  • 10 Man Wanderers Succumb 1-0 To City

    Artiz Borda's red card left the Wanderers in a deep hole they were unable to overcome, after Ivan Franjic hammered a thunderbolt to open the scoring.

    With the new year came a new formation for the visitors, with Tony Popovic under pressure to produce results, he elected to play a somewhat unusual 4-4-2 formation, with Mitch Nichols & Nico Martinez taking up a fluid attacking duo, with Jumpei Kusukami, Jaushua Sotirio, Bruno Pinatares & Kearyn Baccus making up the 4 man midfield. Ex Sydney FC goalkeeper made his debut for the Wanderers.

    20 minutes into the game and the home side were in front. From a corner, Kearyn Baccus was first to the ball but he only managed to find Ivan Franjic lurking on the edge of the penalty area. The fullback attempted an audacious side footed first time volley on his right foot. It swerved like a missile into the top corner of Janjetovic's goal.

    Unfortunately for Popovic, his formational innovation was short lived. After half an hour Borda was given his marching orders. With the ball out on the left flank, Borda marked up Fornaroli, and Borda made contact with his elbow into the strikers head. The referee judged it worth a red card, and Borda left the field as his opponent remained prone on the turf.

    The rest of the game was marked by Melbourne's inability to punish the Wanderers with a second goal, and the Wanderers trying in vain to force an equaliser. The best chance for the Wanderers fell to substitute Lachlan Scott, who had a ball fall nicely at his feet, only to see his snapshot on the turn fly just wide of the post.

    Popovic will be forced to make a chance to his defence once again, with the likely result of Robbie Cornthwaite & Jonathan Aspro playing together in central defence. It remains to be seen if Popovic will stick to his new strikerless formation against Sydney FC.

    I'm not sure where our goals are going to come from. We played ok as per usual but no cutting edge. Just hope Popa doesn't use the "if we took our chances" line because it's wearing a little thin.

    We played with zero strikers and therefore scored zero goals.

    I don't care if Jumpei is our +1 for the ACL, **** get rid of him and Borda.

     

    To his credit Pina played well.

     

    Bring back bridge, sign McDonald and someone like Honda as marquee pls.

    Despite the loss there were some positives:

     

    Janjetovic showed in his shot-stopping (last minute), his communication and his distribution throughout that he will be a real asset.

     

    Cornthwaite was excellent when he came in for the justifiably sent off Borda. [Why the hell anybody raises their elbow in such a circumstance (like the defender who raises his arms to a ball in the penalty area), I will never know. Cornthwaite should be given an extended run, as he displayed the sort of form we expected when he was signed.

     

    Baby Baccus also looked like a very positive addition, moving forward with significant speed, good control and vision.

     

    Martinez showed a few great touches, be I feel had his worst game in a WSW shirt, losing possession when trying to carry the ball, far too often.

     

    We still lack urgency and should press forward more, but for a loss, there were more positives than usual.

    Cornflakes showed good positioning and timing for someone who hasn't had a run. He was a vast improvement over the slow Borda, who has been a very poor recruit.

    The way it sounded that Popa was getting into Pinatares, I reckon he might get a plane ticket soon. I thought he wasn't so bad tonight - had a bit of grit.

    That one handed save was sweet. I don't remember a save like that since Covic, just goes to show how poor our keeping stocks have been in recent times.

     

     

    But anyway....We're so ****ed next week.

    I feel next week we will stop the Smurf juggernaut and if we do sweet FA for the rest of the season that will be our consolation. All those saying they aren't going to go are going to miss the biggest HAL upset since we won the Premiers plate in our inaugural year.

    We have nothing to lose.  #MacDonaldHatTrick

    One of our worst, if not THE worst performance of the season.

    I'm not quite sure what Popa thinks is an acceptable performance this year, but that certainly wasn't it.

    If I hear him say that we were dominant again, I think I'm going to lose my ****.

    First half yes but not second half. With 10 men it was a fantastic effort.

    If I was Popa I would send Borda off on an errand to get something he 'has forgotten in the sheds' and drive the **** off with the team bus without him.

    Baby Baccus > Neville > hammil

    Team with Jumpei > team without Jumpei

    Although Baby Baccus did well for his brief cameo on the field there is a big difference between playing the last 10-15mins & starting a match. We don't have the luxury at this stage of starting a youth player to be taken off at 60 or even earlier.

    The worst thing about the red card, down to ten men, poor we us "valiant in defeat" performance is that it distracts from the utter crap we played in the first half hour. We seem to be getting worse, more disjointed and more in denial the longer the season goes.

      Its the coach, the football played last night and against Jordan was atrocious, Toure should have been hooked at half time and be replaced by either of the Kuol boys.

      Pep Guardiola: "I'm going to defend you until the last day of our lives in the press". Rudan: Runs onto the field at full-time to berate an attacker for a goal coughed up by the two fullbacks being lazy, then slates him in a post-game interview and the press conference.  Sure, he apologised for "singling him out", did he apologise for singling out the wrong player to start with? The Mariners & Nix finished 5th & 6th in 21/22 when Rudan took over. Rudan's second year we finished 4th then lost to the smurfs in Round 1 while the Mariners won the Grand Final. 3rd year, CCM are the favourites for the Premiership, the Nix have a chance if CCM drop points, and we're back in 6th with a game tomorrow against a team who beat us 7-0 earlier in the season that if we lose we're out of the finals spots, and even if we made it, we're probably just going to lose to Victory in Week 1. I'm so over this ****. Rudan has had three years and done **** all to improve things, he's not done well enough to add all this pointless drama and bullshit.
