Tepid Draw Kills Home Final Hopes

Recommended Posts

A lack of penetration against a 10 man Victory outfit saw the Wanderers take an unhappy point and kill their home final hopes.

The game reached no substantial heights, as the Wanderers stayed well on top of Melbourne Victory, who were reduced to trying to break on the counter. The Wanderers best chances came from Victory mistakes as they played out from the back, but Nichols, Jumpei & Santalab lacked composure in the final third.

Victory were reduced to 10 men early in the second half, as Daniel Georgievski was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence after 53 minutes for a stupid leaping tackle on Scott Neville. Although the defender got a piece of the ball, the tackle was lunge and he took a lot more of Neville than he did of the ball.

There were only 3 shots on target in the entire 90 minutes. From both sides combined.

The draw means the Wanderers have no chance of hosting a home final. The final round of the season will see if the Wanderers will travel to Brisbane or Melbourne City.

The final game of the season is in Adelaide next weekend.

I was sitting in line with the penalty box on the WST side...It was loud but hearing them and the RBB singing different chants was very confusing (almost annoying).

I hope they work something out, both sing the same chants or alternate but not different ones at the same time. ANZ is a massive ground I don't see why they both have to be close the each other. I don't know what their differences are and don't really care, we go to watch the Wanderers and support them not to have a #_$#_&- competition between wsw supporters.

Santa had a indifferent game,he seemed tired..(?)

We were slow with our passing and we couldn't finish off our good play.

Can someone please do a Monty Python Black Knight job on Dimas and take off his legs.

You must have been sitting near me. WST were louder than the RBB in my seats, but WST were closer to the roof so opportunity for thesound to bounce around. They appeared to try to do the same chant acoupkeof times, but were usually a half beat off, turning both groups into a muddy mess.

I don't mind two active groups (the more noise the merrier for me) but they need to be further apart like they are at Spotless so they can complement instead of compete.

Credit to both RBB and WST tonight. 16k at ANZ can easily be a soulless affair, but I thought the crowd was buzzing a bit this evening.

A lot of foreplay with no penetration. Why WST moved to the RBB'S shoulder is beyond me. If they want a different kind of Active support then try a different part of the terraces. A trip to Melbourne for a semi will be fun and that's the only positive from tonight.

You said it better than me... Totally agree.

Sitting in bay 111. So I am prob close to you guys as well. Felt the same thing.

It was confusing because of how close they were to the RBB.

Big props to both groups.

Another thing that annoyed me was the WST drummer. It was so bad. Even a monkey can play better.

Very close I was in 110

Jumpei.

****

This, end thread.

He was so poor around the box but so was our crossing and finishing tonight and a draw was fair considering their counter attacks didn't pay off.

We were never going to score tonight, when I saw Nico (our best player) fluff that golden chance in the 1st half I knew it. I was just hoping that MV don't have a counter and score.

Was surprised to find WST took up residency right next to our usual seats near bay 113. We didnt budge because i like those seats and they were not blocking any of my view, all i could hear was them being right near them. A few times they tried to get in sync with the RBB but mostly did their own thing of course.

For as blunt as we were tonight i also thought Victory defended well and in numbers. Always close to their man, always a block or deflection on just about evey shot it seemed, they were organised even after going down to 10. Last week against the Nix rattled them and looked much more in control.

We just didnt have that killer final ball. Lots of slow build up and sideways passing again.

Disapointing not to get a home final but a few months back i would have taken 5th or 6th spot.

As blunt as we were i think that is not the whole story tonight, Victory defended well i thought and we didnt have the answers. But i think many sides would have struggled to break them down tonight. They packed the defense and made it hard.

you make a good point but i still think most other sides would have actually given it a shot, we didnt do anything

Seriously, so bad. La Banda practice regularly, and it shows. They're a tight unit that know what they're doing at all times. The WST stuff just comes across as amateur hour.

Respect for the effort, but the outcome is not good.

Just not good enough last night when it mattered but also great to see us keep it close against a serious contender, subs were weird why bring Dimas on for. Anyway moved on and I'm glad the home final push is sorted. We can now play a strong side against Seoul and send a B side to Adelaide

If anything the ability to finish 6th is better because it means a guaranteed 2nd week final against esfc (should we win on road week 1) and avoids another flight in a busy period for us

Don't really care if it's city or roar

Hey its Happy back again:)

Well my take on the game was that as a team we were fantastic, our defense looked comfortable, our midfield looked superior to Victory.

Brendan Santalab struggled with 2 markers on him for most of the night and certainly Nico Martinez should have put the ball away late in the first half.

In the first tem minutes of the second half it looked we were getting the better of Victory and after the send off Victory shut up shop.

Victory spent 35 minutes with 8 men in the box and we probed from all angles, maybe we could have done better but in the last 15 minutes they camped 9 men in their penalty box and made it near on impossible to get through them.

28 shots on goal 12 blocked says it all.

I would recommend to everybody to watch the replay study the system Muscat put in place after the send off before we criticise the performance

A good performance that could have been better , off to Adelaide next week with a stopover in Campbelltown.

Bye from Happy :)

PS: Jumpie was strong in midfield tonight and he will be a fantastic player for next season again another study of the replay on Jumpie may change your view.

I willl definite keep that in mind as from watching the game at the ground (and all the other ones) I have mistakenly come to the conclusion that he's basically a Japanese sotirio with less ability and end product
