  • City Tear Maladroit Wanderers Apart

    mack

One of the worst performances by the Western Sydney Wanderers has seen them obliterated by finals bound Melbourne City 3-0 tonight in Melbourne.

The story of the game was heartless, inept football in both attack and defence, that gifted the game to Melbourne City with the Wanderers not managing a single shot on target in the 90 minutes. It was an abysmal display, one that should be utterly embarrassing for the players and the staff and raises extreme questions about the ongoing employment at the club from the CEO to the coaching staff and the players.

No team wearing the Red & Black of the Wanderers should ever play like that, with numerous players clearly looking disinterested. Our season is over with or without a finals match we'd lose to one of the Melbourne teams or Adelaide.

The only chance of the game for the Wanderers was Oriol Riera, one of the few who cared, hitting the bar from a corner that was played out for a corner by a City defender in the 40th minute.

From that corner Melbourne City took the lead with a counter-attack. After clearing the corner, it fell for Atkinson, he evaded Chris Ikonomidis, and Michael Thwaite failed to cut him down for a foul & a yellow card. Spraying the ball wide to Daniel Arzani, before Raul Llorente could close him down the young winger fired a cross into the 6 yard box. Thwaite once again failed to deal with the danger, the ball rolled into the path of Bruno Fornaroli who couldn't miss from 6 yards out.

The early stages of the second half came and went until Alvaro Cejudo completely failed his team by refusing to mark his designated player. To top off an abysmal performance as the Wanderers attacking pivot, Cejudo let Michael Jakobsen have the freedom of the penalty area to meet a cross from a short corner and blast it unerringly past Janjetovic again from 6 yards out.

Stefan Mauk completed the rout in the 66th minute with another penetrating attack from City. Hamill, Bonevacia & Lustica did their best impression of traffic cones as Mauk & Fornaroli played a one two, Fornaroli with a backheel that Mauk ran on and fired a first time shot into the bottom corner.

It was as much as City deserved and far less than the Wanderers did. I've seen a lot of bad performances in the past few years but this one ranks well up there. You could count with a few fingers the players who were playing for the shirt and most of them looked disinterested even before City hit the front. Combined with schoolboy errors in defence, a midfield trio who found the sideline or a city player more than they found their own team-mates, and a squad who couldn't even manage a single shot on target. Marc Tokich may look back on his A-League debut fondly, but it will not be because of the result of the game. That was one of the only high spots of the match and in the end it was little more than a 10 minute cameo.

Barring the miracle of miracles this team will either make the finals and lose in week one or finish 7th or 8th. The players, the coaching staff and the higher up club management need to take a good long hard look at how they've let the Champions of Asia fall from grace this far. It might not be the disaster zone that exists for the Mariners or Wellington Phoenix, but this club should be a top four club every season without fail, not a collection of awkward, bumbling, incompetents completely detached from the fans who pay good money to watch this garbage, running around with no pride in their performance.

Next week away to the Victory looks like being a turkey shoot for Melbourne and one I'm not looking forward to. Gombau needs to give the players a kick in the arse and send them on some old school treatment to remind them to earn their money off and on the pitch. Start with 200 laps of the training pitch at lunchtime tomorrow and go from there.

If we get smashed again next week I will use it.

Well....that might alleviate the pain of another horrible loss if you do.;)

All sacking would do is blame Gombau for the failures of Popa to recruit a squad who can't pass the ball 5 meters unless it's backwards or to an opposition player. Would it improve our chances next year. Maybe. Maybe not. Who knows. If the owners fail to get overseas targets again (or perhaps, fail to give them the money required) like they did before they signed Gombau, we might end up with someone worse like Paul Okon.

We had Dirk Schuster, and then his agent rang the next day.. The club didn't object to the amount of money, but the way Schuster's agent went about it. Bit like buying a car, and being asked to paya sack full of extra money to get the keys.

Sacking Gombau now might just breathe some life back into team, club and supporters, and salvage something. Instead, I dare say that you are going to write a few more depressing match reports before the final curtain falls.

