  • Tale Of Two Penalties In Auckland

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers threw away a win against Wellington after Dimas Delgado missed a penalty that should have won the game for the Wanderers.

Tony Popovic elected to make several changes from last week, in particular putting Jerrad Tyson back in goal after his red card suspension, and introducing Jaushua Sotirio & Kearyn Baccus into the starting lineup.

The opening 15 minutes did not match the rest of the season, as the Wanderers were dominated and barely had a touch on the ball. However, the visitors took an unexpected lead through Brendon Santalab. From a corner, Santalab got horizontal to smash a volley into the bottom right corner of the Wellington goal.

The 55th minute saw the Wanderers double their advantage in the blink of an eye. Mitch Nichols scoring his first goal in the A-League, finishing off a well worked move down the left flank.

Unfortunately the match fell apart for Western Sydney from this moment on. Less than 10 minutes later they had conceded a penalty. Sotirio stuck in a boot on Roy Krishna, and he was adjudged to have fouled the winger in the box. Gui Finkler stepped up from the spot & stroked it home to make the score 2-1.

After conceding a penalty, Sotirio then won another in the Wellington box. Captain Dimas strode to the spot, but his penalty was atrocious, a weak effort aimed straight at where any keeper on the planet would be diving if they picked the wrong way. Glen Moss snaffled the ball while Dimas looked forlornly as he trundled back in position.

Wellington made the Wanderers pay immediately, with Parkhouse delivering on his left foot a cross that saw Krishna beat the 5 defenders in the vicinity, climbing over Jack Clisby and burying a header at the far post.

Both teams had their chances to take all three points, but neither could summon that one last key chance. Both teams remain outside the top 6, and for Tony Popovic the pressure must surely be mounting, with just 2 wins from 11 games.

I will go so far as to say that failure to win against the Brisbane Roar next week should put Popovic's job in jeopardy. This string of "close but not good enough" results cannot be allowed to continue without any change. If Popovic is unwilling to make the changes to the squad or tactics, then it is ownership of the team, who have presided over several years of cheap recruitment who must front up to the fans and explain why they refuse to invest in the squad despite making millions off the move to the Olympic precinct.

The Dimas penalty was very poor. If he kicked in the corner and Moss made an unbelievable save you say fair enough. When a player puts his hand up (as you could see when asked by Santa) then no excuse for that. If we wasn't confident he should have let someone else take it.

We are just dumb and play some dumb football at times.

And seriously, does the gaffa have a say in who takes the spot kicks, because Dimas should NEVER take one again. No corners. No free kicks. Nothing.

Anyone think that Nico wouldn't have nailed that?

    Didn't think so.

That was the poorest penalty ever. We go 3-1 up and we do not drop 2 points.

    ******* embarrassing.

Couldn't agree more. Why aren't we utilising our best on-the-ball player? Particularly for corners. He hasn't got the height to be in the scrum of bodies in the box, he could kick it in, then get into position to receive any scraps - and set something up.

First half was perfectly summed up by Adam Peacock by a Seinfeld reference when George figures out every decision he has made in his life thus far is wrong so decides to do the opposite of every decision he made in the past  Perfect!

In all fairness, before that first goal we looked bad. Much better after the first goal & perfect up to the Sotirio penalty. At that point in went all down hill.

    The bad:

    - The first 30 minutes we forgot how to football

    - Sotirio did bad for pen leading to first goal but earned a penalty at the other end

    - Dimas missed pen, would gave changed the game at 1-2

    - Some interesting decisions by the referee, some went against us & some went our way. I think it equaled itself out.

    - Unforgivable to give away a two goal lead but that second goal conceded was the worst than the mistake by Sotirio.

Baccus & Sotirio had poor starts but I thought they worked much better into the game. In all honesty thought that Jumpei & Bruno haven't been anything special lately, much prefer giving the youngsters a go rather than these two which don't bring much final product.

