  • Stop, Hamill Time!

    mack

A storming second half from the Western Sydney Wanderers that included a brace from central defender Brendan Hamill has seen them cement a spot in the top 6 with a 4-1 win over last place Wellington Phoenix.

After 40 minutes of sheer boredom, Brendon Santalab combined with Mark Bridge to open the score. Eschewing the usual "play out from the back" tactics the right fullback Josh Risdon fired a long diagonal ball over the top of the high Wellington defence for the run of Mark Bridge. After weaving his magic inside the penalty area, he laid the ball across for Brendon Santalab who was starting the game after Riera pulled out with an injury. From a few meters out it would have been harder to miss than score and Santalab made no mistake.

Before the celebrations had died down the visiting side were back level. A free kick from a long way out resulted in a game of pinball, Roy Krishna had a shot saved by Vedran Janjetovic only for it to fall to Sarpeet Singh who hammered it into the roof of the net.

With half an hour to play the Wanderers hit the lead from a set piece. Alvaro Cejudo whipped an inswinging corner to the near post, and Brendan Hamill rose to head the ball into the back of the net, making it 2-1.

The 78th minute saw Brendan Hamill claim a rare brace, as the Wanderers once again scored from a corner. This time Cejudo's cross to the near post was flicked on by Mark Bridge and the Wellington defence left Hamill all alone to finish neatly past Tando Velaphi.

With minutes to play they killed the game off with their fourth goal. After some combination play in the backline betwen Roly Bonevacia and Josh Risdon who burst through the Wellington defence, he beat Tando Velaphi to his touch over the top and cut it sideways with Chris Ikonomidis twinkletoes taking the ball around the covering Wellington defenders and tapping it into the empty net.

The win puts the Wanderers into 5th position on the table, 1 ahead of Adelaide United and 5 in front of Brisbane with both those sides having a game in hand. The Wanderers now have a Melbourne double in Rounds 24 & 25 before finishing up the regular season against the Roar and Adelaide at home.

My post in the match thread:

"Ante Milicic was sitting a few rows in front of me first half. I told him to go down and give Gombau a hand but I don't think he heard me.

Although he made a phone call at half time and then left the stand. "

You can all thank me later

Bridge summed up the game for me in the post match interview. We were average 1st half and second half the Nix got tired we will need to be better when we come up against the Melbourne teams. Happy for the win only sooo many games left before finals

Gombau wins silverware in his first WSW season.

Never undervalue the Sister City Shield :P

They won the pre-game face off with the Haka though.

Although ours was almost as good. 👍

Mack is correct the first half was dire

Defensively Hamil had a horror game but after those two goals it seemed like a different player. Confidence? Nix horrible?

First half, Nix spent lots of energy pressing & playing at a high intensity. We were continuing what we were doing last week, it was looking bad, really really bad.

After the break, we looked okay but I think it came down to Nix being pathetic rather than us being so much better.

Anyone know what the Hamil celebration was? Also, hamil time?

The Nix are New Zealand Knights level bad.

Our players were.SCARED...especially scared to shoot in the first half.

We just so desperately lacked confidence.

Lets hope those goals endow them with a bit of confidence going forward....even if they were scored against the Nix.

No-one will ever be NZ Knights level bad.

NZK A-League Season 2 bad: Sure.

But NZK A-League Season 1... they only won a single game.

To be fair i thought hammil ok in defense especially in the first half.

Im still not seeing the gombau game plan working though he we will get some credit for this but not sure its down to him that we score from a quick break and have central defenders scoring a brace.

    Still a wins a win i guess

A game of 2 halves, first was very dull, game sort of woken up with 2 goals towards the end of the 1st half but there was only 1 shot at goal for 38 minutes.

2nd half we looked more lively, taking our chances a lot more, it's not often you see one of our players score 2 goals a game let alone Hamil!

Seriously, NRL fans need their heads bashed in for going to watch the wrong sport! A few of the guys from RBB and WST were pretty close to beating a few them up at Lidcombe station.

    Wins a win.

Wouldn’t look too much into this as Wellington are an absolute shambles.

It’s still going’s to be backs against the wall as soon as we’re in Melbourne.

Don’t be fooled. We’re still dogshit and will struggle against half decent opposition.

I had to laugh though as soon as active started up again the goals started flowing. Coincidence ? Hmmm. Maybe not.
