  • Showground Curse Lifted Against Nix

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers cemented their hold on 6th place & the last final series place with a comfortable 3-1 win over Wellington Phoenix, for a first win at the Sydney Showground.

Wellington looked like they were still in the warmup early in the game, and the Wanderers took advantage for Nico Martinez to open the scoring. Scott Neville & Mitch Nichols kept the ball alive with a back & forth, Neville had to slide in with a challenge, fortunately it rolled across the penalty area to Martinez who shot first time on his right foot sending the ball into the bottom corner.

The visitors had a decent half hour following the goal but they copped a goal from Wanderers legend Brendon Santalab. Nichols broke down the left wing, strode in towards goal before providing Santalab with a simple pass at the edge of the penalty area. Santalab cut the ball back on his left foot then blasted his shot through the hands of Moss for.

After half-time Santalab had his brace, and became the Wanderers outright leading scorer, Jack Clisby's cross to the far post was found by Martinez, he took a touch then lofted the ball back into the 6 yard box, Santalab attacked the ball, slamming a header for the Wanderers 3rd goal.

Gui Finkler gave Wellington a glimmer of hope with a 76th minute free kick, Aspro was lucky not to have given away a penalty with another example of holding at a set piece, Finkler didn't need to be on the penalty spot, beaten Janjetovic with his sublime technique. The two goal deficit proved too much, as Wellington's effort fizzled out without making too much trouble for the Wanderers defence.

Western Sydney face Melbourne City in a key match as they head into the final series, and will need a comprehensive victory to give their supporters real hope that they can go all the way to the Grand Final.

Nico sexual balls and Antonis bossed it out there, could have been 5-1 as we actually did some shoot fooken, Jumpei was frustrating as usual but a good overall performance despite the **** crowd. Finally winning at soulless was great but still hate that place.

Antonis was boss has been for the last 2 games. Hard to see Dimas come back into the team

    dimas n baccus = 2 holding/defense type midfielders

baccus n antonis, gives us a player who can attack more with antonis and his runs n baccus can hit them long xabi alonso passes and also has way more energy to get out of tricky situations. Baccus is also gain a lot of confidence in the past year and backs his ability to push fwd when necessary.

Despite the numbers the atmosphere was great. Rbb were in fine voice. We stayed to cheer the lads at the end. I think they happy to get the no home win monkey off their back as much as we were

What was the official crowd number?

A passenger free RBB tonight and they put in. A big shift. Fair play lads. Lots to like on and off the pitch tonight. Antonis is the f***** business. On another note, walked down to the WST end with the little man while he got an ice cream, and they were all sat there arm in arm gently rolling from side to side then all hell broke loose. Whatever that chant is, I've got a lot of love for it.

Agree with above posts with regard to both active groups.

Well done to a smallish but very effective RBB. Fantastic! I think I love the drumming even more than goals.

Brilliant rendition of "We represent..." Wow!

WST were strong too. I have come away with "From Parra to the Hill..." stuck in my head (sorry...have forgotten the names of both chants, even tho I know the lyrics of both).

    It was around 7.8k.

On the game, good to see us finally playing a more direct game and relying less on crosses. We should of had at least six goals. One thing that did frustrate me was the little niggly fouls we gave away Towards the end near our box. One resulted in a goal, and there was almost a second. Almost got them back in the game when they had no right.

Guys like a Baccus, Aspro, Antonis, Clisby etc need to learn to defend a lot better without the silly fouls. Aspro is also giving me heart attacks with the shirt grabbing.

Agree with above, good atmosphere considering the piss weak numbers.

Jumpei needs to learn to got the thing first time. Other than we played well. Santa is our saviour

Just imagine Castelen being in the positions Jumpei was in. Would have got a hat trick!

I had a great time watching WSW win, Santa scoring goals and enjoying some great chanting. To the many that didn't bother showing up - your loss. Every excuse under the sun will be peddled out, except for the one that is actually true in the majority of cases - they just didn't really want to go watch the team all that much.

We've had charmed existence over the last 5 years and a lot of our "fans" are entitled cocks. At least we can get rid of the pretence that our fans are the best in the league . They are the same as any other team some passionate some not . Hopefully most of the bad ones will not renew so I can get better seats next year .

Let's not get sentimental about Castelen apart from that one game he was rubbish for 2 seasons .Compared to Jumpei even Appiah looks OK .
