  • Dual Errors Hand Roar Three Points

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers were the architects of their own demise tonight, gifting the Roar two goals in a 2-1 away loss in Brisbane.

Jack Clisby was the first offender, he managed to contort his body in such a fashion that he managed to hit a clearance from a Daniel Bowles cross right back across goal into the path of Jamie Maclaren, and the ball rebounded into the path of Brandon Borello for a simple tap-in to open the score in the 22nd minute.

Western Sydney finally managed to take a shot in anger and miraculously, it was Jumpei Kusukami who actually took a shot and scored. Mitch Nichols attacked the right flank and found the Japanese midfielder with a short pass, and he made no mistake with a bullet across Theo into the bottom corner.

Scott Neville shot his side in the foot with 10 minutes to go, with an utterly stupid attempt at a diving tackle on a player running the ball out of play, getting a second yellow and being given his marching orders.

Brisbane substitute Brett Holman took advantage of acres of space in defence deep into stoppage time, taking a long range effort on that should have been comfortably saved by Janjetovic. Despite a number of good saves in the 90 minutes, it was the last 30 seconds that killed his new club. The shot had some power, but was aimed straight at him, but like he's done numerous times before, he spilled the ball behind him and wasn't able to scramble quickly enough to keep it out.

The loss has the Wanderers stuck in the bottom 4 and with the Asian Champions League looming quickly, it looks like the Wanderers will get even worse as travel & the amount of games per week mount.

In the next 3 games the Wanderers face Wellington, Mariners & Sydney FC. I expect at least 7 points out of these 3 matches, and if not, the position of Tony Popovic and his cadre of hand picked staff should be reconsidered so any new manager will have enough time to assemble a new outfit and get a full pre-season under their belt.

     Stability builds great sides.

This is it, and my biggest criticism of anything that has gone on this year. Changing the entire side every year is destined to end in a steaming pile at some point. Changing personnel is different to reinvigorating tactics, which obviously needs to happen regularly. Without a consistent side, a decline is inevitable. It also isn't good enough to just yell 'Salary cap'. No other A-league side  churns through players like we do. Now we face the rather difficult call on whether to stop the churn, or deal with a side that doesn't cut it. Either solution will be painful imo.

Feel a bit sorry for Vedran, he has been great to this point.

Yes we turn over players and perhaps more than others have but everyone makes out it is the whole squad every year and no-one else comes close to what happens to us. Rubbish!!  SFC's squad is substantially different from last year.  They brought in several knew players for their first team.  The team that finished last year wouldn't come close to being top 6 let alone top of the table.  AU's team is obviously as different as ours with a huge turnover - but obviously not salary cap, is it?  Some of this year's changes were natural turnover (eg Bridge and Topor - time to bail out for the dollars on offer OS and get the superannuation dollars) and the unexpected last minute loss of Jameson who we really do miss. I suspect part of our problem is that we lost some of the players we depended upon and fans loved.  Others we good or coming on after last season but lets face it the end of last season was agonising - we needed about 9 points from 15 to lift the PP again and earn the home GF but staggered across the line because other teams bombed out.  AU only got there because the rest of us crashed.

Jets have several different players and they will be different again next season.  Okon wants a different squad at CCM.  City have had several changes.  We notice ourselves more than others and we have had a couple of seasons of high turnover as we try to establish a new system and build a suitable squad around that.  If we had found the right players for the system this wouldn't be a topic of discussion - no-one cares when we win.

My biggest complaint is that we have few players who have intensity and want the ball every time.  We stand off too much.  We wait for the ball too much.  We don't tackle hard and well.  We aren't usually first to the ball.  Our wing backs have been so ordinary for a bit now and can't cross so the width is has no advantage.  And no-one wants to shoot.  We seem to think that walking the ball into the goal either looks better, achieves more or is worth more.

People talking about the ACL but I honestly don't see why this squad should suddenly start putting it together against the likes of Shanghai when we have been pantz all season against all and sundry. Why is it suddenly going to change?

I think we will be more competitive against Asian teams who are more technical skilled rather than physical presence in which we have, but if we can't get goals happening then we can't match clubs with better quality players they now have compared to when we won it.

Unfortunately we won't have much confidence or form but some of our player may lift their game looking for a contract being on show to Asia.

Just hope the errors stop and we at least put up a fight or social media haters will get worse.

Did anyone see Lincoln city beating Brighton last night, or Wolves knocking over Liverpool (well ok Liverpool are totally shite so maybe that one not so much of a surprise), point is that it is a cup comp and anything can happen, who knows Popa might get a formula out of the shower of shyte that is here that clicks for the ACL, unlikely, but you never know....

For obvious reasons Boro I can't let that slip by....Brighton had 9 changes from the previous weekend league fixture and I'm sure Liverpool were the same. Unfortunately WSW doesn't have that comfort of squad numbers come the ACL. By the way congratulations to both Lincoln and Wolves.

Just arrived back in Coffs after the game. Any side that concedes 2 goals will 9 times out of 10 not win the game. We have looked better in the last month as the mistakes have been fewer than previously. Last night 2 horrible mistakes and we were punished with the second very cruel in terms of timing. Any side that only scores 1 in a game is also unlikely to win most games. We have for sure made progress in terms of the back 5. The trend is going in the right way in terms of goals conceded. However, what we haven't done is really rectify our goals scored per game which is still dismal. That's not news to anyone on here or at the club.

Despite the loss the WSW support was awesome last night. Had a blast and managed to convince my Brisbane based brother in law that his sympathetic feelings towards the roar needs to be replaced by the passion of WSW. He was born in Blacktown and so he is just coming home. Job done.

Squad turnover in itself is not the issue.

The Smurfs held on to most of their good players and added more quality. We let most key players go and signed inferior "replacements".

    It shows.

    Exactly this!

Bit late too thread thought would be a goo fest in here and was having good weekend avoided it to keep it going...

Wasn't as bad as I though, much like Popa in his pressers we speak much the same each week.

We have a positive like Baccus last night and then it levels out with a couple of negatives... same thing happens each week.

We never really looked like winning last night except the 5 to 10 mins after we scored.

Aspro for me continues to do well along with the maturing Baccus it's great to see youth come from through.

As Mack said next 3 games are almost all must win if we get anything less than 5 points I reckon we are toast for season.

Tactically Popa got it wrong Clisby had a nightmare against Borello and Neville got ripped by a 36 year old Broich sooo many times and when Holman came in just detroyed us. There were people who had good games however we never had control of the game, never looked like we were going to win and were holding on for one point. Janjetovic i was waiting for that mistake he has that in him but I will give him this one because he saved us quiet a few times.

Season isn't over yet we can still crack the top 6 but it will be tough. It feels like watching Sunderland

The Den are also embarrassing even with their usual poznan insult not knowing what it actually means. The away fans were amazing as always and I never heard the Den once on tv. Just heard the amazing travelling support as always hope the club steps up

    its all been said.

Best bit of the coverage was about 5 mins before kick off and the bird reaching for her drinks :xnod:

    Oh she was quality.

Post-game we had ****wits being smartarses over the corner and one chick (probably a 7/10) started waving sarcastically and we started "tits out for the boys". Her poor friendzoned male was laughing.

That's one way to describe it - although using the word "coverage" may be a poor choice.  Haven't heard from Jack for a while, perhaps he is still in shock?

A Smurf at work sent me a clip of the last few moments of the Roar's winner. He loves the way Vedran just flops into the net "like a seal". :(

Got to admit taken out of context it does seem a strange reaction.

Almost seemed to me as if he was trying to catch it quickly and then release it quickly to begin an attack. Took his eye off it at the crucial moment.
