  • Suncorp Surface Overshadows Draw

    mack

Dimas Delgado's free kick rubbed out a Corey Brown opener to see the Brisbane Roar & Western Sydney Wanderers share a point each on a dreadful playing surface in Brisbane tonight.

The first half was marred by the utterly dreadful pitch offered up by Suncorp stadium. Following yet another idiotically booked concert, the pitch was split between areas of new turf that hadn't had time to stitch together, and pockmarked dead grass holed beyond what would be considered acceptable in semi-pro football let alone a top flight competition.

Brisbane Roar took the lead shortly after the second half resumption through fullback Corey Brown. Thomas Broich was allowed to step back onto his left foot and he delivered a cross into the path of the onrushing Brown, who had been let run at goal by a ball watching Jumpei Kusukami smashed the ball home with his left foot to open the scoring. Jerrad Tyson, who had an otherwise sterling game, would be somewhat disappointed at having let the goal come at his near post, albeit one that was so powerful that it might not have been stoppable at all.

Tony Popovic rung the changes on the hour mark, pushing Brendon Santalab, Kearyn Baccus & Nico Martinez on in search of an equaliser. It finally came in the 68th minute, as Dimas defied his previous form on the dead ball. Santalab had been cut down on the edge of the area, Dimas the Captain stepped up for the free kick, hitting it over the wall and baffling Michael Theo in the Roar goal with the shot across the face of goal.

Neither team could find a winner, and the point for the visitors was marred by a late straight red card to Santalab, after getting in a tangle with known diver Jade North, and the assistant referee decided it was worth a red card for Santalab.

With Lachlan Scott ineffective as the starting striker, and Kerem Bulut having apparently already left the country, it will leave Tony Popovic with an interesting choice up front for the Wanderers next match.

So, apart from Clisby, all players who joined on two year contracts (Bruno, Melling, Jumpei, Bulut, Cornflakes, Borda, Lustica) had a good game? That's pretty impressive.

JT said at the members forum in June that not just four but all five imports need to work out. Hmmm.

Oh well, at least we one a point. That's something.

Bulut didnt give the ball away once the entire match

Santa has to be careful now. It seems he can't move his arms without getting a yellow. First yellow was so soft. He was totally looking at the ball only. You could see the way the ref went to him that he was looking to ping him for anything. Then red card, Jade North obstructed him. Santalab just tried to get around him to go for the ball and there was a tangle of arms. Yet somehow this is all Santalab's doing.

But on both occasions he was just going for the ball. Meanwhile Matt Simon shoulders a guy in the head when he isn't looking and the play has completely stopped. Nothing to do with going for the ball. Just some AFL type melee of the ball. One match suspension only.

Does this mean Bulut is back

Haha.  No worries.  Eduardo will step in.  ..................  Cept FFA.

That was the worst we had played all season, very much followed our previous match against the Nix where apart from 20-30mins we looked horrible. Yes the Suncorp surface played a significant part in that performance but it is a significant concern to me.

The positive for me, that defensively we looked very solid. For most of this season we have been throwing bodies forward and looked exposed at the back, this game we looked to play long ball to Jumpei or Scott (not a clever tactic), not over commit & take less risks at the back. This yielded positive results:

    A few other comments:

    - Referees clearly now looking out for Santa, silly boy to give the referees an excuse to give him a red

    - Excited to see Scott start on NYD & to see Majok come off the bench

    - People wonder why Sotirio starts over Jumpei or Nico, look at how we conceded our goal & you will have our answer

    - Now that Redmayne is out the door, the new fall guy is Sotirio. Yes we all know that he is lacking in the talent department but instead of whinging how about we back him? He was the only player that people hung **** on but I thought he was more effective than people give him credit for. We have him for another 18 months don't we? He isn't going anywhere anytime soon so just

    - Tyson looked to dominate in the air which is a step above Redmaybe but he still looked shaky. I expect him to step aside as soon as Vedran is ready

    - Aspro was my man of the match, showed such calmness & poise for someone of his age

    - Got to laugh at the Dimas goal, looked below standard on set piece duty all season & then pulls off a goal like that?

    - The performance was a concern for me, after being walloped by Victory, I am concerned for what happens on NYD

Borda did ok, Jumpei is was crap every second touch was a tackle

You watching the same game? He was dog ****. He was lucky aspro neville and clisby covered his arse.
I don't think any one of them was worse than the other. I thought Tyson had a good game. Clisby needs to watch the wide men a bit more. Brisbane started getting us on the wings.
Yes, everyone loves Clisby's hard tackling & his getting forward but I think he gets found out defensively at times especially in the air. Much in the same mould as Jamo, just hope that teams don't start exploiting our left side much like they did in the second half of last season against Jamo.