Ah, the good old "it's not his squad" myth. So what?? Managers manage.

I just looked at the table of Germany's BL1. Bayern, Dortmund, Stuttgart, Bremen, and Koeln changed coaches during the season, no change of the squad required for performances to pick up. Admittingly, no such luck for Hamburg, and no surprises there: they've been a basket case for years.

I don't know what exactly Gombau is, but a football manager in the traditional sense he is not.

Popa wouldn't accept the team to play like that despite how crap our roster is and u can see these guys don't want to give 100% to Gombau. I was prepared to give Gombau a go with his own squad but a showing like this and other games makes me question his ability to coach a team and get them motivated.

This is where I'm at with it all. Its probably a bit from column A, Popa made shite signings, a bit from column B, that Gombau hasn't commanded the respect of the players which is crucial to the team applying his playing style. And finally, a bit from column C, the players have forgotten that its also their fricken responsibility to put in the effort every single game for the team they are signed with, and for the fans that pay to come and see them every week.

I wrote loads of them in Popa's last season so this isn't that different. Even if we lost the last 3 games Gombau (and the 5 weeks of Foxe) have still managed to get this clearly awful squad within 6 points of what Popa did in his last season with Popa's own squad, and with a full pre-season, with a team trained in the exact tactics Popa wanted to use. I think some people are underestimating what he's manage to do, and overestimating what any manager could do within the limits of the A-League.

honestly which is more important coach or squad? because if i was real madrid's coach even i who knows **** all about football could coach them to a win over the pitt town pirates under 6's side

and that is what we are right now, both coaches are somewhat to blame but i still want to see him with his own squad, there is no easy fix for where we are right now

i love how you keep comparing this situation to those in germany like its the same exact situation, as much as i would love the A-league to be like the top tier of german football we are in 2 different universes

Maybe there's just a cancer of uncertainty from the players about their future and all they have to play for is a contract in Gosford. The club malaise however is a microcosm of the state of affairs in the A League and FFA. Maybe "the leadership group" that needs ousting isn't at Parra.

And unfortunately we'll never know what a proper football coach might have done with this awful squad. The Jets, on paper, looked ordinary. Merrick made them sing.

    Nothing could stop Gombau's Reds? A 6th and a 4th spot = unstoppable?

When we had the dreadful season after the ACL win we beat Gombau's Reds at Parra.

The only thing positive about last night is that we were again shite and we are surpassing weekly our shiteness, our consistency is 100%. Onwards and downwards. Our most inept and worst performance of the season.

Looking forward to the off-season and the orgasm and feeling the glow and expectation of a new season can't come quick enough.

We'll never know a lot of things. What if we kept Foxe. Or signed the German bloke. Or if Popa stayed. I can't see anyone being good enough to have add 17 points to our current total to get us into 2nd. I don't see another 10 points to put us in the ACL playoff spot. Popa couldn't win an FFA Cup. Foxe didn't get us past Adelaide, at home in this season's FFA Cup.

    Who Popa signed last year:

    • Tyson - Dud
    • Lustica - Mediocre squad player
    • Pinatares - Dud
    • Borda - Top 5 worst foreign player.
    • Jumpei - Dud
    • Cornthwaite - Average. Dud this year.
    • Clisby - Good
    • Melling - Dud
    • Bulut - Dud
    • Martinez - Average
    • Vedran - Average
    • Antonis - Mid season emergency who improved the team but not enough to get us past week 1 of the finals.
    • Griffiths - Dud
    • Zinni - Dud

    And this year:

    • Risdon. Dud
    • Roly. Dud
    • Thwaite. Mediocre
    • Riera. Quality
    • Herd. Dud
    • Bridge. Average
    • Cejudo. Top 10 worst foreign player.
    • Llorente. Average.

    Who has Gombau bought in?

    • Carrusca. Better than any of the other midfielders this year in attack.
    • Ikon. Better than any of the other wingers in attack.

