You don't think that damage has been done to the club by coming 7th? We are the laughing stock of the league. Gombau has been a disaster, he offered nothing over the last 5 months. Why anyone would want to reward non performance of a manager is beyond me. Him getting sacked after 10 rounds next season as Bozza suggests would be the worst case scenario. It needs to be avoided.

 

 

I stopped having any faith in Gombau after seeing the team he put on the park in the second Derby.

There's an oft-quoted cliche "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result". I don't think it's been translated to Spanish, because Gombau hasn't seen it.

It's not unreasonable that the club decided to bank the leftover cap space for next season when we have time to scout a proper fit, and use Thwaite and Hamill as starting CB's with Aspro as backup and Clisby as emergency backup. Aspro got injured after the January window closed and Thwaite got sent off. There aren't many clubs in the league set up with the depth to handle that scenario.

Not to want to be like them, but when the other lot lost a centre back in jan they bring in bujis. If you have a foreign spot there are lots of players in jan. finding a Australian is obviously harder.

I’d hope that They hadn’t decided to write season off in Jan,  if so the club is more rooted than I thought

Personally the Jets game was the point were I totally lost it. Talk about doing the same thing over, merrick stuck 3 up front and said close down the centre backs, we kept rolling the ball out and losing it 

However right until Sunday I wanted him to work out

The top scorer of the Western Sydney Wanderers said that throughout the season the team missed its former manager too much.

Just a week before the start of the 2017/18 season the news surprised everyone: Tony Popovic left his job at Western Sydney Wanderers to direct in Turkish soccer. The red and white squad had been visibly beaten by this decision since not only the new players who had arrived at the club had done so at Popa's insistence, but also the institution was entering unknown waters. Since its founding Popovic had been his only DT and now, in less than a week, he would have to choose a replacement.

The name was aimed at the Catalan Josep Gombau, a trainer diametrically opposed in his philosophy of play. Gombau had it difficult from day one, suffering a disastrous initial streak of five consecutive defeats and losing one of the Sydney Derbies by 5-0. The team never found him back to his game idea and what is worse, the tension between the coaching staff and the staff was palpable in the air. In fact, throughout the season have been several times in which it has been reported about possible discussions within the WSW locker room.

After consummating the defeat against Adelaide United that earned him not to have entered the playoffs for the second time in its history, who faced the microphones was the historic scorer of the institution Brendon Santalab. The striker referred to the departure of his old head coach as well as the disapproval of the fans once the match ended before the squadron of South Australia:

"When Popa left the team it was very difficult for everyone in the club and I think that weighed on us throughout the season. We had highs and lows and we never gained consistency, regularity ... I understand the anger of the people. We have a big fan and sending them home in this way is very difficult. We promise to come back stronger next season, but there is a lot of work to be done before. "
At no time in the interview Santalab referred to the current coach Gombau. This is undoubtedly an indication that, at least for a sector of the workforce, Catalan does not count at all. It only remains to know if finally the board of directors of the club will make the decision to give him another chance or show him the starting gate. Until a few weeks ago the board was in full inclination to dismiss the coach who was only kept in office by the insistence of CEO John Tsatsimas and owner Paul Lederer. But now, once the elimination of the Wanderers is completed, the situation could be different.

Well, you have to admit that Nux and Perth suffer from horrendous travel schedules and CCM doesn't have much money. By comparison, WSW spent the most money in the league on players this season including importing La Liga players. So yes, I think it's fair to say people are laughing.

I can only surmise that Gombau did not get the behind-the-scenes support he needed. He's been looking like a deer in the headlight, and there seems to be very little respect from the players and not much camaraderie.

that is a good point but there is one huge factor you are forgetting, we suffered tony popovic signings :P seriously tony popovic has brought some terrible signings to the club i mean roly and jumpei were both part of the squad when he took over, sadly roly is still there but i do agree he has pretty much zero respect from the players

True, his signings were very much hit and miss.

You might be right. For the life of me, I don't know why any coach wants that job. Weekly club football where you can select a squad from anywhere in the world (within salary cap and FFA rules), control fitness with your own staff, train them every week all season, vs the NT where the quality is limited to local players, fitness is subject to their clubs, you spend half your time in a plane to go watch potential players, and then have stuff-all time to make the selected squad operate as a cohesive team for a small number of matches. And get hounded by the press. The NT coach is on a hiding to nothing.
