  • Tale Of Two Penalties In Auckland

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers threw away a win against Wellington after Dimas Delgado missed a penalty that should have won the game for the Wanderers.

Tony Popovic elected to make several changes from last week, in particular putting Jerrad Tyson back in goal after his red card suspension, and introducing Jaushua Sotirio & Kearyn Baccus into the starting lineup.

The opening 15 minutes did not match the rest of the season, as the Wanderers were dominated and barely had a touch on the ball. However, the visitors took an unexpected lead through Brendon Santalab. From a corner, Santalab got horizontal to smash a volley into the bottom right corner of the Wellington goal.

The 55th minute saw the Wanderers double their advantage in the blink of an eye. Mitch Nichols scoring his first goal in the A-League, finishing off a well worked move down the left flank.

Unfortunately the match fell apart for Western Sydney from this moment on. Less than 10 minutes later they had conceded a penalty. Sotirio stuck in a boot on Roy Krishna, and he was adjudged to have fouled the winger in the box. Gui Finkler stepped up from the spot & stroked it home to make the score 2-1.

After conceding a penalty, Sotirio then won another in the Wellington box. Captain Dimas strode to the spot, but his penalty was atrocious, a weak effort aimed straight at where any keeper on the planet would be diving if they picked the wrong way. Glen Moss snaffled the ball while Dimas looked forlornly as he trundled back in position.

Wellington made the Wanderers pay immediately, with Parkhouse delivering on his left foot a cross that saw Krishna beat the 5 defenders in the vicinity, climbing over Jack Clisby and burying a header at the far post.

Both teams had their chances to take all three points, but neither could summon that one last key chance. Both teams remain outside the top 6, and for Tony Popovic the pressure must surely be mounting, with just 2 wins from 11 games.

I will go so far as to say that failure to win against the Brisbane Roar next week should put Popovic's job in jeopardy. This string of "close but not good enough" results cannot be allowed to continue without any change. If Popovic is unwilling to make the changes to the squad or tactics, then it is ownership of the team, who have presided over several years of cheap recruitment who must front up to the fans and explain why they refuse to invest in the squad despite making millions off the move to the Olympic precinct.

I am not worried about the penalty miss from Dimas. Yeah it was a shocking penalty but you can't score them all. Plus not long after that we could have scored a similar easy chance when Moss was caught stranded out of his goals. If you looked there was no goalie when Mitch decided to shoot. He also had the option to pass to a player on his left (Santalab I think) who was wide open with no player in front of him to block the shot and no goalkeeper. Plenty of what if's in this game. I just want us to play a bit more directly and perhaps ease up a little on the pressing and the endless running which is just running our players into the ground, especially at the back end of games. Football is a game for thinkers, not runners.

its always what if for us

every loss we have about 5 billion what if's

2 times we were 2-0 up and we could simply not lose points and somehow we managed it, this is not the afl we dont simply get points for getting within 20 meters of the target and we somehow thought we could rely on Scott to get us goals? what has he done? yes he scored a couple of easy goals in one friendly(pretty much) then we got Bulut for me the most disappointing member of the team, and then we have Santa who is amazing but he cant do it all on his own.

then we got Popa who i have been a huge fan of saying the same **** over and over, never actually changing anything Bulut himself will tell you what insanity is

and maybe Bulut is right and Popa is insane because we never see him take responsibility or act like he has any connection with reality, it feels like we are watching the same movie over and over

    Link to comment

That is poor recruitment and team planning. All self inflicted.

Right. Bringing Bulut back was poor recruitment? Redmayne yes, Bulut no.

How could anyone predict that this would have happened to Bulut? Popa has a special relationship with Bulut & had a fantastic spell with us last time. Is it poor recruitment that things haven't worked out with him?

Team planning too? He had his mid 20's main striker, 34 year old sub & a young kid to fill the gaps. What if he signed a fourth striker, would we all then be complaining that he wasted a spot that could have been used on a box to box midfielder we desperately need?

What is going to happen when the 34 year old striker decides to call it quits one day or goes on a dry spell of not scoring any goals.