Not only that, but it was probably our worst performance ever.

ANNNND not only that - I can't really remember a worse/more insipid  performance from any other A League team - ever - and I've been watching since season 2.

Please.... prove me wrong - remind me of something worse!

My worst WSW performance list (A-League):

    1. 4-1 vs Victory Round 1 (14/15)
    2. 5-0 vs Smurfs Round 17 (17/18)
    3. 4-0 vs Smurfs Round 13 (16/17)
    4. 5-2 vs Nix Round 19 (15/16)
    5. 4-0 vs Newcastle Rd 12 (17/18)
    6. 3-0 vs City Round 23 (17/18)

Which of those first 2 are the worst is a very subjective thing. For me, I was expecting a massive loss in the 5-0 game (and said pre-game anything better than 5-0 would be a success), but going on an away trip to Melbourne, first game of the season, still going hard in the ACL and getting smashed was so deflating when the final whistle sounded.

Once you get past those you're into the semi-common 3-0 losses we've suffered over the course of our club.

In terms of the worst ever A-League performances, I consider the worst ever performance to be Adelaide vs Melbourne Victory in the 06/07 Grand Final where they went 2-0 down in half an hour, Ross Aloisi get sent off then they copped another 4 goals to lose it 6-0. Archie Thompson got 5 goals which is still the record for most goals in a game by a player.

North Queensland got beaten 8-1 by Adelaide in 2010/11 where Sergio Van Dijk and Marcos Flores both scored hat-tricks.

Newcastle copped 7 unaswered goals in January 2015 against Adelaide.

There's a raft of teams who have been beaten by 6 goals and the pick of those was probably Wellington losing 7-1 to Sydney FC in 2012/13.

I dont care if they are popa's signing, Gombau has had enough time to make them competitive. On paper, we should be, on the field, we're terrible.

    1. Roly is no DM. We had one in Herd, but seems like he is gonski

    2. Bridge continues to play. He has not got the pace to play this system. He also subs Ikonimidis all the time, rather than Bridge.

    3. Cejudo, Ive been patient, but now it has wore thin. Play him right wing (where he played la liga) or out of there.

4.We really have no plan of attack rather than pass the ball in defence and CDM. Then play a long diagonal ball to our wingers.

    5. With our system Riera is isolated, hence why he needs to drop so far back to be involved in the play.

Gombau plan B is to do plan A better. We are an absolute bore to watch.

You are quite fortunate in some respects here that there is no relegation and you have a micky mouse post season cup competition.

Following the Boro I can recall some truly horrendous games that mean't everything, or seemed to at the time-

May 1986, going down to defeat in the last game of the season away at Shrewsbury Town and  relegated to the old 3rd division, club entering liquidation and being wound up in the law courts, Middlesbrough FC 1876 ceased to exist after that game. The Boro fans rioted in the ground throughout the game, numerous pitch invasions, set fire to the food stall behind the ground, bricks and coins flying like snow. My old man and me asking a fella to open the ******* turnstile and let us out! Shame off the pitch and on that day, blackest day in Boro's history.

1997 - make both the league and FA cup finals, lose both and relegated on a 3 point deduction by the FA and we lose our best players, and you have to remember Middlesbrough is a small town, it impacted on the moral of the whole place, it was devastating.

Not trying to say the game yesterday wasn't bad or anything, it is and not acceptable, but nothing like the way I felt after the above.

    • Best shown by a chance Toure had when an Indonesian player had fallen over, he had a simple ball about 10 meters that would have put one of our attackers clean through for a one on one. He over-hit it and ruined the chance. Also falling for the same old Asian team diving & time wasting, by giving away stupid fouls to let them fall over and sit on the ground for minutes. 11 minutes stoppage time is probably half what it deserved.
    • Yet again, a failure of pace and power football over technically skilled football in on display in the Olyroos vs Indonesia.  We need to develop skills over pace at all levels
    • Milanovic & Brook should have been on the next flight home at half-time.
