  • Tale Of Two Penalties In Auckland

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers threw away a win against Wellington after Dimas Delgado missed a penalty that should have won the game for the Wanderers.

Tony Popovic elected to make several changes from last week, in particular putting Jerrad Tyson back in goal after his red card suspension, and introducing Jaushua Sotirio & Kearyn Baccus into the starting lineup.

The opening 15 minutes did not match the rest of the season, as the Wanderers were dominated and barely had a touch on the ball. However, the visitors took an unexpected lead through Brendon Santalab. From a corner, Santalab got horizontal to smash a volley into the bottom right corner of the Wellington goal.

The 55th minute saw the Wanderers double their advantage in the blink of an eye. Mitch Nichols scoring his first goal in the A-League, finishing off a well worked move down the left flank.

Unfortunately the match fell apart for Western Sydney from this moment on. Less than 10 minutes later they had conceded a penalty. Sotirio stuck in a boot on Roy Krishna, and he was adjudged to have fouled the winger in the box. Gui Finkler stepped up from the spot & stroked it home to make the score 2-1.

After conceding a penalty, Sotirio then won another in the Wellington box. Captain Dimas strode to the spot, but his penalty was atrocious, a weak effort aimed straight at where any keeper on the planet would be diving if they picked the wrong way. Glen Moss snaffled the ball while Dimas looked forlornly as he trundled back in position.

Wellington made the Wanderers pay immediately, with Parkhouse delivering on his left foot a cross that saw Krishna beat the 5 defenders in the vicinity, climbing over Jack Clisby and burying a header at the far post.

Both teams had their chances to take all three points, but neither could summon that one last key chance. Both teams remain outside the top 6, and for Tony Popovic the pressure must surely be mounting, with just 2 wins from 11 games.

I will go so far as to say that failure to win against the Brisbane Roar next week should put Popovic's job in jeopardy. This string of "close but not good enough" results cannot be allowed to continue without any change. If Popovic is unwilling to make the changes to the squad or tactics, then it is ownership of the team, who have presided over several years of cheap recruitment who must front up to the fans and explain why they refuse to invest in the squad despite making millions off the move to the Olympic precinct.

No one has mentioned this but Tyson should have saved the Krishna's header.. If it was Redders everyone would be over him.

Out of all the goals Tyson conceded so far, that was the one he should have done a better job of. That was easily saveable.

Its Redmayne's fault....If he was better he would have been playing and would have saved that.

Tyson has to be given some time to prove himself like Redmayne was given. If he keeps making minor errors which lead to goals, then he will go the same way Redmayne has gone. We will be searching for a new keeper.

In all honesty he had a nervy one in the opener when he came for a corner & completely missed it, lucky the header flashed wide. Apart from that he had a solid game, his first one in three. I saw someone put some blame on him for the second, but questions needs to be asked how tiny little Krishina dominated Clisby in the air to put away a good header, nothing to do with Tyson. Neither was the penalty.

I suspect that no matter what happens in the next few weeks, Redmaybe will leave, Tyson will move to number 2 & a new number 1 will come in.

Maybe there are some Redmayne fans who will be looking to pin anything on Tyson. They are probably missing the point. Redmayne was just a massive liability in the end.

Sotirio brings little to justify a starting berth

We could have done with #legend in the opposing penalty area. Obviously Bulut was deemed the better option

Our bench is impotent. Resting two important players and having two glaring weaknesses on the park is not viable.

Scott has been ineffective. Given his size he is out muscled easily and his positioning is worse than Bulut. Whatever has gone down in that department (Pio mark 2 ?) hurts us.

The Scott and Pio comparison is justifiable.

Beyond Juric, our best ever striker was the big bald unit from season 1, and he hardly scored a goal. But at least he caused opposition defences some trouble and opened up the play for our wingers and midfielders. He worked hard. Scott is a lazy **** and Bulut is a clueless ****.

    Santa is a worker.