Look at berisha..... people can say what they want about him but time and time again he pops up and scores important goals and is the type of signing we need to make. We needed to bring in a player of that calibre to the team from a long time ago.

Peter Green tends to **** us over but enough about him, he's not the reason why we lost.

If that dumbass dimas put that penalty away, we would be 3-1. That was a faarken **** penalty take and the Nux scored shortly after to equalise.

2-2 draws are now counted as losses?

They are when your 2-0 up n in control......for the 3rd time this season , 6 points pissed away

    Feels like a loss....

You look at the starters, look at the bench and is obvious we do not have the quality to compete, we are a 9th to 6th placed side at best. I still think we could make the 6 but we are light years behind the top 3 or 4 that i can't see any end of season miracle. Hell we have tried and failed few times now to become only the second side to win an away GF (not counting CCM against us as it was basically a neutral venue) never mind winning the ****er from 5th or 6th.

Question marks about recruitment and i am tired of being slow starters, wouldnt it be great that one season we can start with a team that is coherent, knows the style they are to play and dont have any players tha will need 5 or 6 round before they are right...

Bozza suggesed yesterday that we should revert to a season 1 style, but we dont have the players to do that. We dont have the full backs, center back pairing or a solid midfield battler to be able to do that.

I dont personally like Dimas as a captain, nothing to do with the penna miss. I just think he is not a leader, and dont think he is as good as some here think he is.

Dimas isn't a dominant personality and he was better with Andreu next to him so he could just be the wrecking ball in midfield

    The dynamics aren't the same.

I still think Mitch might be good alongside him. But popa won't do it.

Also agree we can't season 1 when santa is the only consistent goal scorer. Was good to see Mitch get off the mark though.

For me the turning point in the game was the penalty we gave away. Wellington started ok, we got 2-0 up they weren't in the game.

Prior to game I asked people to post the Type of Defensive Stuff Up, Culprit and Minute before the game, as there has been one every game

    Nobody got

Stuffing Round with the ball in your own box when having plenty of opportunity to clear it - leading to a penalty

    Sotirio

    60th min

2-1 they are now back in a game they had no right to be in, the whole momentum shifted back to them, which of course continued when Dimas missed the Pen (turning point 2)

We can't expect to win games, when each week we give a stupid goal away.

    Link to comment

Spot on - they were listless till then

Sotirio gives away an inexcusable penalty by sticking his foot in there when the guy was going away from goal and there was no threat

Everyone has said enough about him on here and no need to carry on. He's not at fault for where we've been prior to today, but he was responsible for turning the match yesterday.

Neville ? He has enough problems concentrating on doing his job properly . He doesn't have the capacity to do his job and lead the team

This is part of our teams problem . It doesn't have a natural leader , and no one is stepping up to fill the void

    Tyson

    Shannon

    Santa

The rest can go **** themselves

    ;)

Add Clisby, Aspro and Nichols to keep list.

Agreed, but that would have changed the tone of my post too much  I'd actually add Neville as well. Basically, the ones that "get it". Bulut does too but he's gone, no point.

Most unpopular post of the day time lol

Not convinced Aspro is ready to be a first team starter....but is being let down by those around him also.

First off, definitely 2 points thrown away. We should've sealed all three either with Dimas actually doing more with his pen shot than just feathering it to Moss, or with some of the other chances we had.

Secondly, Green wasn't the cause of our failure to win, but he still had an influence that was more in favour of the Nux than us.

Thirdly, listening to the call on Hawkesbury Radio with the Wanderers Live crew was far superior than hearing those dicks from NZ Sky.

    Some other points:

Psychologically we have some problems that just can't be logically broken down and fixed. There is no doubt that the boys beat themselves up when things go pear shape, and/or conversely fail to put the foot down when it's planted on the oppo's neck. Why this is happening...fooked if I know. How to fix it? Maybe clean out some of the staff both on and off pitch. It must kill those that are performing (e.g. Nico, Mitch, Clisby) to see someone like Redmayne, Sotirio, Pinatares etc stuff things up. Also what are Kalac and Foxe doing to actually make our team improve?