Why was Martinez not starting? Was there a reason or was it just the old any player who shows promise needs to be put in their place Popa tactics?

Popa said he struggled during the week, can't remember the exact term he used but everyone needs to calm the **** down. Popa would only rest his best player for a reason, not because he thought Sotirio was a better player

Jumpei or Castelan.... Castelan had a good turn both as ineffective as the other. If we are going to wish we still hd players... Bridge, who may be available.

Jumpei is the Japanese version of Castelen. Castelen played for holland & Jumpei has been a squaddie for a bottom of the table J1 side. Let's just remember that. The issue with Jumpei is that he doesn't have a big tank, he can't run up & down all game. He is good in attack, can definitely beat the first man but he can't deliver a final ball. That was pretty much Castelen's problem. Give me Sotirio starting & bring on Jumpei at 60 mins. Will be the same result but at least Jumpei can wreak havoc in the last 30mins

The send off is a disgrace I'm not one to bag the refs there is enough people to cover this but yeah north body checked him

Referees are clearly now watching him. Referees do pre-match briefing & essentially scout both teams. Santa has obviously been highlighted as a player that pushes the boundary in terms of cards. Anyone else it would have been a yellow, but putting a hand on someone's face is considered a straight red? Speed the ******* muppet said he tried to slap him? Incompetent fool :nono: Stick to AFL you muppet

Was not impressed with Scott tonight. Very lazy in defense and he let Nichols do all the pressing. If that was his brief from Popa, so be it, but it didn't look good as far as this mug punter was concerned

Don't know if you have ever been in Brisbane at this time of year but it is incredibly difficult to play in high humidity & usually pretty hot too. The guy was working his socks off as much as possible & you can see the difference compared to someone like Nichols who made Scott look like he was standing still

The fact scott is actually in the side is down to Bulut. Had Bulut & Santa combo worked out you might see Scott get the odd run off the bench in the last 10 or a start against CCM or Newcastle. With Bulut not working, Scott has become a mainstay & too much pressure on such a young kid to carry the attack.

I'm not typically a player basher but Sotirio struggles in nearly every scenario. He is undoubtedly athletic but show little football brain. The Brisbabe goal was following a cheap turnover and then at the back instead of staying with Broich he dropped into back line although Aspro had it covered. Broich open, Aspro had to close him down as Sotirio comitted, too late. Can't give that bloke time.

    Link to comment

Yes, Sotirio didn't stay on Broich because it wasn't his job to cover him. His job is to watch the run of the overlapping full back to make sure we don't get exploited out wide. What if Sotirio came inside to take Broich & the ball went to the overlapping fullback. Everyone would then be complaining that Sotirio didn't maintain his defensive duties & then lambast him. He just can't win.

The responsibility falls on the CB's or DM whose job it is to marshall the defence (in the past would have fallen on NTS) or the player who was supposed to cover the midfielder. There is always someone who takes control of the team defensively & directs things, maybe we just don't have that. Plus, Broich by starting out wide, then coming inside should have been covered by the DM (Broich is one of the best football brains in our game right now, even at his age he is just on another level). You can go back & look at every single mistake that was made in the lead up to the goal whether it be the player who lost the ball, the player that committed instead of jockeying or the player that wasn't tracking his man. For me, Sotirio was not at fault.

Tyson put in a Redmayne performance tonight. In the first half he came out to collect a corner and completely missed it, then in the second half he dropped a ball straight to the feet of a roar player. In between all that he made some excellent saves.

That's pretty much a perfect description of how Redmayne plays, impressive shot stopping with a disaster thrown in.

Draw was fair and probably a good thing the pitch was **** as we could of been beaten convincingly, Santa straight red was harsh was a yellow for slapping the face but was a result of North body check and I hope it wasn't a deliberate slap but knowing Santa he has these moments in his game.

Sotirio was decent last night while Jumpei second touch was terrible and he is playing much worse than Sotirio.

I had the same thought with Dimas taking the kick to score but it worked with the keeper fooled thinking the left foot wizard was shooting, still not impressed with Dimas corners as we either short pass for no result or whip it in and not beat the first man or to close for keeper to claim.

Just had to check this topic headline to make sure we did actually get a draw. Yeah it wasn't pretty and we have our fair share of under performers, but Brisbane are in 2nd place, unbeaten in 10 and have an unbeaten record at Suncorp stretching back a long time. Looking at a lot of the comments on social media tonight anyone would think that we lost 5-0 to the 'kin Mariners !!

