  • Strikers Fire In Brisbane

    mack

A great team wide performance was the catalyst for a clinical Western Sydney Wanderers to take home all 3 points with a 2-0 win in Brisbane tonight.

The 2-0 win sees the Wanderers jump into the top 6 pending the rest of the round, with a game in hand & some winnable fixtures coming up they might be on pace to make a tilt at the top 4. With injuries, suspensions, player departures & youth national team call ups, Josep Gombau elected to play a 4-4-1-1 formation with Riera & Santalab up top with Lustica & Bridge on the wings, Kearyn Baccus & Chris Herd central with Raul Llorente filling in for Josh Risdon at right back with Clisby at left fullback, and the experienced central defensive combination of Thwaite & Cornthwaite screening for Janjetovic in goal.

Brisbane Roar had the better of the early stages, but their ineffective attack and inability to stay onside cost them any hope of making inroads into the scoreline. Corey Gamiero was perhaps unlucky to have been called offside just before the Wanderers opened the scoring but with the Roar racking up a total of 6 in the game it would be hard to blame the linesman if he got the tight decision wrong.

For their part the Wanderers stayed compact and rose into the game, their passing improving with Oriol Riera the standout with his back to goal play. The marquee striker began the move that saw him become the beneficiary of great work by Steven Lustica & Brendon Santalab. Lustica with the ball wide open on the right flank he hit a pinpoint cross into the 6 yard box. Santalab's diving header was on target and a wonderful save from Jamie Young happened to fall in the path of Riera and he couldn't miss from point blank range.

Brisbane tried to strike back through Corey Gamiero, who managed to keep himself onside in the 34th minute as he latched onto a long ball over the top of the Wanderers defence. As Thwaite & Llorente tried in vain to catch up, his shot was fired in from the edge of the 18 yard box but Vedran Janjetovic stuck out a left hand and held the ball to his chest.

Mark Bridge's selection saw him rise to the most capped player in Wanderers history and he celebrated with a goal before half-time. Once again Riera was the creator, picking up the ball on the edge of the area before finding Bridge with a penetrating ball into box that Bridge took a touch to get around Daniel Bowles before firing it past Young at the near post.

The second half saw the Wanderers turn the screws on the home side and they had multiple chances to go further ahead. Riera found himself in open space at a free kick with a free header he could only put wide of the post. Lachlan Scott came on to play wide and combined with Riera & Santalab well. His best chance was late in the game with a fierce shot from a tight angle that couldn't beat Young.

For yet another game the VAR system appeared to fail at it's task of finding major errors. After some pinball at a corner, Massimo Maccarone lined up Brendon Santalab, ignoring the ball completely then cut open Santalab with a nasty elbow. Despite the video replay showing the incident clearly deserved a penalty and a red card, the VAR astonishingly declined to intervene. The attack didn't even result in a yellow card for Maccarone. If the shoe was on the other foot and it was Santalab who had cut open an opposing player I have no doubt at all that he would have been walking off the field & receive a long ban.

The Wanderers closed out the game well and kept the Roar from any major opportunities the win seeing them leap into the top 6 for now, with a game against Adelaide United coming up on Wednesday they might be looking to push into the top 4.

That's what I'd heard tonight, but found hard to believe!

How utterly absurd not to have ironed out "how, who and what instigates a review" :nono:  :nono:

    Thanks Hughsey!  :good:

PS  Since when is there any sort of guarantee that merely because the ref is standing 10 metres away and staring at an incident that the incident will be treated the right way??  :nea:

Evans might need to go to Spec Savers. He also watched the Bobo rack in the game against Heartless

Herd needs to smarten up and just play football, his aggression is a bit to much and needs spoken to, but happy to see him start and hopefully play every week.

Oreo showed his class and should not of been doubted. Bridge was good and Santa as well.

The var is a joke and needs to be fixed, seriously how could they not look at it with Santa bleeding with a break in play.

Still wasn't a quality performance especially the first half, but a couple of goals might turn things around and bring in some much need confidence.

Hopefully Gombau can bring in a creative winger or true 10 to give more service to Oreo and make a real run for the finals.

I think that is why he was willing to say "sayonara" toJumpei. Didn't have the quality finishing required.

Couple of things re. the VAR

The VAR ref decides to check incidents independently

The Santa clash was not checked by VAR. The VAR ref didn't deem it a significant error

Macaronne can be reviewed by the panel and given a retrospective ban as dealing with it on the field means getting a yellow or red and the ref did neither

The Roar had too many shots on goal for my liking, but they are always a handful, and difficult to play in these humid Brisbane nights.

    Maccarone - WTF?

Gombau and the experienced players seem to have found common ground. Four above 30 players starting at the back, three up front, with three "youngsters" running midfield - it worked well. Clisby seemed the weak link, especially first half.

Good to see Gameiro back on the pitch. How many ACLs has he had? Two? Three? Good to see him losing in a game against the wsw.

JayZKo's favourite player scored another goal, had an assist, and worked his arse off for 95 mins. I hope he stays injury free and keeps producing this kind of football.

So nice to lose the possession stats in first half and yet go into the sheds 2-0 up.....Looking forward to statues of Santa and Bridge and The Snake at Parra Mk. 2. The Passionate Trio!! Kudos to the travelling grubs on tour in the away bay. Sure not the greatest display with defensive issues and giving the ball away too easily but great to see the fight and emotion back.