Why did Dimas take the pen? Would have been decided pre-match, obviously a pecking order decided on the training field or change rooms

Strongly disagree with Bozza & Rudan pre-game. The answer to us not clicking with the final piece is to go back to hoof ball in season 1 despite not having the players to pull it off? Ridiculous. I think that Popa needs to adapt but he persists (and I thought I was a stubborn bastard). They did say that Popa needs to take accountability either publicly or privately that he got things wrong & needs to come out to say this. I think the perfect response was Marron's post in the match day thread, spot on :good:

This week I was happy with the way we defended well in the second half but losing those two goals opened the game up which is what we need to avoid. At 0-1 we looked so good, held our shape nicely even looked good up to the second goal but after that penalty it all went to ****. At 2-2 we needed to open up to win the game & nearly lost it.

Is the season over? We will not be challenging for the championship but popa needs to make sure that the boys start firing for the run in to the post season cup & ACL. I'd rather us come into form sooner rather than later, but our season has not been decided yet & all is not lost. Hate to look at Twitter right now

It's not rocket science. I don't understand why our coaching staff cannot see this.

I mentioned the other day about how we have a bad record when we score first. Proven right again today. These days I would rather the opposition scores first. We are a team who panics, procrastinates and fumbles around when we have a lead to to protect. No game plan whatsoever to choke the opposition out of the game when we take a lead.

Nichols no foul on the edge of the box?

Scott no foul shortly after leading to the Dimas no foul and subsequent free kick to Wellington.

    Bloody mind boggling.

Having said that. We should have won that. SMH

There were two handballs missed against us, I don't think we can complain about getting calls

To the two examples you listed above, also handball by Barbarouses leading to second goal was missed. As I mentioned in my post, it equaled its way out but I wouldn't say it was a great game by the referee. The only good thing about the refereeing was that the game wasn't decided by a bad refereeing call (like the winning offside goal by Newcastle last night )

Why the fuuck doesn't Santa take the pens? He has more power than Dimas ffs

Anyone would take a better pen than that.

    Even my 14 y.o.

    FMD!!!!

I feel sorry for those that travelled to Auckland. They should feel ripped off after that effort.

A game we should have won, and given some travelling supporters some joy.

To be honest penalties can go anyway. Dimas got one earlier in the year so he was confident. People acting like Nico would have slotted it 100%. There is never a definite when it comes to a penalty. You just have to hope the right person has stepped up in the moment. Dimas probably won't be taking the next one.

The positive was it was a pretty lively game end to end

But yeah **** me this is season 3 all over I really can't see it changing

We are incapable of defending soundly for 90 mins

**** me what a stupid pen to give away from sotorio

It's what ten games in now and we have Won 2 games one with a lucky last min goal and the other against mariners

in our defense so far we are not last like we were for most of season 3 but still a **** season

Nico hits the ball cleanly but we have no idea how well he takes pens. Penalties are more about mentality and composure rather than just pure ability to strike a football. He tends to snatch at chances in games so who knows how he would go.

We had some good moments. I don't want to forget that. Some positive movement forward, some nice link ups coming into the oppositions box and dare I say, a bit faster on the break...... BUT, our bad moments cost us games. There's no room for those amount of errors in this comp.

    I'm getting sick of draws.

The 1 pointers are killing us, particularly when we are consistently the better team but can't get the 3.

No one has mentioned this but Tyson should have saved the Krishna's header.. If it was Redders everyone would be over him.

Out of all the goals Tyson conceded so far, that was the one he should have done a better job of. That was easily saveable.

i agree he should have done better i am still confident with him because he seems to improve our defense but he has made 2 mistakes for us that i remember

About the 4th or 5th time Sotirio has ever contributed to the side and Dimas ruins it.

lol it was a historic moment for Sotirio but sadly that was a terrible pen

    • When did we hit it to a winger and cross? We played it backwards and sideways anywhere but forward on the few occasions we did get the ball forward Sotirio ran it out for a goal kick. Younis changed the game as he actually can play football
    • Ninkovic was a game changer  We let City have the midfield and I’ve seen that sort of structure before with the Matilda’s. Basically just stack the front line and then hit it to a winger to cross. It works if you have players like Catley, Foord, Fowler, Kerr, etc. Doesn’t work too well with our players. once Ninkovic came on and we actually played it through the middle, we got a lot more dangerous
    • Why? We don’t need any midfield we just lob it over the top from the back.
