  • Adelaide Late Show Takes Point

    mack

Adelaide United have snatched a late draw against a Western Sydney Wanderers team who would be extremely disappointed with their inability to close out the game.

The visiting side had the first chance of the game after breaking down the right, Nikola Mileusnic cut a ball across the 6 yard box beyond the reach of Vedran Janjetovic but just as Ryan Kitto was shaping up for a tap-in the ball was nicked away by Raul Llorente.

The Wanderers somehow managed not to take the lead in the 14th minute. Robbie Cornthwaite lobbed a ball forward onto the chest of Oriol Riera who bought the ball down and hammered it onto the woodwork. It rebounded to the feet of Steven Lustica, the winger taking a touch instead of shooting first time and giving Jordan Elsey enough time to recover his position to block the eventual shot on the goal-line.

Mark Bridge could easily have opened the scoring just before half-time with two efforts going wide, the first a volley from a Lustica cross that blazed across the turf and just missed the far post and the second what would have been a carbon copy of his goal against Melbourne City if not for the fact he put it into the stands.

Not long after the break the Wanderers did have the opening goal from an unlikely source. In his 6th season in the A-League Jack Clisby finally had his first goal. Kearyn Baccus dribbled through the Adelaide midfield, and his offside trap springing pass to Roly Bonevacia had Bridge & Clisby lining up for the cross, Roly found Clisby on the edge of the 6 yard box and the fullback couldn't miss.

With both sides going to the subs bench the game never looked like being won by the Wanderers or lost by Adelaide. Mark Ochieng blasted past the far post of Vedran Janetovic, and then Adelaide had the equaliser in the 85th minute through Apostolos Stamatelopoulos. Taylor Reagan flicked on from a corner, Ryan Strain strenched to knock the ball back into the middle and the Wanderers marking fell apart, giving Stamatelopoulos the freedom to hammer into an empty net from point blank range.

The Wanderers face Wellington on Saturday the 13th in New Zealand.

Scott didnt manage to do anything all match apart from a bunch of terrible passes, it was a very weird match to watch but i am content with the draw mostly just didnt like how it happened, it was nice us being attacking but maybe a bit too attacking with half our team being attacking players

    Scott was excellent against Brisbane..

Tonight he stank... He was a pass away from our 2nd goal, he had 2-3 chances , but completely stuffed up. His passes were too heavy or misplaced..

If we had a winger with quality to replace Jumpei already, the 3 points would have been in the bag.

Tonight, the most frustrating thing was that we produced so many chances we couldn't capitalise on in the first half. 0-0 isn't good enough after that first half.

That team that should not be spoken of here would have nailed some of them at least. That's why they win games and we don't.

I was extremely unhappy with our lethargy before we took the lead but generally for most of the 2nd half. I really think we are not any where as fit as what we need to be. Bridge was walking when we were defending in the 2nd half, but when we were attacking, he somehow found an extra leg. I noticed this with several of the players.

Also, tonight convinced me that if Gombau wants us to play his style of football, an overhaul of playing staff is needed. We do not have enough players with the speed nor skills to accommodate it. Herd was awful. Bonevacia again turning over possession all too easily too often. He has been a major disappointment this season. The poor pass from Scott that led to the AU goal wasn't my issue so much as why didn't he shoot farkin instead? From my high vantage position, he had so much time and so much space before his poor pass. Lorente also was in the same position at one stage and did the same thing.

2 points lost and lucky to get 1.

I'll take the 1 point, but this was a game for the taking and we didn't. Do they need another visit from the RBB?

Also, it's so sad what Olympic Park is doing to us as a club. Atmosphere was dire, and I really missed the drums in the RBB. Pirtek V2 seriously cannot come quickly enough.

Some of the selections were due to injury and not trusting the youngsters on the bench. Plus squad rotation for the quick turnaround for Saturday had to be on the coach's mind.

Herd was not as agricultural as he was against Brisbane. Bridge should have subbed instead of Herd. Isaias got the upper hand after that sub.

Hamill for Roly was uninspiring, why not Grozos to keep the pressure on.

Riera was double-teamed for the whole game.

Strange game, atmosphere zero. Why the ground was watered so much before the game? Players were slipping all over the place and in some areas the ball wasn't wnen rolling properly.

In the 1st half, we had a few good changes that we should have finished. Our defense was getting caught every single time but somehow managed to get a clearance every time.

Second half we looked tired. Happy for Clisby but the subs lost us the midfield. At the end a draw was a fair result we didn't deserve the 3pts.

Yep. I think a few older and slower players may be replaced at seasons end.

We do certainly lack pace which opposition teams know.I was also amazed at the amount of space and time on the ball our defenders gave Adelaide around our goal. Still, we are competing and not getting belted. A point was a fair result for us.

That team was painfully slow front to back. The two centre backs lack mobility, diawarra was killing them. And across the front line no pace at all.

We were very narrow to both in attack and defence, in part from playing a central midfielder on the right wing and a left back at right back.

Second half they destroyed us on the right, Gombau changed it bring Scott on but it didn’t work.

So any news on a the Jumpei replacement we badly need some spark?

Not great work to seemingly not have anything lined up for Jan, when you see quality player jets brought in

Could have been 4-4 such we’re the chances both teams defending left a bit to be desired

I thought cornwaite was great really patching up a midfield being overrun at times

Scott is still a young player, I’ve not no issue with him being up and down that’s what young players Do and for all those bagging remember all we have done is bag sotorio or jumpei before him

until we recruit this foreign winger we have to accept we don’t have a quality player for that wide position - cejudo doesn’t seem like it’s his game and bridge isn’t a natural wide player either especially now he’s getting on

dissapointing to concede on set piece but nice to see an 18 year old score on debut the kid will be buzzing this morning

Quick turnaround now for nix game

is it just me or do we seem to draw with Adelaide at home all the time? Need to check stats

Gk stats give us a picture

    Shots faced 7

    Saves 6

    Claimed crossed 2

Miluesnic was beating Clisby more times than not, need Llorente at left back. Raul not that good attacking at RB but he did keep Kitto quiet on the left wing. Need Risdon to recover from injury.