Just watched the replay again and everyone agrees that Maccarone should have had a straight red for the elbow on Santa. On the 85th min he got a yellow for a foul on Clisby.i would say even that was borderline straight red. No intention to play the ball and had a lunge at Clisby.

He was clearly best on field. We couldn’t complain if drew or lost that game we were not that great

the first goal he strategically position himself away from the play awaiting any spillage and mopped it up

his ball for bridge on the 2nd - all class

hes general play was great again

like u said jayzko for some reason is anti Reira with little reason why

Reira doesn’t play last night we don’t get the points - probably same against city

with hopefully a quality import to come signs are good

solid away support and noise last night well down all

Very happy with the win. A good effort by all of the team.

Only one security guard annoyed WSW fans telling people to stop leaning on the fence. All other staff were fine.

Since most people in the away bay were not RBB members, we took breaks between chants to cope with the humidity. This prompted a "Who Are Ya" chant from the Den ... when they were already 2-0 down :unknw:

My first win from 8 interstate trips (3rd Roar trip).

The Den should really learn to stfu against us. They just continue to embarrass themselves.

Btw on the broadcast, couldn't even hear them. They are a shadow of their former selves, which wasn't that great to begin with.

Gameiro has done his ACL(s) 3 times. Twice on one knee and once on the other.

BTW, if you decide to drop your team colours for stupid NRL State of Origin maroon jerseys, you deserve to lose 2:0 in front of your own fans!!!

Apparently the maroon jersey is one of their most popular and best sellers every year (parochial Queenslanders).

Great to see a (relatively) solid performance, another win (in a row!) and cleansheet. Hoping we can build some momentum and continue to accumulate points. I did not expect Santa to last the full game, and wonder if he and some of the others can back it up on Wednesday. If not, very curious which youngsters will get their chance.

I was pleased to see the team play with passion and cohesion, maybe the "motivational" talk from the RBB has had an impact?

Despite Mack stating the formation as 4-4-1-1, multiple websites (including the A-League) stating we had a 4-2-3-1 formation.  All the players are familar with it so better result which is weird the men's team are now in outright 6th due to Adelaide's win.

And we play Adelaide at ANZ on Wednesday night. The have Absalonsen back but may have lost Adlung. We will be without Herd but get Roly back. We have Santalab and Cornthwaite on 4 yellows as well.

Gombau said in the press conference it was a 4-4-2 then a 4-2-4 late in the game with the pressing high and subbing on Scott.

On the way home, having lunch at Grafton.

What a top night! Linked up with Pseuds and dmix and Tristan from many years ago, and met and chatted with other Wanderers.

Sang loud and proud, got a win, overdid the "refreshments".

    Woohoo!

And helped the problem secco repeatedly by pointing out all the people bresking his rules in adjacent bays. But he didn't seem to understand!

Grinding results in true WSW fashion.

ATM we’re decent against lesser opponents.

Any top side would have punished us given the amount of space and time on the ball.

The constant turnovers also are a huge worry.

Adelaide are going to be very difficult.

Lachlan Scott may be a better right winger than a centre forward  :)

Any news on Cejudo and Risdon injuries  ??

Just landed in Sydney airport and looking forward to celebrating the win with a milk carton full of alcohol that's how we do it at Grêmio and plus want to say thank you for your support for my passing of papa thx BTW here is a little chant that really sets the mood dale dale wandereerers:xbop:

Well.... that goes to show that even at a less than perfect venue for watching football  (like at ANZ and Spotless) - and a long way from the pitch, noise, energy and passion CAN certainly be generated.  :good:

Scott really took me by surprise. Has always been largely uninspiring and off the pace up front, but looked much more comfortable on the wing!

be interested to see how he goes in a few more matches when needed.

I think someone mentioned it above.

but the commentry was aluding to the fact that the VAR did not check it as they sid not deem in a clear and big enough error from the ref.

so this is now how they are operating ever since our mariners clash.

Now i understand the concept and this is the right idea, but it just shows there has to be a few rules for different scenarios in place.

    ie:

    - only check if it is deemed to be a clear and big ref error during normal play.

    - During the stopping of play due to a head or potential foul play injury off the ball, Use the farking time to check what happened with VAR!

On Herd - yep i thought he might cost us the lead for a while there. Was relieved when he was subbed. He's a good player but you need to aim to win the ball at least some of the time, rather taking the player out.

Re a creative winger. Not his usual position but I thought Lachie Scott was outstanding when he came on, playing down the right. I really would have liked to have seen more of him in that role as opposed to an out and out striker. (Idk positioning that well so i may have got this wrong)

I read that the VAR ref doesn't pull up on any decisions made if the on-field referee is his mate

I think that article had a stat about how many times decisions were changed if it was a "newer" A-League referee (like Elder or Alms, whatever the names are) rather than the old firm like Evans, KGJ, Beath, etc.

    • Best shown by a chance Toure had when an Indonesian player had fallen over, he had a simple ball about 10 meters that would have put one of our attackers clean through for a one on one. He over-hit it and ruined the chance. Also falling for the same old Asian team diving & time wasting, by giving away stupid fouls to let them fall over and sit on the ground for minutes. 11 minutes stoppage time is probably half what it deserved.
    • Yet again, a failure of pace and power football over technically skilled football in on display in the Olyroos vs Indonesia.  We need to develop skills over pace at all levels
    • Milanovic & Brook should have been on the next flight home at half-time.
