  • Wanderers' Windy Wellington Woes

    mack

Ante Covic suffered a disastrous slip to allow Jeremy Brockie to score the only goal of the Wanderers 1-0 loss to Wellington.

A long range cross lofted into the box by Jeremy Brockie left Covic wrong-footed & stumbling, the Wanderers keeper was unable to adjust his body, he tripped and could only watch helplessly as the ball drifted past him. The Wanderers will be unhappy with the officiating again, as two seemingly stone-wall penalties were denied.

Dino Kresinger started for the Wanderers and yet again failed to do anything remotely considered 'striking'. His garbage, slow play completely wrecked any chance that the Wanderers could build their attack down the middle, forcing the wingers and full back to resort yet again to lumping diagonal crosses into the box from deep. Dino Kresinger must go back to the youth team. The Wanderers play dies when he is on the field. It's that simple. I don't have any confidence in the team's ability to win matches when he is on the pitch.

The first major incident in the match came on 14 minutes. Jerome Polenz broke down the flank, dribbled into the area then attempted to cross into the ball into the centre. Wellington's captain Andrew Durante clearly moved his arm and blocked the ball, as clear cut a penalty as ever has been. The blatant handball was not seen by the blind officials and play continued.

8 minutes later Wellington opened and completed the scoring for the evening. Jeremy Brockie launched an aimless cross from the sideline, closer to the half-way line than the Wanderers penalty box. The ball caught in the wind, but the deviation was something that the experienced Covic should have been able to deal with. Instead he was wrong-footed, and his last ditch attempt to re-adjust his position lead to him slipping on the turf. The ball bounced only inches in front of his outstretched hands and the Wanderers were down 1-0.

    dapuzzor9wp.jpg
Very little else happened in the way of goal-mouth action in the first half, the Wanderers didn't register a single shot on target for the entire first half, while Wellington managed to win a corner from a well taken free kick that was tipped over the bar and had a toe poke from Brockie go well wide.

The second half started with the first shot of the match for Western Sydney, Ono attempting an audacious long-range volley that fell harmlessly into the hands of the Wellington keeper.

The second of the questionable decisions was made by the referee after Dino Kresinger was subbed off after another useless performance, Joey Gibbs immediately looked to have won a penalty when he was dragged down in the box but yet again the incompetent, blind officials that have plagued the Wanderer since their debut failed to spot the infringement.

Wellington weren't able to put the game to bed with a second, it left the Wanderers the chance to snatch a point. The moment looked to have come when Tahj Minniecon used his pace to get behind the Phoenix defence to cross the ball to the back post. Joey Gibbs had the ball on a silver platter but he blasted the shot straight into a defender from point-blank range.

A miserable defeat that dumps the Wanderers out of their hard-fought top 6 position all the way to the depths of 8th, only 2 points ahead of Melbourne Heart and 4 ahead of Sydney FC.

Analysis: See above for my thoughts on Dino. There is supporting a player through a tough period and making sure to still support him when he is selected, then there is supporting a striker who doesn't do anything remotely positive, and has completely failed at his role for over 2 months and wanting him to stop getting picked in favour of another player. 1/3rd of the season is over, the Wanderers are dropping points they could be picking up if they weren't spending their matches pumping aimless long diagonal crosses into the box for a striker who showed us in the previous match that even if he could get a free header on one, that he'd just put it wide anyway. His statistics are better suited to a defensive midfielder than a target man striker and I don't see how anyone could fail to see how we need Gibbs, Kubi, Olsen, anyone up front over Dino.

Defensively the team were sound again, not a huge amount of chances let in, and the goalkeeping error could happen to anyone. The problem with being a good defensive side but a crap attacking side is you only get a small number of chances to score, and if they aren't taken you end up with a point or worse.

The midfield made a lot of sloppy passes today but Mooy should return to improve this once again after the Brisbane match. The transfer window is opening soon, Tony Popovic must surely be looking overseas at a new key striker. If they can't find one, or if Dino keeps being used, we've got a long season ahead of us, and one that could be worse than what the rest of the team deserves.

The Wanderers next match is against Brisbane Roar at Parramatta Stadium on Sunday the 9th of December at 5:00pm Eastern Daylight Savings Time.

My heart sinks everytime I see Dino start because I know that there is no way we are going to win a game or have anything in attack with him in the team. Hoping Popovic comes up with some new tactics and answers for next weekends visit of the champions.

Ono was quite disappointing today I thought. Bridge is if not the most frustrating player to watch ever, then he's very damn close. As for Kresinger, well its all been said already.

I think there will be a big difference in the next game with Hersi and Mooy coming back. Also hopefully Gibbs is played as our striker, and I would prefer Shannon Cole at left back. We are lacking a top class striker who can link with the midfielders. We really need to start scoring goals.

topor-stanley undermines popa's philosophy of trying to play out from the back. add to that the weather, why he continued to try and hoof the ball time after time is beyond me...

that being said, being mooy-less TP still shot himself in the foot. the need for a central midfielder sitting in front of the defence who is just as comfortable on the ball as mooy is obvious and integral to how we play, instead - he puts a centre-back there...

    bridge-bashing, fine. that's a given. i'll just ignore it.

kresinger was his below-average best. but despite the penalty appeals i still think we got it wrong from the start...

