  • Adelaide Late Show Takes Point

    mack

Adelaide United have snatched a late draw against a Western Sydney Wanderers team who would be extremely disappointed with their inability to close out the game.

The visiting side had the first chance of the game after breaking down the right, Nikola Mileusnic cut a ball across the 6 yard box beyond the reach of Vedran Janjetovic but just as Ryan Kitto was shaping up for a tap-in the ball was nicked away by Raul Llorente.

The Wanderers somehow managed not to take the lead in the 14th minute. Robbie Cornthwaite lobbed a ball forward onto the chest of Oriol Riera who bought the ball down and hammered it onto the woodwork. It rebounded to the feet of Steven Lustica, the winger taking a touch instead of shooting first time and giving Jordan Elsey enough time to recover his position to block the eventual shot on the goal-line.

Mark Bridge could easily have opened the scoring just before half-time with two efforts going wide, the first a volley from a Lustica cross that blazed across the turf and just missed the far post and the second what would have been a carbon copy of his goal against Melbourne City if not for the fact he put it into the stands.

Not long after the break the Wanderers did have the opening goal from an unlikely source. In his 6th season in the A-League Jack Clisby finally had his first goal. Kearyn Baccus dribbled through the Adelaide midfield, and his offside trap springing pass to Roly Bonevacia had Bridge & Clisby lining up for the cross, Roly found Clisby on the edge of the 6 yard box and the fullback couldn't miss.

With both sides going to the subs bench the game never looked like being won by the Wanderers or lost by Adelaide. Mark Ochieng blasted past the far post of Vedran Janetovic, and then Adelaide had the equaliser in the 85th minute through Apostolos Stamatelopoulos. Taylor Reagan flicked on from a corner, Ryan Strain strenched to knock the ball back into the middle and the Wanderers marking fell apart, giving Stamatelopoulos the freedom to hammer into an empty net from point blank range.

The Wanderers face Wellington on Saturday the 13th in New Zealand.

lol...used him for what purpose? give the ball away cheaply or failing to track his player?

this...he's only been gone a couple of weeks but already the castelan coloured glasses are out :)

I believe had we taken our chances we could've cruised to victory, but we didn't and the reds got a better result than I think they probably deserved...if anything perhaps we should started with our Gombau'esq 4-4-2 like against Citeh but we also have a game in Welly on sat and we're not exactly flush with cattle and Santa can't exactly go 90 3 games in a row like Oriel

...so not the best result but also not the worst - we were being pulled apart 3 games ago

Who mentioned Castelan? I was merely pointing out that Jumpei would have been a liability.....unfortunately however, Scott was doing his best Jumpei impression last night after a decent cameo against Brisbane.

And I completely agree - just like Castelan was just as wasteful until the end during our final run to the GF, but people still pine for him forgetting the 2 seasons (when he wasnt injured) where he didnt pass...couldnt shoot and never came back past half way...and now its the same with Jumpie...and probably Sortiro when that glorious day comes

How not to defend a home ground lead and by games end fortunate to have not lost. Clisby  ??, Really. From top to bottom the RBB was pitiful. I got a sense of what constitutes Active for most clubs. I have never seen us like this and for those concluding it was a one off well you haven't been watching this space over the last season and a half. By the time Parra is rebuilt security the club marshalls and the FFA will have suffocated whatever voices remain. It may not be this sad again but S2 Active ain't returning either. One kid broke a chair in goal celebration and he was set on as if he had let off six flares and stabbed the keeper. How things have changed and the penalty for youthful exuberance.

So did Herd have 5 yellows before last night or not? If he did, are we likely to get done for playing an ineligible player?

I'd take a fit Romeo now for the run-in.

    Positives:

    - When we create an attacking chance, we create damn good ones and its definitely a different style of play.

    - Lustica may not be a winger, but his delivery and final ball/decision making is creating alot of chances for us, and a sign of why we need to find the right winger with a mix of this and pace!

    - Cornthwaites distribution from the back was great.

    - oh and were still undefeated!

    - VERDRAN!!!

    Negatories:

    - We get cut to pieces down the flanks still. Oriol would LOVE paying for Adelaide.

    - Bridge may have a knack for poping in some goals and some clever work in the 18 yard box, but his downsides are sooo hard to ignore. In attack we loose everything a winger should offer in pace, runs (smart ones) and creativity. And in defence...... well he is just too lazy and doesn't have the engine anymore. I really feel for Clisby and Raul. Clisby is a shoddy defensive reader, but it cant help at all to constantly be 1 v 2 all game.

    - Baccus still dishing very up and down performances. Can look dazzling one minute when he chooses to run at the defence, or quickly spread the ball. And can kill an attack or find the opposition on every other attack. His defence is utterly non-existent. Always stands in weird positions, and when we attack and loose the ball, the opposition ALWAYS recovers the loose ball and Baccus is found in no mans land or in conversation with Cornflakes.

    - Herd's discipline. We need this guy on the field every game for 90+ minutes. Sure guilty of hanging onto the ball a couple times, but his head and shoulders our best midfielder. Should hopefully push higher up with Baccus Junior playing DM and Herd pressing from higher up. Baccus snr and Roly to battle it out for the other spot.

    - Tactics when in the lead.....

Lol do you think Scott was an improvement?

    He costs us 2pts.

Yep just saw that and I agree.

My point wasn't how good Jumpei was, (he should he been let go after last season) it was that you don't release a starting player (prior the busiest period) before lining up a replacement.

Scott did a good job of that, he was the ideal replacement in that sense

Ideally we should have had somebody lined up and in straight away but let’s face it Jumpei offered nothing so if it was an opportunity to get rid and free up foriegn spot then it’s good we took it provided we can use that spot soon

The only action in Active was the confiscation of the Barmey Army's tifo. The panic amongst the police and seccos etc was something. You would think the English would be more security conscious around their merch but there you go. Unfortunately the 'culprits' were visually id that was widespread posted so they may have been stung. Anyways losing The Ashes and your tifo sure made some poms assembling outside Active pissed.

Yep Thwaite gave himself up by throwing his arms in the air and looking for someone else to blame. That’s the standard thing a player does when they’re the one at fault for a player being unmarked and scoring.

Don't know how a substitute winger/striker can be blamed for losing us 2 points. Conceding at a set piece with piss poor marking from both CBs is what is to blame. The fact that Adelaide got TWO touches to the ball before it was scored is another finger to point.

    Not at Scott.