Cornthwaite and Thwaite were ok but were caught out when Clisby didn't track back.

Herd was a little sedate probably because Evans must have warned him since he was the ref for both games.

Baccus Snr was too unselfish and should have taken at least one shot as should Roly have as well.

Lustica was not the answer ar right but can't fault his effort. Need Cejudo to recover from injury.

Bridge was a little off his game last night and should have been subbed for Scott.

Riera double-teamed all night but had poor service.

We needed Herd or Roly to stay on the pitch and Grozos given a go replacing Lustica instead of Hamill.

For the game against the Nix, there will be some enforced squad rotation (Herd and Cornthwaite shouldboth be suspended) so i think the squad (4-4-2 diamond) wil be

    Vedran

    Risdon, Hamill, Thwaite, Llorente

    Lustica/Baccus Snr

    Baccus Snr/Lustica, Bonevacia

    Bridge

    Santalab, Riera

Bench Tyson, Clisby, Scott, Grozos, Majok or Tokich (if fit)

    some thoughts

    - first half especially clisby was torn a new one. they got him behind him on a half dozen occasions and corny, thwaite and llorente (great sliding tackle at back post tracking his man to save goal - take note risdon!) took turns bailing him out.
    - herd takes too many touches and is too slow moving the ball. he is a destroyer not a distributor. in gombau's system the dm is meant to drop between the two cb's and distribute the ball - not sure if he has the passing range to do this - its not his game imo. I do like that he gives us a bit of steel in midfield though - him and baccus sr at the base of a 4231 would be the way for mine.
    - great play by baccus for the goal - pierced the defence with his dribbling and then timed the pass nicely. need more of this type of play from him that saw him emerge under popa but its not normally what gombau wants from his centre mids. will be interesting to see where to from here?
    - janjetovic had a good game - goal not his fault - 4 defenders like statues in the 6 yard box watching the ball not the man. very soft goal to concede but it was coming - they absolutely dominated last 20 min.
-bizarre subs. we got away with strangely attacking subs in brisbane but it backfired last night. just bring the young fella on to play in midfield rather than santa or hamill out of position - otherwise why even have him on the bench?
    - while I agree that we lacked pace, I thought we moved the ball around quite nicely at times and off the ball movement was certainly better than against city. work in progress I guess
    - the penalty shout by riera was soft but very similar too the one carney got in the first derby. that yellow against corny was thoroughly baffling - he needs to work on his ability to disappear I think because I can't see what else he could have done.

overall not a bad result. some good some bad although looking at the team sheets and the players they had missing we should have won but that's football.

I don't know but not many rbb members are coming to games this season anymore they hate the stadiums ( soulless and stadium Australia) and stadium security are banning certain items such as banners, drums and flags this is why we want to go to back to WSS so bad because stadium security have been strict on us and not many are going to games this season and next because of stadium change but wait till WSS is finished the rbb will be buzzing and will be back to what it's used to be like :good:

    I completely understand this 100%

Its an absolute chore going to that ******* graveyard every week.

I refuse to take any new people to a Wanderers game until we get back home.

    It’s embarrassing.

What was up with the RBB, sounded terrible. No drums. Out of Sync. Didn’t sound like many people were singing either.

Midweek game means some people couldn't make it. Only had 1 small drum which you apparently couldn't hear after a few rows so it was easy to lose sync.

ANZ is a soulless place with anything less than 60k. So trying to get the active firing with no drums when theres like half a bay in that cavern is a mammoth task.

People were singing but it wasn't very inspired - due to the above.

That's all there was to it. Don't read too much into anything else.

And lolz at Clisby getting MOTM. Well done social media and wsw fans. A goal does not equal MOTM. 70% of the above posts say he was terrible for most of the game. People really need to look beyond merely a goal when deciding MOTM.

From what I saw, Gombau should have shut up shop instead of going for the cushion of 2-0. It backfired when we lost our midfield. Depleted stocks probably had something to do with it and now we have to travel to Wellington with a couple day turnaround, because FFA.

    • We are competitive again. We weren't a few weeks ago.
    • Feels like two lost points, but the Reds could have taken us to the cleaners in the first half. Llorente saved our arse more than once, he was excellent.
    • Oriol had two defenders standing on his feet for much of the game. It opened up space for Lustica and Bridgey who, between the two of them, could have score five or six goals. They didn't, and it cost us.
    • What also cost us was the 4-1-5 (or whatever it was) Gombau special formation. As soon as Herd came off the Reds' midfielders had the upper hand.

    Onwards through the fog.

result was a bit meh, best part of the night was a venture into the members bar, i was very skeptical but it was a nice, relaxed atmosphere pre match with some w-league players and tyson mingling, followed by a Q/A session.

if you are stuck at SOP early, its worth the visit

I think it was an even game and a draw was a fair result. Yea I can be bitter because we created chances but Adelaide had some great ones as well especially on our flanks. Most of all I think Gombau lost our midfield with the changes in the second half, I like Scott but maybe Majok would have been better on the wing with his genuine pace.

Janjetovic was immense yet again for our result  and I do find it disturbing he has double the amount of saves the next keeper has had to make in the entire A-league.

Lol we could have used Jumpei in the last 10 mins last night

Annoying that we let players go before we have anyone lined up ....I know you cannot get anyone in before a spot is released but you don't release players without a replacement in line.
