Lippi's ban won't make a difference because he is now retired.

Or we sign him for a one-game, guess-stint marquee capo for the RBB

Pretty much we seem screwed from late Feb onwards with all these catch-up games added too! As someone posted above, our congested fixtures list is gonna look like this

    • 21 Feb - Adelaide (A)
    • 24 or 25 Feb - ACL Japan 3 (A)
    • 28 Feb - Sydney Derby (H)
    • 3 or 4 Mar - ACL Guangzhou Evergrande (H)
    • 8 Mar - Brisbane (A)
    • 11 Mar - City (H)
    • 13 Mar - Victory (H)
    • 17 or 18 Mar - ACL FC Seoul? (A)
    • 21 Mar - Newcastle (H)
    • 25 Mar - Brisbane (A)
    • 28 Mar - Perth (A)
    • 3 Apr - City (H)
    • 11 Apr - CCM (A)
    • 18 Apr - Adelaide (H)
    • 21 or 22 Apr - ACL Japan 3 (H)
    • 25 Apr - Perth (H)
    • 5 or 6 May - ACL Guangzhou (A)

I feel sorry for our boys, I'm exhausted just looking at that fixture list particularly in March. There's gonna be very very short turn-arounds so I hope that they get some much-needed rest in January during the Asian Cup.

    Monster group.

I am surprised that anyone is surprised about the schedule we are facing from February onwards. It was always clear that we will play two games per week for most of the time for at least three months. Effectively Popa will have to build up two teams, one for the weekday matches, and one for the weekends.

Bring on a couple of extra players (one of them an Asian) for the ACL, and maybe a guest and/or marquee player to deal with the work load.

    thanks for summary

its a ridiculous schedule, esp with long travel involved

FFA needs to flex salary cap and WSW owners needs to buy us an international marquee of Shinji Ono standard plus an Aussie marquee

only way we can be truly competitive to defend ACL title

in some ways, not making HAL top six play offs might be a blessing given the above?

I really want to make Japan, been looking forward to it since deciding against it earlier this year. But Japan away match being in Feb is gonna be tough.

As for China, really meh about it as I personally have no desire to visit Guangzhou. Crowded Chinese cities with mega pollution is a turn-off.

Wouldn't have minded trading Japan for Korea either but with the 4th team in our group not confirmed as Korean team (could still be vietnam or thailand), I'm reluctant to book away trip to Korea either.

    Choices choices!  :nono:
