  • Wanderers Outgunned By Arsenal

    mack

The Wanderers first major pre-season circus event ended with a dominant Arsenal scoring 3 goals against an spirited but outclassed Wanderers team at Homebush tonight.

Western Sydney managed to get through half an hour without punishment. On 15th minutes Steven Lustica had a chance to play through Jumpei on goal but his killer ball was blocked by an Arsenal defender. Jacob Melling was involved in set to with Xhaka & Olivier Giroud's fancy haircut, but despite the Wanderers winning a foul it seemed to fire up the Arsenal team and they took revenge shortly. After half an hour Arsenal opened the scoring, with Monreal breaking down the left wing, playing a one-two with new Arsenal signing Lacazette, who cut back the ball to Giroud to finish with a neat pass from close range.

The Wanderers defence was caught square just 5 minutes later, as the Arsenal defence smashed a long ball over the top of Brendan Hamill, he was left in the dust by Aaron Ramsey, and his chip left Vedran Janjetovic with no hope at all of making a save.

Right before half-time it was 3-0 with Mohamed Elneny striking from long distance and being helped by a deflection off Hamill.

The Wanderers came out with renewed spirit in the second half, and took the game to Arsenal. They were rewarded in the 56th minute.  Following some intense presure in the box, Jack Clisby fired in one of his trademark "shoot at hit the crossbar" strikes from outside the area, Arsenal failed to clear the ball, and were pinged for an intentional backpass to the goalkeeper. With the Arsenal team camped on the goal line, Lustica fired, hit the wall, then pounced on the rebound to shoot the ball into the roof of the net for a 3-1 scoreline.

Arsenal looked nearly certain to score a fourth, but they were held at bay with the help of the woodwork and scrambling defence from the Wanderers.

The 3-1 scoreline reflected the ebb & flow of the game well enough. Roly Bonevacia did well, particularly in the second half, and new marquee striker Oriol Riera did well enough with his limited game time. Unfortunately, neither Brendan Hamill or Jumpei Kusukami made any positive impact for the Wanderers, Hamill being part of all three Arsenal goals, and Jumpei rotating between invisibility, and being monstered off the ball by his midfield markers.

At the end of the day these matches are less about winning & losing than they are about helping to gain match fitness and regularity with the tactics involved, and on the whole it appears for the Wanderers they achieved what would have been expected of them. The pre-season will continue as we all head towards the FFA Cup and the opening rounds of the A-League.

OK I'm going to get crucified but why is joining in a mexican wave bad? It seems to me that it's just another example of group choreography started spontaneously by a crowd. Considering that many people appear to enjoy them how are they any worse than singing or turning your back and jumping?

Milwall? Meh, I've been called worse (not much worse, but worse none the less).

I found it rather ironic as well. To each their own though. :)

    Jumpei is still rubbish

Hamill is still rubbish - and only played because Aspro wasn't available

Clisby is our weakest link in the back line imo

I have no opinion on Riera. Its a "wait and see" for me. Been burned too many times with the hype train for big signings. Wouldn't be surprised to see him start the FFA Cup tbh.

We need a proper winger...badly. Jumpei and Sotirio and a makeshift Lustica (who had a great game tbh). We severely lack in this department.

Mexican waves are born out of boredom and people not really in to the game and is a distraction attempt. Something born out of boredom cannot be considered in the same area as something that is done to generate at atmosphere non stop for the full 90 mins.

Mexican waves should be the reserve of the cricket oval.

Actually I thought Mexican wave was created in Mexico ( hence the name) as a way to put off opposing players in Tennis matches and /or Football games.

So I think its much worse than boredom, it smacks of disrespect

    Guys remember:
Hammer = squaddie & Jumpei = classified as marquee (first half of last season)

So when taking a dig at Hammer, just remember in a salary cap league you have to be clever with your cap. You can't sign 11x biscuits. Jumpei on the other hand, I'm happy to give him a full season under his belt before throwing him under the bus. The team have just started training two weeks ago. I know he didn't set the league alight last year let alone have a good enough season for our side but let's hope that we see some improvement over the next few months. Improvement skill wise? No, hopefully having last season plus a full season will see him better adapt to our conditions both pitches & heat wise.

