  • Showground Curse Lifted Against Nix

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers cemented their hold on 6th place & the last final series place with a comfortable 3-1 win over Wellington Phoenix, for a first win at the Sydney Showground.

Wellington looked like they were still in the warmup early in the game, and the Wanderers took advantage for Nico Martinez to open the scoring. Scott Neville & Mitch Nichols kept the ball alive with a back & forth, Neville had to slide in with a challenge, fortunately it rolled across the penalty area to Martinez who shot first time on his right foot sending the ball into the bottom corner.

The visitors had a decent half hour following the goal but they copped a goal from Wanderers legend Brendon Santalab. Nichols broke down the left wing, strode in towards goal before providing Santalab with a simple pass at the edge of the penalty area. Santalab cut the ball back on his left foot then blasted his shot through the hands of Moss for.

After half-time Santalab had his brace, and became the Wanderers outright leading scorer, Jack Clisby's cross to the far post was found by Martinez, he took a touch then lofted the ball back into the 6 yard box, Santalab attacked the ball, slamming a header for the Wanderers 3rd goal.

Gui Finkler gave Wellington a glimmer of hope with a 76th minute free kick, Aspro was lucky not to have given away a penalty with another example of holding at a set piece, Finkler didn't need to be on the penalty spot, beaten Janjetovic with his sublime technique. The two goal deficit proved too much, as Wellington's effort fizzled out without making too much trouble for the Wanderers defence.

Western Sydney face Melbourne City in a key match as they head into the final series, and will need a comprehensive victory to give their supporters real hope that they can go all the way to the Grand Final.

That would be a pretty epic 3 weeks if we got to GF everyone would forget about the **** 6 months proceeding it haha

    @erebus I don't mind 7pm and 8pm but hate 730 it's a little too early and late for me!

Based on our run in (MV, MC, NJ & ADL) it's quite possible we make finals with 8 wins, 10 draws & 9 losses, 34 points, while only managing to beat 1 team who are above us on the ladder (Sydney FC lol).If we beat NJ & ADL, but lose to MV & MC (quite possible), then 5th or 6th will depend on Perth, who play SFC, ADL, Brisbane & MC.If we win 2 Perth would only need to win 1 (ie, Adelaide or Roar) to finish 5th.I'd say we're a 95% chance to finish 6th, and it's a high chance that the final standings will be based on simple "which team is higher now":Smurfs - 68Victory - 57City - 42 (they have a +8 GD over Roar at the moment)Roar - 42Perth - 35WSW - 34Obviously the biggest potential change is if WSW can win 3 games instead of 2 by beating City or Victory or both, and/or Roar & Perth playing a draw or Perth winning instead of RoarIf we beat City that table would change to make it Roar, City, WSW, Perth, which flips the standings but keeps the matches the same.Roar 42City 39WSW 37Perth 35If Perth beat Roar, it would look like:Roar 39City 39Perth 38WSW 37So in short, expect a Vision home final vs the Wanderers in week 1 of the finals.

Vision in MelbESFC AllianzVictory in MelbIs all that will stand between us and our first GF victory.

Err we haven't made the six yet.. Let's no get ahead of ourselves ;)

But I can't see us going all the way. This team has too many weaknesses which will be exposed.

I don't care who we play in the first away semi (providing we make 6th) as long as it's not City. I would prefer Brisbane or Perth away. City have big game players, who can't be arsed in some games but step up for the big games. Like when they beat the Smurfs in the FAA cup final.

If Roar slump badly and lose 3 or 4 of their games they could finish 6th and the fixtures would be MCY v BRI & PER v WSW. They are losing players to injuries, have ACL fixtures and haven't been in good form.

One things for sure wherever we go our away support will be awesome. Our first away semi.. road trip coming up :)

Hope we get Saturday night not Friday. FFA would be mad to pass up that scheduling opportunity.

I want to treat every finals game as a GF in the assumption it could be our last (if we make the 6), Perth will be the only one I cannot go to... so hope it isn't them....

Yep, we could take many poeple to Melb or Brissy for the first... but not Perth perhaps......

And who knows how the tunnel incident might impact them.

