  • Wanderers Outgunned By Arsenal

    mack

The Wanderers first major pre-season circus event ended with a dominant Arsenal scoring 3 goals against an spirited but outclassed Wanderers team at Homebush tonight.

Western Sydney managed to get through half an hour without punishment. On 15th minutes Steven Lustica had a chance to play through Jumpei on goal but his killer ball was blocked by an Arsenal defender. Jacob Melling was involved in set to with Xhaka & Olivier Giroud's fancy haircut, but despite the Wanderers winning a foul it seemed to fire up the Arsenal team and they took revenge shortly. After half an hour Arsenal opened the scoring, with Monreal breaking down the left wing, playing a one-two with new Arsenal signing Lacazette, who cut back the ball to Giroud to finish with a neat pass from close range.

The Wanderers defence was caught square just 5 minutes later, as the Arsenal defence smashed a long ball over the top of Brendan Hamill, he was left in the dust by Aaron Ramsey, and his chip left Vedran Janjetovic with no hope at all of making a save.

Right before half-time it was 3-0 with Mohamed Elneny striking from long distance and being helped by a deflection off Hamill.

The Wanderers came out with renewed spirit in the second half, and took the game to Arsenal. They were rewarded in the 56th minute.  Following some intense presure in the box, Jack Clisby fired in one of his trademark "shoot at hit the crossbar" strikes from outside the area, Arsenal failed to clear the ball, and were pinged for an intentional backpass to the goalkeeper. With the Arsenal team camped on the goal line, Lustica fired, hit the wall, then pounced on the rebound to shoot the ball into the roof of the net for a 3-1 scoreline.

Arsenal looked nearly certain to score a fourth, but they were held at bay with the help of the woodwork and scrambling defence from the Wanderers.

The 3-1 scoreline reflected the ebb & flow of the game well enough. Roly Bonevacia did well, particularly in the second half, and new marquee striker Oriol Riera did well enough with his limited game time. Unfortunately, neither Brendan Hamill or Jumpei Kusukami made any positive impact for the Wanderers, Hamill being part of all three Arsenal goals, and Jumpei rotating between invisibility, and being monstered off the ball by his midfield markers.

At the end of the day these matches are less about winning & losing than they are about helping to gain match fitness and regularity with the tactics involved, and on the whole it appears for the Wanderers they achieved what would have been expected of them. The pre-season will continue as we all head towards the FFA Cup and the opening rounds of the A-League.

I could post a real epic about the entire Arsenal in Sydney wankfest, but will focus on last night's match experience and what I saw from the real home team.

First off, it was good to meet up with FCB, Braad, Stringer & some associates at the Concord pre-match. It really is the only decent venue for pre-SOP meet ups that is within a short walk of the venues. There was a decent crowd in, with a few EuroSnobs, some other WSW hools, a couple of Swans hangers on and even a Manuka Midget. Those of us who have been there know that the food is good and the beer cold.

    what is this magical place

Getting into ANZ was surprisingly stress free. The seccos were their usual monosyllabic grunting best, but didn't feel too hassled heading in with Stringer. A slightly muted 'Arbeit macht frei' was issued as walked into stadium, then it was to the active section.

Generally speaking the WSW active end was filled with plenty of Wanderers folk, and the aisle next to mine was where the RBB took up residence. There were some hassles apparently for La Banda, but as people may have heard and/or seen they did get to play. There was a sprinkling of Gunners fans there and to be honest they should've fooked off...they sat there like atmosphere sponges sucking up any passion unless one of their overpaid heroes scored, then they were yelling and screaming like they'd sat on a thumb tack.

The opening silence from the RBB was powerful, in that it reminded all of us who love game day with them how ordinary things can be without them. Whether or not you agree or disagree with all or some of the things that have happened, game day experiences and being a WSW supporter is embellished by the RBB, and their absence will diminish us all.

In the first half I thought that our defence was pretty solid, and it was good to see the likes of Clisby and Hamill get physical. Snakes did bloody well in front of goal, and it says a bit about how Arsenal struggled to score as freely as their numpty fans wanted that one of their goals came from a route one effort and another was a dumb arse own goal from Brendan. Captain Cornflakes led the back four as well as he could.

Our attack didn't offer much in the first half and could tell that Majok was struggling. Jumpei was typical Jumpei, whereas Roly showed some nice moves. Second half however and it was a much more quality effort from all on field. There were times when Arsenal looked physically and even creatively pummelled by our lads. Of course they have plenty of excuses and reasons why they can excuse this, but let's not forget...our squad would be worth around 1/150th of theirs in money terms.

The goal itself was just desserts and gave us plenty to enjoy both at the ground and I expect at home. If Lustica can continue to play with such emphatic confidence he could figure in far more starting XIs this season. Janjetovic was saved a couple of times by the woodwork however the same could be said of the Gunners from a Clisby blinder (never thought I'd ever say that). And Oriel looks like a very nice pick up...didn't score but was positioned well, used his body nicely and reminds me more of Tomi Juric than Pio.

After the match it was good to have a yarn with Taurus and Stringer before the shitfight to get the train home. Strolling through the crowd and seeing aerial ping pong fans outnumbered almost 4-1 by sokkah hools was a pleasant thought. Took about 90 mins to get home but hey...I got to see Lustica score!

Was a fun night, loved that Clisby and Melling got a couple of "Welcome to Western Sydney" Challenges in.

Was worth all the YMCA dance cam stuff to see Lustica score. Also a few around joining in chants at the end. Woman next to you joined in Poznan alhough the hubby wasn't any of it.

Twats (him not you obviously) we aren't the <insert random english team here> of Australia. We are Western Sydney Wanderers. I really can't stand the comparison. Although yes I felt a little flutter of pride that they noticed we are the noisy ones

Hard for me to be accurate coz, when you're surrounded by La Banda, you don't hear much else, but I thought that on at least one occasion, I heard an echo of one of the chants within ANZ stadium.