People think we have the squad we had last year & should be winning every week. Some players haven't worked & the team hasn't click, throw in the dodgy surface it was a good point. Expectations are high but don't reflect where the team is right now

If it was Redmayne can you imagine social media? Tyson was very lucky that none of the mistakes led to goals which seemed to happen to everyone of Redmayne's mistakes.

What a dreadful game that was. We were terrible until Nico came on. Brisbane for a home side showed nothing

At least we got a point. Keeps us on hunt for top 6.

Even then we were horrible. Two teams that like playing the ball on the ground were forced to resort to long & hoof ball tactics. Serious questions need to be asked of Suncorp management. Roar pay significant rental fees & isn't good enough. People were talking about an expansion Brisbane team playing out of Suncorp

I'd like to think the players now know how it is like to play AA football on Saturday & Sunday afternoons when you can't trap the ball because of the random bobbles. There is a reason we resort to hoof ball

    We need more Bulut

I'm pretty sure the deal to Thailand is already done

One bright spark is the continuing maturity of Aspro. He's our best centre back now already. Bit of a battlefield promotion with the unexpected departure of ToePoke-Stanley and the disappointment of Cornflakes and Borda (ing on the ridiculous).

Young players can sometimes lose their way after promising in their teens and never go on with it, it appears this may not be the case with Aspro.

Did he confuse his defenders though?

on bulut vs scott both are terrible but at least bulut put in the effort

Disagree Goat. They both put in the effort. Both might not be good enough, but with Scott there is time for him to make something of himself. Bulut is mid 20's and doesn't look like he can go that extra step. Edited by WestSyd

Spot on beat.. Have seen many a promising youngster play a few games and not be able to step up.

Hard to tell from the tv, but seems like Aspro is constantly barking instructions. Looks like he is running the back four now, which is a little strange given his age.

Whether he can keep it up and take the pressure of being our main cb for another 20 games with the acl, time will tell.

I've been negative on Soririo but he played a role last night. Good to see.

Scott starts again next match v perth. Would love to see him score.

Bacchus on bench last night and possibly another youngster in next week to replace santa

I like where this is heading

maybe i missed it i just didnt see much effort from him but again i know i am not great at analysing football so i can easily be wrong, i think its because Scott didnt really do all that much when i have seen him play but i dont know, you make a great point about their ages too, bulut isnt 19 anymore

Santa's first yellow was marginal, can someone confirm that the contact was actually with his hand not his elbow? Has his eye on the ball, how can you say that was reckless unless the elbow has made with his face which to me is inconclusive.

Santa's straight red, if you watch the replay the AR says that he has swung his elbow to make contact. That is not true. I wonder whether the club will contest. After what happened with Jai Ingam's triple stomp on Aspro a brush to the face can't be considered a straight red for VC.

Wasn't at the game but for some reason most of our players seemed very tired....Was it the ground? humidity or just too much training?

The inconsistency is infuriating. Stomp on Aspro, nothing. Cahill shove, nothing. Unfortunately for Santa, he's a marked man with the refs now. He literally cannot make contact without drawing attention. He has to take some blame for this with his two, maybe three reckless challenges so far this season. BUT, thats not good enough to start handing out yellow and reds everytime he looks at a player the wrong way (okay, a bit of hyperbole there :cheeky: but you all know what I'm getting at)

Its perhaps a symptom of our poor performance so far, but I feel like we never get the same benefit of the doubt that other teams get. Certainly not the same as say ESFC or Vi$ion FC

I'm going to be negative, heads up... but anyone else think Theo was keeping like a Sunday league GK for the free kick. Don't get me wrong, Dimas hit it well, but that should never go in. Theo was on the same side as his wall, why put a wall up at all?

And Sotirio.... I'll stop commenting on him but since Hersi, Bridge and Nico, we only have 1 of them. The top teams benches look far better than our 11 wingers.

There is a fair case to be made that refs are out to get us more than anyone else. Especially KGJ, it was a soft send off but even if it was a yellow he was gone anyway.

Sadly Santa has to be smarter cause any excuse the refs get they will pull out the cards for us. And inconsistency would indicate that it is incompetence across the board, all of these dodgy decisions never go against ESFC or Vision City unless they are playing each other, then the decisions go to Vi$ion City. The fix is in and it's not even being hidden all that well anymore. It's a case of deal with it b*tches from the FFA.
