  • Foxe's Men Hunt Down Glory

    mack

Oriol Riera scored his first A-League goal for the Wanderers, with Jumpei Kusukami adding a second to help Hayden Foxe to his maiden managerial win as his side ran out 2-1 winners over Perth Glory tonight.

With Hayden Foxe taking over as caretaker from the departed Tony Popovic, the Wanderers lined up as expected in the same formation they've used since inception. The home side were well on top for the entire first half, but it took 42 minutes for the Wanderers to breach the stoic Perth backline. Alvaro Cejudo picked up a loose ball 25 yards out from goal, before threading a cute reverse pass for the #9 Riera. The big striker made no mistake with the calm right foot finish past Liam Reddy.

In the moments before half-time the Wanderers doubled their lead. With Perth failing to track back after losing possession from an attacking corner, Brendan Hamill galloped into an acre of space down the right flank, before passing through for Jumpei, who flashed a toe poke past the onrushing Reddy.

Oriol Riera could have had a hat-trick early in the second half. Chris Herd dinked a chip over the Perth defence that Riera could only snatch at the shot and put it well over the bar. Not longer after he put a head over goal again.

Perth came back as they always do, laying siege to the Wanderers defence and eventually profiting through a Wanderers own goal. Andy Keogh headed a cross in towards goal, taking an extremely harsh deflection off the knee of Hamill to take it past the despairing Janjetovic. The Glory kept attacking but were unable to penetrate the Wanderers goal of their own accord, giving the Wanderers a 2-1 win and their best opening to a season ever.

The Wanderers face the Central Coast next weekend on Saturday, 5:45PM kick-off at Sydney Showground.

Missed the warm-up, what happened with Andy?

The pre-match was a comedy of errors.

After the usual "get advertising blasted at you at 200 decibels for an hour" they finally started the pre-game stuff.

Perth Glory walked out and whoever was on the mic at that point got the crowd to cheer, thinking it was WSW.

Then when the pre-game player intros began the video & Andy's list were completely mismatched. They got through about half the lineup before stopping & restarted, and got it wrong again.

Then half way through the second run through, Andy P having no idea how the run sheet had no correlation to the graphics, the RBB started Glorious

Being behind the RBB not sure if he gave up or tried to power through

Had our seats moved from the graveyard in the north eastern corner (bay 248), to bay 210.  MASSIVE difference. what they were thinking putting people in that corner in the first place, i dont know.

also had the bonus of being entertained for an hour pre-match watching the seat shuffle, apparently the bay we are in now was GA last year, now its seated members, naturally ga peeps turned up to sit where they sat last year, only to be constantly moved.

Good night out :) Haven't been to many games lately (working in Parramatta made it so easy prior to last season, and the addition of the newborn last year), but SOP is slowly feeling like 'home'. Crowd was vocal and the team played well. Felt like the shackles were loosened too. Good result, good crowd. Good night for all.

    • We looked strong but Alvarro and Herd really started getting heavy legs and were cooked by 70 mins. Not sure on the Spaniards track record but Herd has a very problematic history regarding staying fit. Not a good sign as they were both key in our dominant first half.
    • As we all know you live or die on your foreign contingent.
    • Andreu looked the goods (as we well know) when he came on and started pulling the strings for The Glory.
    • Jumpei is still crap. Over elaborates and can't shoot. Happy to be proven wrong but if I remember correctly he started OK last year too and then melted like a chocolate teapot
    • Defence looks no nonsense strong.
    • Very impressed by Baccus and Roly. The latter has an excellent engine.
    • Crowd was par for a Sunday evening timeslot bearing in mind a first game bounce. Hoping for 14K at least next Saturday.
    • Bring on the Smurfs. Should be a cracker.

Wait till Alvaro get match fitness, Popa hasnt played him enough.

Great start to the season! We bossed them in the first half and i see a lot of positivity from our plays and how quick we are in transition from defend to attack.

    Pros:

    Rieras goal
    - Cejudos assist
    - Hamils assist
    - Jumpeis goal
    - Llorente... probably will be our best signing this season. Showed so much class in both defence and leadership.
    - No Sotorio

    Cons:
    - Foxe mistake was taking Herd off and Perf started dominating our midfield.
    - Hamil's defence at RB

Herd was slightly injured, no risks taken.

Obviously a positive outcome here, and I agree with everything that I've read here. Such a refreshing result on the scoreboard and also by the performances by our new signings. I will bask in this for as long as possible.

Not playing Cejudo and Llorente much esp in FFA cup matches could of been also a strategic move from Popa so that other AL teams don't know what to expect from these players and add a bit of a surprise element.

I think Cejudo and Llorente were still being assessed for fitness. Also, he kept them away from the synthetic pitch.

In all honesty, I reckon the biggest reason Spotless felt soulless was because the football was pretty dire for much of the season. I’ve always thought that any ground will have atmosphere with our fans as long as we’re winning.

It did sound louder than last season....3 or 4k more and the atmosphere will be ok