All the eurosnobs around me joined in the first song.....until they released it was from the rbb lmao.

I had so many looks throughout the night when I sang along. How dare I go for someone else 😠😠

Felt good to have a few wanderers support around me though when stevie put that goal away. Coyw

And geez I gave it to the Arsenal fans beside us and indeed the WSW fans when they started to partake in the mind numbingly stupid Mexican Wave.

Do these people just not get what football is about? I reckon the 10 or so people beside me do now.

    Idiots.

Just quietly anyone who throws a paper plane and/or does a Mexican Wave at a football match deserves to be used as a human toilet.

Haha I know who Taurus is now, you shuffled past me at half time,I was sitting right next to La Banda.

I had to take the scenic route, given my ticket had a non active bay number on it.

On the way from the station to the stadium a few blokes in front of us started with Arsenal, Arsenal ....  so me and my 2 grandkids (11 and 9) drowned them out with We come from the streets of Western Sydney ...

Due to ticket issues my son, his 2 kids and me weren't all sitting together first half. I was with my 9 yr old grandson in the corner at the RBB end. We tried to sing along with the RBB (we were the only ones doing so in our bay) but couldn't always make out the chant. Got a few looks. When anyone started with the Arsenal Arsenal we got louder with the RBB chant or just chanted Wanderers and just the 2 of us drowned them out!  All 4 of us were together 2nd half which made it even easier to drown out their attempts.

Mate, Having seen your you tube video of Lustica's goal before, you weren't that far away from me.

The so called fans I chastised were on my left, and to your right.

I was sickened by their attitude and let them know.

Anyway....... I stood just behind the RBB last night with Wanderboy Jnr male and female. I had a quick word with Taurus at ht and it was good to say hi again. Disappointed about not making the Concord West meet up but tbh, I didn't even know it was on. Also disappointed that I was only a bay away from friends that I didn't catch up with.

Regardless, It was a cracking night. Why? Because we were together as a whole identity and that is the WSW'S.

I met some amazing new people last night. And what meant more to me than anything is that we share the same brother/sisterhood.

My daughter....... first time ever in the RBB, and who was as nervous as hell, because of a scary experience for her in season 2 at an SFS derby (where she experienced flares and RD's for the first time) (and never wanted to go back) had an absolute ball last night.

She was nervous, but I assured her that all would be ok. We were about 15 rows behind the RBB and in the same bay.

The first 5 minutes of silence had to be explained to her. It made her more nervous.

I kid you not, when Boris got up and started that first chant, she was on her feet, hands in the air clapping, and singing as loud as she could. It continued for the rest of the game. She absolutely loved it.

Unfortunately though, during a break, she dropped her iPhone  in a toilet. We managed to retrieve it 20 minutes later after several trips back to the particular cubicle. She was sooooo upset after that. The phone is rooted. It would have been a perfect night otherwise, having brought on board another young and future RBB participant. In saying that..... I'm sure she still is.

Small steps we are taking. I actually loved last night. But only because of the RBB and the fact that they smashed 70000 Arsenal fans for atmosphere, and that my daughter is now not scared of you guys (lol) and would happily become a participant in future.

I also just quickly will edit this post and say how sickening it was to see Mexican waves and paper aeroplanes again.

"It drives me  ******* mental. It drives me ******* mental"...

I simply do not get the Mexican wave!!!!  At cricket, because nothing much happens a lot of the time, perhaps, but football!!????!!

Paper planes are amusing but I have no idea why you would spend money to go to the football to make paper planes and watch them fly???!!!!

I would really like to know what most of the people there last night were actually there for?  Wasn't wrapped in all the Arsenal crap - trophies, mascot etc.  They plugged the FA Cup but didn't say mention underperforming in the EPL.  I thought we took it to them pretty well but it showed how slow Oz football is and how much time our players need on the ball and to get to the ball.  They are quicker, stronger and more skillful and Laxette could buy most of the A League clubs with his transfer fee.  I thought they all did well.  Majok is a long way off the pace as yet and must have been great for him to be thrown into the game as a starter - good learning experience.  I actually thought the back line (including Hamill) did a pretty good job on the whole against a fast, effective attack.  Baccus and Melling were strong and Roly took it to them.  We really ahd no-one running forward when Roly or mids had the ball.  We were stuck too long in defence and did't transition as quickly as they did so mids were holding the ball up waiting and often passed backwards.  Still some significant work to do but in the whole a good performance and enjoyed hearing Wenger say we were physically stronger and more advanced then the Smurfs.  SBS seemed to suggest that we took it to them more strongly and gave them a tougher run.

Foz was actually glowing about WSW and our prospects this year is Oriel turns out to be a topline striker - we'll be the ones everyone chases, he suggests.  Laughed when he and Bolton couldn't remember the names of the imports from last year - Borda and Pinatares - just got Dimas.

Thought the RBB were great and the Arsenal Supporters never got going from where we sat.  Can't comprehend why our uniforms clashed so much - whose idea was it for them to play in that strip when the other night they were completely different - switch the kits for the 2 games??!!

    Mexican wave???!!!

    • Without trying to be an immensly massive knob, and I say this to someone who's opinion I respect a lot on here, thats absolutely not true. Theres a large pile studies on the impact of player performance post ACL injuries. I'm happy to have discussion about it thats evidence based, though the post game may not be the best place. We are here solely to bemoan our current standings aren't we?  That all said, I dont think Tate has any real future with his current output. He's been back at it for a season and is only showing decline
    • Not sure.  Will decide at the last minute but doubtful after todays performance.
    • With all due respect, I can't remember Tate ever putting in a decent 90min.