Popa Out? Nah...not yet. Has he got recruitment right this season? I'd say it's 50/50...Clisby, Nico, Jumpei and probably Tyson have been good to great. Borda, Pinatares, Bulut, Cornflakes...no. Tactically he hasn't been flexible enough but what can he do with the guys on the field when they do some of the stupid things we've seen out of individual idiocy? And the influence of Lederer & crew on the purse strings need to be looked at. The January transfer window is going to be crucial...we need a new goalie, a new CAM/CDM and a new striker.

Is our season over? Nah, but it's looking as crook as Rookwood. It's not as bad as season 3 but let's be blunt...we won't be challenging for a top 3 pozzie, and may only scrape into the top 6.

Was that our worst Wellington game? Nope...remember last year's demolition at home? Or that 0-0 draw back in season 2? The Nux are a handy squad, and if anyone asked me if say Bonevacia or Finkler would be welcome at WSW I'd say 'fook yes'.

I can't be the bearer of gloom and doom, but I understand the frustration and anger some are expressing. Let's see where we stand in about 4 weeks...and even then there is the ACL to look forward to.

Boro that's the thing I guess we don't have anyone who probably is a clear captain and the lack of onfield leadership is another thing

One from left field I'd go for Nevielle

By product of turning the whole squad over every year. No experienced, long term players who lead and maintain culture of the team.

    You reap what you sow.

We have vedran coming next week and Redmayne leaving. Not sure how good vedran will turn out, but will be same or better than Redmayne, so we're no worse off

Our back 4 is now stabilising. They have had a few games together now and the weakest link, borda looks like he's finally adjusting to the aleague. Aspro is now settled and mistake free, that he's the mainstay cb and that a club like ours has a 20yo marshalling the back 4, says a lot about the recruitment of the 2 other cb's.

Clisby is great going forward, but defensively needs to improve . That's 2 weeks in a row he's been responsible for allowing goals (last week not closing down Ingham and this week being out jumped by short arse Krishna).

If Neville ever learns to cross a ball, he'll become a very good aleague player , for now, he's doing a solid job

Dimas gets lots of touches and is good, but relying on him too much on attack which is not his forte ... And get him the f*ck off corners and set pieces and give them to nico

Jesus, are the coaching staff blind as they watch these meaningless floaters lobbed into the area (where we have no aerial presence)

Bruno or Bacchus are interchangeable . They both have there good days and bad days. Yesterday Bacchus turned over way too much ball.

Sotirio - for everyone's sanity , I hope that's it for now. We are all psychologically damaged enough

Nico - can we please stop playing long aimless balls for him to chase like a greyhound. He's a rare rare player , and we are very fortunate to have him. We'll see even more from here on

    Mitch - legend

Jumpei needs do step up (not sure he can offer more than he is currently)

Santa, great contributor, but our club cant rely on him for 70-80 minutes for another 22 matches this year... Use him for what he is best at right now. Coming on in the 65th-70th v a tiring defense

And the kid Scott is good, and will be good, but he's on an apprenticeship and can't be expected to contribute every week either.

    BRING IN A QUALITY STRIKER

We will beat brisbane and perth next 2 games and will start 2017 on 18 points and in 4th spot

If we get January right, the season will end a lot better points wise than it started. If we don't, expect an exit at the group stage in acl and a 5th or 6th place finish

Shared captaincy....Butters n Santa . Both have the same amount of chunt in them, play hard n most of the times fair.....:ninja:

Let Santa take the pens or at least one other that smacks the fuuck out of the ball. This softly placing it shiit is ok if you're a Pirlo ,Messi etc but no offence Dimas, you're not . Fuuck knows whats going to happen if we're in a penalty shootout....

great idea. make santa captain - will be worth it for the social media outrage from other club's fans.

No one giving credit to Sotirio for the secondary assist for our 2nd goal? He laid it off for Clisby to put it across goals for Nichols. Its the second time he's done this btw. He did the same thing against City for that own goal (I think)

If people actually pay attention to what Bruno does, when he came on, all his passes found a player and were forward, not sideways or backwards.

A lot of attacks start with him.

But he is like the Poljak of season 1. No one notices what he does.

Sotirio's "secondary assists"... are you sure you don't want to declare a genetic interest/connection?  A five year old could/would have made those passes.