Just a bad game altogether. Terrible refereeing. We missed Hersi and Mooy dearly. Should try mix up the starting 11 to see who can take it up the next level. Keen to see Kwabena start sometime. This just made my a day a lot worse. No matter, we gotta move on and take on the next game.

We might not have been great, and i no this sounds cliche (not intended) unlucky we didnt get a draw. Howler from covic in an otherwise strong game. And even the biased nz commentators said the handball was a penalty. still think we are s solid team that mainly lacks a killer edge due to lack of a goal scorer

Well I'll put a positive spin considering I was there!

I mentioned before that the conditions are horrid here and the ******* wind beat us today. We should have chanced our arm by pumping balls in and finishing a scrap, right time for that tactic.

The stadium was really a great venue. Impressive. Wellington should be up there for TOD next year, people drinking at the pubs then marching to the game would have been amazing! Just **** weather though. I still did this ofcause, but it's tough when there is only 3.

There were 5 fans in the away bay. Me, my dad who is a sideline supporter but stood and chanted a little, a random kiwi Aussie local who tried now and then, another random foreign backpacker from the USA who didn't understand active support and stood there confused ( would have told him sing or **** off but couldn't be picky), and Dejan the Qantas worker flying in and out from Bay 57.

I had a great time, it was strange directing leading the chants but apparently they were heard, that's great. Dejan and I dalecavesed for 25 minutes, by the end Phoenix kids started joining in!

May I just add, the entire team came at the end and clapped the 5 of us. It meant a great deal! Couldn't be more proud as a fan!!!

Game wasn't a spectacle but we didn't deserve to lose.

    Now back to drinking!

felt like punching on after that "performance" we need someone who can consistently score goals or we will end up last

I have. His 'slip' left him at least a meter wide of where he should have been. It was a clear misjudgement. And a slip is still a disastrous error when you're a keeper.

To start with a positive, how good were the handful of away supporters? Well done to George and the others! For massive parts of the second half the only signing you could hear was the 5 Wanderers fans belting out Dale Cevase. Also I liked the 'Bay 56 On Tour' banner.

As for on the field, the referee missed one definite penalty (the handball) and possibly another (I though Gibbs was fouled and the defender looked very guilty) and the goal was a fluke but I still don't think we deserved to win. Without Mooy we gave the ball away too often in midfield and played too many long vertical passes and through balls. We looked more dangerous when Kresigner came off for Gibbs although Wellington were starting to sit deeper at that point. I thought Trifiro got caught on the ball and gave it away too many times when he came on.

Getting Hersi back next week will be big because we seemed to lack a player who takes on defenders and I'd love to see Gibbs start but we'll be missing Mooy for one more game which is a worry.

Come on now. If anything Ante was half a foot left of where he should've been, and without the slip he would've had the ball covered within that margin. Also a slip, no matter how disastrous is not an error, ever.

1v1 Penalty shootout to decide who's right? :P

    He saves to the left,

    He saves to the right,

    He's Ante Covic,

    He saves them sometimes!!!

I have given up on Dino

    + 1

Pace is pace, & you either have it or you dont..

Also, is cousin dino aware that he's actually allowed to use his feet to shoot? Or does he think a striker is only allowed to use his head?

    End rant.

Will not boo him, nobody on here should advocate that. But I have no tolerance for him anymore. I now silently dread his name on the starting 11. Bring back Gibbs

TP start freshening the team with some younger boys who will show a bit more passion and enthusiasm.  todays game is boring.  Not sure if I want to bother with next week against brisbane. Your currrent squad is not working.  Just finished watching sydfc v heart. Between the two teams there were at least 6 very young players

If you can't support the Wanderers when we're losing then don't support us when we're winning. Simple as that.

I've edited the opening line a little, to reflect I didn't mean it was I guess an 'active' error (ie he kicked it straight to the other team) that he can be directly blamed for.

Harsh on Covic imo. He had it covered easily, until the wind grabbed the ball and changed the direction of the flight completely. In Covic's attempt at changing direction, he slipped. **** happens. Was a freak goal that should be credited to the Wind or Mother Nature since it was a cross from Brockie.

    2 clear penalties though  :xmad:

And George...learn Dale Cavese properly! the "wooooah" part is not the same melody four times. They are distinctively different. I've noticed when watched our home games back that many in Bay 56 do it wrong and it sounds no where near as good as it should

Agreed. Way too many people sing it wrong. Either they don't know it or they're just tone deaf. Gotta get a decent recording of it and share it around for all to listen and learn.

To be fair it was half a dozen guys, most of which aren't regular RBB members. They still managed to sing for longer than the Yellow Disease or whatever they're called.