This was the same bullshit that happened against esfc a few seasons back in the derby.... well on top get a pen.. chance to go 2-0 up...bridge that time stuffed it and well the rest was history after cruising the game. Niko or santalab should have taken the penalty end of story. Our squad is the way it is due to it being ripped apart and the perfomances show.

Can't believe that we are condemning a 19 year old kid from our youth team after one start and a few bench appearances.

I ordinarily would agree with that comment. but I saw Nicholls really giving it to Scott in an earlier game this season for not chasing the ball and putting just a little bit of pressure on the defence.

Since then, I've watched him closely and Nicholls was well within his means to do so.

I've seen nothing since that has changed that view.

If this kid wants to make it in the big time, he needs to work harder. And, ffs, he's 19. He should have more energy than anyone else on the park!!

This. Our fanbase is losing the plot. Blame the recruitment and decisions that puts the kid in that position of responsibility in the first place.
The issue is that we were hoping that we were going to be getting the first version of Bulut but we didn't get it. Throw in off field & training ground issues means that we are relying on a 34 year old as our main striker & a young 19 year old to come off the bench as if he was a seasoned pro.

That is poor recruitment and team planning. All self inflicted.

There are teenagers and young NPL promotees who look more the part than Scott at this stage. My criticism of his ineffectiveness is more a go at Popa than Scott.

Our system makes life hard for strikers. Always has. The talent required to consistently score, hold the ball up, provide assists and score off set pieces all on your lonesome costs big bucks and should be a marquee spot. Even if we flopped it last year.

The positive was it was a pretty lively game end to end

But yeah **** me this is season 3 all over I really can't see it changing

We are incapable of defending soundly for 90 mins

**** me what a stupid pen to give away from sotorio

It's what ten games in now and we have Won 2 games one with a lucky last min goal and the other against mariners

**** me this is nowhere near as bad as season 3. In season 3 we could hardly string  3 passes together and never looked like making the top 6. Granted we are never going to emulate seasons 1,2 and 4 this year but we're well capable of 5th/6th and a chance in the end of season KO.

Just a big shout out to those that went to Auckland in the full knowledge that we are shite..know Wendy and Megan were among them, great effort and hope you have a great time.

I was hoping the camera might show the WSW.

Yeah. but in season 3 we were living on the after glow of the ACL win, everyone was talking about how they would accept a shite season in exchange for that. That is now over the horizon and long gone and well... we are 3 years or so without a derby win, in a shite home ground area and well.....it is just a bit shite lol

But at least we are getting a new stadium..... yay....

He should never lace on another boot again he is that much of a waste of space

Popovic has taken the club as far as he can, we have a chance to grab Ernie Merrick and could possibly even get Gombau.

Should have won that one - its bullshit we let that one go...if you take a penalty you ******* put your boot through it...or let Santa take it

I'm still with Popa, but if we had to get someone I'd try to get KL...and he can bring Keogh with him...

An accurate but nonetheless pretty depressing assessment, especially given the coaching staff's assurances pre-season that they had assembled a more technically capable squad. On paper and from the get go we've looked like an "on the cheap", scratchy squad.... a significant, under performing number of whom will still be with us next season. This game was a typical bottom half of the table, error prone shambles. Phoenix were practically begging to be beaten and we still couldn't do the job on them.

I still have faith that we can turn it around make the six and get it together at the end of the season when it counts, acl is also doable just need to pick up a striker asap.

For some strange reason, I do too. But maybe that is more hope than fact.

Right. Bringing Bulut back was poor recruitment? Redmayne yes, Bulut no.

How could anyone predict that this would have happened to Bulut? Popa has a special relationship with Bulut & had a fantastic spell with us last time. Is it poor recruitment that things haven't worked out with him?

Team planning too? He had his mid 20's main striker, 34 year old sub & a young kid to fill the gaps. What if he signed a fourth striker, would we all then be complaining that he wasted a spot that could have been used on a box to box midfielder we desperately need?
