It was a new year, but the same old result for the Western Sydney Wanderers, as they earned a 1-1 draw with Perth Glory at the Sydney Olympic Stadium tonight.

The only major surprise in the home teams lineup was the absence through injury of fullback Scott Neville, and he was replaced by utility defender Brendan Hamill. The Wanderers had a good opening 10 minutes, with Dimas Delgado having a wide lash at goal after neat wing play from Nico Martinez. Perth however took the lead after 14 minutes. Josh Risdon, Andy Keogh & Chris Harold combined to send Adam Taggart through on goal. The assistant missed an obvious offside from meters away, but Taggart cared little as he strode in on goal, and took advantage of poor goalkeeping from Jerrad Tyson to beat the keeper at his near post.

Tony Popovic had named a substitute bench including Kearyn Baccus & Jaushua Sotirio, and the pair combined to bring the home team back level in the 65th minute. Baccus picked up the ball near his own penalty area, continued toward halfway unchallenged, before lobbing the ball over a static Perth defence who had been caught square with Josh Risdon keeping Sotirio onside. The speedy winger had been deployed as a forward with the suspension of Brendan Santalab, and Sotirio took inspiration from the Wanderers leading scorer, as he slotted a neat finish past ex-Wanderer Liam Reddy.

Neither side were able to score a goal to provide a precious win, with Western Sydney looking increasingly likely to find themselves breaking the record of 11 draws in an A-League season.

Reports indicated that the Wanderers have Eli Babalj, the twice capped Australian international forward on trial from AZ Alkmaar of Holland and Tony Popovic may add him to a squad which is already set to include Terry Antonis & Vedran Janjetovic.

Nico is sublime, my god he's good.

Hamill isn't but it's ok because he doesn't get much game time.

Sotirio wow, that's how you begin to climb the mountain of expectation lol good on him.

The crowd figure was rubbish but I get it, it's not home.

Lastly, that was one of the craziest nights in the RBB ever, I'd love to hear some feedback from people who were seated elsewhere on the noise level because in the middle it was damn loud.

In terms of the game, we play too narrow. So many times we could have exploited the wings but with Clisby, and especially Hamill, we were just ineffective. No one trusted Hamill, and it's not hard to see why. He was awful tonight.

Decent roll up given the circumstances.

Not sure how it sounded around the rest of the ground but rbb under the roof sounded great. Was very sweaty though....

Tonight showed how valuable Neville is - without him we hugely lacked width and pace - allowed Perth to just pack bodies around the edge of the box and make it very hard to break down.

The one time we actually go direct, we score. Might be something in that....

The RBB sounded great for the side...TBH I didn't hear the WST today not sure if they were there.

I think we need a new captain. If Bridge comes back , give it to him .

Watching him attempt to answer a few simple questions in a pre-game interview, I had to wonder how effectively he is able to communicate with his team mates, or the coach. It was excruciating.

The only time he looked comfortable and communicated what he intended to, was when the interviewer thanked him at the end of the interview, and Dimas smiled in relief that it was over. I felt sorry for him, but wondered how easily he is able to fulfill the captain's role.

Added to this, he doesn't strike me as a motivator or a leader.  I think his game is suffering because of the responsibility of the captaincy.

No more giving **** to Sotirio ;)

Even a broken clock is right twice a day heheh

Nah seriously, if Sotirio is our saviour, we're in real trouble. Perth were woeful. Sydney and Victory would of put 4 passed them tonight. Our squad quality only put 1 and OMG Tyson, way to prove to everyone why we stooped to have to sign Janjetovic.

If Antonis and Babajl we're fit, I'd get excited for the rest of the season. Reality, with more of these signings it'll look good for next season.... IF WE KEEP the Nicos, Nichols and Clisbys.

Also puts an end to the no Serb signings too lol

I have been a fan of Eli Babalj's for a while. Gun player on his day. Just too injury prone. If he can get his body right he can make a good impact this year and an even bigger one next year.

How about my boy Sotirio :woah:

Surely that goal from Perth was not Tyson's fault. It was a one on one ffs. Just because it was near post doesn't mean it should be an automatic save. A bit harsh Mack.

One v One? I'm not sure that matters unless he was coming from a more central location.

Sorry bro, goal keeping 101. When an attacker comes in from an angle, you always protect your near post and force the attacker to score in the far corner. It looked like he pre-emptively moved to cover the far post but was helpless when the shot was directed at the near post.

Was it all Tyson's fault? The build up to the goal from Perth was all too easy, Clisby was trying to hold the line whilst Taggart made the perfect run & Tyson played a key part in the goal. To blame Tyson is harsh but that is the cut throat nature of sport. The amount of times a good goalkeeper saves a team & is the difference between winning games or not is often in that moment.

