Tony Popovic disrespected the Asian Champions League by naming a 2nd tier squad for his opening match against Urawa, and the Japanese outfit punished him by handing out a 4-0 drubbing with a second half blitz.

Despite having just won the Sydney Derby, Popovic rotated his squad, bringing back failed foreign player Artiz Borda, the inconsistent Jumpei Kusukami, while also introducing players who haven't played in months, like Steven Lustica. Popovic also gave a debut to young striker Abraham Majok. The disjointed team managed to ease into the match, getting to the half-time break without conceding, along with Majok scoring only to be ruled out by the offside flag.

The second half was a disaster, just 10 minutes into the half Lee Tadanari sliced through the inept central defensive pairing, Shinzoh Kohrogi latching onto the through ball and stabbing a toe-poke past Vedran Janjetovic. They doubled their lead almost immediately, Tadanari turning from provider to scorer as he took advantage of an awful giveaway from Janjetovic, as he threw the ball straight to Urawa, they launched an attack that eventually ended with Tadanari firing under the keeper for 2-0.

The introductions of Mario Shabow, Ryan Griffiths & Shannon Cole did nothing to stem the Red tide, as they went for the jugular, picking up a 3rd goal in the 68th minute. Unlike the Wanderers who wasted every single set piece opportunity on the night, Hamill leapt to try and clear an Urawa corner but he only managed a dangerous flick-on. Urawa defender Makino Tomoaki was left unmarked, he waltzed into the 6 yard box, flung out a boot and connected to send the ball crashing past Jumpei on the line.

Brazilian forward Rafael da Silva was introduced late in the game, and despite not having the pedigree of his famouse namesake who played for Manchester United, Lyon & the Brazilian national team, Rafael was still good enough to blast a fourth goal past the Wanderers defence by embarrassing Hamill & Janjetovic.

Despite the high of the Sydney Derby win, this was a pathetic loss, one that started from the moment Popovic decided to play a bit piece team made up of failures, players out of position, debutantes, and men who hadn't seen a competitive match in months.

How Popovic decided that it was fine for his two fullbacks, several midfielders and goalkeeper to back up after the derby, but not the key central defensive pairing of Cornthwaite & Aspro is beyond me. For a coach who has won the competition, he let himself get humiliated, destroying all the momentum from the weekends Derby victory, just in time for a long plane trip to Perth for the weekend, followed by a long-haul effort to face up with Shanghai SIPG next week.

The few bright spots were Majok and his debut, Shabow finally getting some gametime, and the long awaited return of Shannon Cole. Everything else was a dismal failure.

Plenty of negatives to take from the game but being a positive lad there was:

    3) A cute single mum had the seat beside me - wonder if she bought the three match pass....

    That is all

    lol.

    That's a funny post.

Very much the opposite of tonight's game.

What a load of shite that second half was.

******* hell Popa. Please take this championship seriously.

Lustica has to go down as one of our worst ever players.

Yet he was our best in preseason.

He scored a goal in some backwater town like Cessnock or something and you claim he was our best?

    lol.

Jumpei, he got outpaced and was shut down easily.

Dimas played his worse game ever, it was cringe worthy when he had the ball, lost it severely times, too lazy, poor decision making, and our set pieces and corners were disgusting.

And finally lustica, takes stupid yellow, and his poor awareness, laziness, passing led to the first 2 goals. I wouldn't want to see him play for us ever again.

Martinez was average at best today full credit to urawa, they shut him down.

    Borda, Hamill, Clisby... No comment.

Dont have the squad to get out of the group and push for a top 6 place this time. I fear we are going out of the acl with a wimper this time. Just the first game though, but wont get any easier on the road.

Not going to get anywhere with Hamill and Borda in the same side, you can carry maybe one sack of shite, but not two.

    The positive...

    Shannon is back!

If he's not better than Lustica I'll eat my shorts. Farrrk, he's better than Jumpei. And he's a better dead ball taker than bloody Dimas. Though that wouldn't be tough. You could probably pick a random out of the crowd and have a pretty good chance of being better than Dimas at dead balls. ******* floaters every time.

This is not going to be popular but Nico needs a break. He is skillful but he is just as bad as all the others when it comes to finishing. Castelen was skillful and could not finish (apart.from the last few games) Nico is proving to be the same.

Yeah, Nico was pretty quiet tonight, made a few good moves. Santa was pacing around at 2-0 and I think he would have still come on at 2-0, but the 3rd killed that, no point.

Dimas frustrates the **** out of me, drives me mad with his free kicks and I think his body language on the pitch generally sucks this season. Has a touch of the sulks about him and strolls around like it at times, something is off with Dimas, I think he is a better player than he has been this season, missing his Spanish buddies perhaps. I don't think we missed him in the derby game.

We fielded a second string side tonight, and by the second half were exposed by a Japanese side that are experienced playing together as a team.

Very impressed with the away supporters tonight. They made just as much noise as G.E. and Al Hilal supporters did when they bought out an entire end. Just as loud as the RBB tonight, though they couldn't sustain it for the full 90 like the RBB.

The only positive is that we lost our very first ACL home game too.

And that didn't turn out all that bad. :ninja:

Can we swap Hamill for Cameron Crestani who's having a blinder in the Brisbane acl game

    He did, didn't he!!

I hope we just focus on the a league from now on. We don't have the depth or quality to get out of the group stages. We will get absolutely flogged in China next week, no point burning out the players.

Ahh well **** happens we lost against Ulsan all those years ago and how did that turn out

    Not even a close comparison.

Against Ulsan we played some nice stuff. Got punished for some errors for sure but we were competitive. Tonight we weren't even close. We were NPL standard, no more.
