Fresh from becoming the Wanderers all time leading goalscorer, Brendon Santalab smashed a brilliant hat-trick to put down Melbourne City 3-1 at the Sydney Showground.

Along with his brace against Wellington last week, Santalab's treble sees him rocket to equal 3rd in the golden boot race behind Besart Berisha & Bruno Fornroli & level with Jamie Maclaren. 3 minutes into the game however and the prognoisis for the Wanderers looked grim after they conceded a goal to Neil Kilkenny. Nick Fitzgerald crabwalked sideways inside the Wanderers penalty area, he played a short pass across the top of the box and Kilkenny lined up a shot on the edge of the penalty area semi-circle. It looked off target but was on course to hit Jonathan Aspro, and the young defender shied away from contact with the ball. His decision to turn his back on the ball was costly as it rebounded from his back into the dead centre of the goal, with Vedran Janjetovic left stranded.

The Wanderers hit back level after 20 minutes, Nico Martinez waltzed past a City defender, then found Santalab, he took a touch that bought him in towards goal, and his second was a stunning strike that beat Thomas Sorensen at the near post.

Scott Neville combined with Santalab to put the Wanderers in front just after an hour. Kearyn Baccus launched a cross field bomb of a pass down to the right wing, Scott Neville chased after it, halted the ball before it crossed the byline, then curled in a left footed cross onto the penalty spot, Santalab was on the mark, with three City defenders converging on his position, he knocked a pinpoint header into the bottom far corner of the net. He celebrated in front of the RBB with a trademark jumping leap.

In the 67th minute Santalab had his hat-trick, and the Wanderers were two in front. Jack Clisby maruadingdown the flank having overlapped Jumpei, he cut inside perhaps to shoot, but his touch was heavy, but a challenge with Brattan saw the ball loop up into the penalty box. Santalab & Sorensen both attacked the ball, Santalab getting there first, his deft touch passed the outstretched hands of the keeper and nestled into the back of the net.

Melbourne City saw a glimmer of hope in the 75th minute, as Baccus tripped Nick Fitzgerald in the box and conceded a penalty. Bruno Fornaroli stepped up but made a mess of the spot kick, it was weak, low and central, and Janjetovic kicked it away with his feet. As much as City huffed & puffed they weren't able to get a clean chance on goal again, and the Wanderers ran out winners 3-1.

Although the result didn't change any position in the top 4, it gives Brisbane a chance to go level on points while Perth could end up a single point behind. The Wanderers themselves are now just 2 points behind Brisbane & 1 behind Perth, with their 3 games remaining they could very well find themselves in position for a home final.

What's really pleasing for me is that 2 local products are bossing the midfield in recent weeks. From involvement in local football and futsal I've followed the careers of both Terry and Kearyn. I'll admit I'd just about written Kearyn off as a top A League player until his 'airport altercation' because since then he's taken his game up a couple of gears.

I hope people stop calling for Santa to be called for the national team. Does he deserve to be there... sure, is he in better form than and of the socceroo strikers...Yes.

Do I want to see him missing any WSW games.....NO.

He's missing WSW games by being carded instead :P

Santa would have the effect of Roger Milla at the World Cup those older that mid 30's probably remember the cult status this go had.

Come on for 15 mins scored a goal.

Seriously Santa could score against any Asian defence, maybe even some Southos and Europeans.

Better than missing a game because he's playing for the socceroo and also risking getting injured.....At least this way he is getting a restðŸ˜

Hope we get a decent turnout next week at Newy bearing in mind our current form. It used to be a massive away trip but slowly, game by game, our numbers travelling up there have dwindled (or that's my impression anyway)

The next lot of qualifiers are well after the season is over. I'd love to see him get a shot off the bench.

Well it's goodbye to Spotless for this season.

I've repeatedly posted how poor Jumpei is but, last night he had a decent game. Still won't/can't shoot, and made some poor decisions, but couldn't fault his effort and his passing was good.

Hammil brought on in midfield was an odd one

Agreed. I think that the criticism in general of him is fair enough because he's our foreign marquee, but if you judge him as a 'normal' player, he's alright. Goals wise he can't be that far behind what Castelen had before the finals last year. He's no Castelen obviously, but when he plays well he's a good outlet on the right, he can put a good pass in and combines well with the others around him.

Anyway, I had my first Spotless HSP last night, and man am I gonna miss it. A season wasted.

I don't want him to miss games either, but hopefully by the next time the Socceroos impact A-league - next season - we have another quality striker.

Also, regardless of our own desire to see him play for the Wanderers, imagine how proud he'd be to play international football. It would make me burst with pride, and I'm just a Wanderers fan! If he had an impact on the Socceroos campaign it'd be amazing for him, and no-one deserves it more.

Also, imagine a Socceroos crowd singing NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA

I found that shop just before we had to vacate Spotless the the Bad Boys League.

One of the few good things about Spotless

Yeah I really want him to make it. Especially as he's only miss league games if my calculations are correct, not a finals game.

Santa is 34yo. He isn't playing for the Socceroos.

McClaren has similar amount of goals and is 10 years younger.

No-one's saying he will, but I think that's mainly because of Ange's philosophy.

Santa has the best goalscoring rate of any striker, and has been at the top in terms of goals per minute for a few seasons now. Plus he brings that intangible passion and belief.

The Socceroos will go into the games in June needing points. His age shouldn't matter. If there's 20 minutes to go in Tokyo and we need a goal off the bench, I'd rather Santa than McClaren. Santa would come on and give the Japanese some curry, put himself about, and cause havoc, as well as be clinical in front of goal.

Most national team coaches will not be selecting a 34 yo striker that has never been in the national side.

To cause havok in the last 20 minutes, thats why we apparently have Cahill.

The fact that Santa is even being considered (by fans) just shows how light we are in striking stocks.