Obviously the defence failed to stop the passing & through ball.

It would have been an automatic save if Tyson had stood up at the near post like every goalkeeper is taught to do from a young age. Don't predict shots, because this is what happens. Instead of maybe getting beaten at the far post (which would have been an impressive shot) he predicted a shot, moved slightly, and that was all it took for Taggart to smack it past his left hand at the near post.

Same thing with the Dimas goal against Theo. Theo setup his wall, but didn't trust it. He moved to predict a shot against what you are trained as a goalkeeper to do (if it goes over wall then tough luck, blame the defence for giving away the foul in the first place), and then Dimas put the ball where he wasn't anymore.

that is completely ****ed, so called wanderers fans stealing from their own is disgusting

I looked around for the WST and couldn't see them either.

they didnt bother to make a noise all match, i dont know what the **** they do, the cove is more impressive

Perth is a defensive side.... what do you do when they have 11 people behind the ball?

Well according to the players we batter ram through the middle because a wingers don't exist. We need more width in our attacks and quicker play on counters

there was some actual impressive moments where we tried to ram through and got through many defenders, i guess popa figures if you ram enough eventually something good will happen but it would have been nice if we had another strategy :P

Just like the goal against Roar last week, Tyson dived the wrong way.

1st rule of goalkeeping is you don't get beaten on your near post, you make the striker earn the goal.

As a keeper, I've done what Tyson did many times, it looked obvious to me. He predicted the shot and lost, not a good look.

i like Tyson a lot and yes it was one on one but i agree with this

I was in the stands last night (instead of the Bloc), and you guys sounded AMAZING up in that back tier.

The comments from people around me all indicated it's the first time at ANZ we've had any sort of atmosphere.

Our next (and last) match at ANZ is the final derby in Feb. Back tier ftw.

    1. Tyson made 1 error all game and it was the goal. No excuses and he'll know it

    2. The goal was offside anyway, but clisby got caught sleeping in the wrong side of the Taggart

    3. Hammill is no longer able to play aleague. He makes no contribution. If Neville isn't fit, hopefully young Bacchus gets a start. He was very good in the youth team last season and showed his ready to play at this level now.

    4. Dimas missing a week could be a blessing in disguise. Gives Bacchus a chance to start. Let's see if he can take his chance

    5. Nico freak freak freak

    6. Jumpei. Frustrating

    7. Sotirio. Better. Great finish, but still showed he had no idea what he was about to do when he was dribbling. Still, if he scores, and starts scoring everything else is wiped

    8. Scott. Not his fault that he's been thrown in at the deep end by a head case striker amd an ill disciplined striker

    9. Antonis and babalj are good additions but not the final answer to what is an obvirus problem ... GET US A TOP LINE STRIKER

That we finished the game with jumpei at 9 shows what a nightmare this is turning out to be

Same as pretty much every game dominate the ball not enough end product.

The best we look is when Jumpei or Niko go on a dribble and beat a few players but it's all 1 out stuff. The interplay still isn't there.

No idea how people can have a dig at a 19 year told frontmen, he's not meant to carry the load, even Popa said as much in post game.

Borda at least looks better and Perth's goal was a nice goal, credit to them. So glad we didn't concede a **** one for once.

Agree with Mack Tyson made it easy for him.

Next 2 weeks going to be tough. Against city I assume Baccus will start with Dimas out and we should see Antonis off bench.

The interplay was there last time we played the VIC, but that defeat was crushing. The team hasn't quite looked the same since. New blood is urgently needed.

Borda looks like he's finally arrived in the HAL.He is now the player we would have needed three months ago. Oh well.

Antonis gets off the plane on Friday. He won't be on the bench against City.

If all Janjetovic does is avoid the little mistakes which result in goals then he'll be well ahead of both Redders and Tyson. In how many games have these two been costing us?

Scott is not the answer. Not yet anyway. Unless we'll get a proper No 9, someone who can force a game, we won't do anything for the remainder of the season. The wait continues, but that we are talking Babalj is not a good sign though. The thought of the derby without both Santa and a new No 9 is depressing.

Goalkeeping 101, cover your near post.

When we use a quick transition, counter attack or thru balls or success rate is good. When we have a slow build up with a million passes in midfield our sussess rate is miserable.....I cannot believe the coaching staff cannot see that.

    • The guy is a professional footballer, even playing on a different side to his preferred, the concept of defending doesn’t change. He hardly looked like he was giving it a go. I think all too often we can be so lenient on mistakes made by players across the league. Let’s not forget that they are professionals, they get paid (a bloody decent amount) and should have the skillset required to atleast be able to do a job in a different to preferred position. It’s not like all age, where one week they are banging then in as a striker and then next they’ve got the gloves on as the regular keeper is away with the missus.