I do know why most here are upset about people not showing up. If people want to pay their money and not show up it's their call...No need for excuses or a reason.

I go and last night I loved every minute and those who didn't show up missed out.

    Do I like SOP....NO.

Do I like getting back home just before midnight....NO.

Will I be there on Friday....YES

In which case, City would be the easiest for the travelling support

Pheonix look out they are losing players for the Jets game then the rest is against teams in the top 5. I think the Jets would be the biggest threat

FFA refusing to reschedule this game despite both teams requesting it.

They get their head coach back as he was in the stands on Saturday night suspended.

The only part I was disappointed with was the RBB's refusal to celebrate the goalscorers name. I know I didn't hear it. Other than that they put in a good effort. If there is a problem with the club, that shouldn't be a part of it. Glad to finally get a win at soulless. That is all.

Im pretty confident we'll make the finals. I'm also pretty confident there's not a team in the final six that would want to be drawn against us.

Unpredictably is not only something that frustrates followers. It causes havoc for opposition as they don't know who'll be turning up on the day.

Even hitting the bar sends a shockwave, as it's just a matter of time before they don't.

Lol we beat the invicibles ....Why wouldn't we beat anyone....(on our day😎).

We also seem to do better away than at home....So it might work in our favour....No pressure

I wanted to go to the game just because it wasn't raining and it was nice to walk around without getting drenched

I spent half the game on my feet walking around the stadium - was great

The pie store behind the RBB is on point.

You should give the kebab shop at Spotless a go!

Yeah I was torn between the two, the pies were closer so they won out. Maybe Friday is kebab day.

I'd love to see Jumpei navigate his way through a door... Is he all there?

Our mate Neville ran over to his missus post game, disappeared temporarily and ran back out limping. Cheeky boy.

That was a record for the longest organisation of a post game celebration in front of the RBB. Players all over the place, some say Santa is still taking photos. I didn't get home until 5:30 this morning...

    Happy days. YTB

..and just to play devil's advocate.

Are we getting a tad over excited? I mean we've just beaten the Nux at home for chrissakes...? Just putting it out there guys !

We probably are...at the end of the day we are almost certainly gonna have to win 3 away games in a row to win the GF! We haven't even won 3 games in a row period.

But there's no doubt that when you look at our first choice team, it's capable of beating anyone. I'd say we're the most likely 6th placed team ever.

i think they're the only team who didn't beat us this season - what's not to get excited about?!?!?

A point up at the Jets in a few weeks would be sufficient for us, they will have to beat us and all the pressure will be on them, 6 points ahead and our goal diff is better than theirs also I think which at this stage of the season can be like an extra point.

Should be a good game up at Newcastle on 1st April, I think the Jets will come at us and will be a very open game, which would suit the Jets more.

Call me harsh but I don't completely buy into this 'schoolnight' excuse. Far more educational than some of the crap on TV at similar times and kids do need to get out !! I see that at whatever time we play there are excuses....schoolnight....too late....too hot...Friday traffic.....even Saturday nights finish late and there's all those hooligans around !! It's not just us as all A League clubs are suffering similarly. Admittedly Spotless is the pits but fortunately there's plenty of noise from the stalwarts who turn up. It does piss me off however that games always start 10-15 minutes later than the advertised time.

Depends on the kid and the family. I'll happily give you my 14-month old when he's had minimal sleep and out of routine ;)

Now the weather has cooled off, the later kick offs aren't needed. They're just to please Foxtel so they can get more live content across all of their channels. The NRL and AFL, even though they have their own channels, have priority. Then we'll have the Supercars and F1 (which bring in higher viewing numbers than the A-League) into the mix.

Can see why families are put off though. For many getting to SOP is another 30+ minutes of travel (depending on circumstances). Game finishes around 9PM, home could be anywhere from 10PM-Midnight. Kids need routine as much as sleep. Now, if you say "we're going to only a few home games that have a late kick off", you're going to select the marquee fixtures (i.e. derbies). Also, they're usually on a Saturday, kids can catch up on sleep on Sundays.

I thought that Neville was thrown into an advertising board at the RBB end by a Nix defender. Nix defender should have been carded.

Do you discuss refereeing decisions with your 14 month old at half time? :P