Craig foster talked about 83k crowd being evidence of high level of interest in football and that the challenge is for ffa to harness that interest. A good comment but i would have preferred to hear Craig address thos eurosnobs directly. He could have really talked up the aleague comp and put it out there that a fan of football could be attending matches each year right hear in Oz. You know, 'get out there and see whats on offer in the aleague, see the great atmosphere for yourself,  support your local team and help build this great game in Australia '.

Perhaps naive of me but these matches prove the interest is there, but we need more effort, better strategies employed to transfer that interest into bums on seats at aleague matches.

There is an issue with that EmMac. I think that after the way the relationship between the FFA and SBS soured I wasn't surprised when that didn't happen. Also, they have to be careful too because they cater towards that audience and have to make sure that they don't call them out or alienate them for not supporting the game. I agree, these opportunities could be used as a great way to promote the local game, a bit of focus on the active support, talk up the positives of the A-League or promote the FFA cup. Instead it all becomes a eurosnob wankfest.

    Positives

The EPL know that football is played in Australia

Smurfs couldn't score a goal against an EPL side

Riera looks good on and off the ball. I saw him signal the midfield to send the ball back when he was marked in the front third. Plus saw him hit on target shots.

Thwaite was excellent when he came on.

    Baccus is first DM picked.

Despite a season in the A-League, Jumpei still hasn't learned how the offside rule is applied. Zero hope for him

I was always prepared to give Jumpei a chance, but I've come to realise that he's playing out of his best position.

His best position is somewhere near Shinagawa.

Yeah i am not holding out much hope for Jumpie. He will get the old good looking goal when you least expect it but is far more likely to totally drift out of games and be hussled off the ball far to easily. Other HAL sides had him in their pockets last season and dont think this will one will be any different.

RBB was loud I was on other side of the stadium next to Arsenal "active" (thanks alot ticket****) could you hear loud and clear. I enjoyed it but was annoyed with the Euro fans, with their taking selfies throughout the game and the silly Mexican wave I didn't even know it was happening cause I was invested in the game. People leaving as well so early in the game WTH.

Was also surprised with how many Wanderer fans there was in the stadium, Would have been better if we were all together but you could see where everyone was sitting based on the goal we scored we were scattered all over the place.

Enjoyed watching Roly play in the Red and black and Jack Clisby what a cannon.

From your comment and a couple of others, it seems the RBB could be better heard at the opposite end of the stadium than I could 3 or 4 bays to their right. Weird.

We were off to the right - entry 145 - and the acoustics weren't great - I think most of the noise projects forward.

Must do - my aisle was 102.  Although, I've been in the equivalent bay to the left of the RBB [at the other end? Perth Glory match?] and they were loud and clear that night.  Is there something different about the shape of the bay or something at the other end?

hahah ******* ticketek stitched me up too. I though I bought on the WSW end, but I sat at the cornerflag at the Arsenal active end.  Could still hear RBB over the "Who are ya!" x5, "what do we think of tottenham?!" chant

It is a slightly different configuration, there's an upper tier at one end (the normal one) and not at the other. Might help to hold in the noise a bit more.

Jumpei is a great player, apparently. Popa and Nichols said so. Andres said he'd come good by January or February. It took until the very end of the season, really.  Better late than not at all, ey?

If Jumpei kicks off the season - and keeps it up - as he played in April then fair enough. However, after this Arsenal no show performance of his I doubt he'll last beyond xmas. If we sign Bridgey and a RW then Jumpei will be what he's always been: a bench player.

If anything he is a case study of how a J2 player will rate in the HAL.

Thanks. Thought that might be the case but couldn't  recall with any certainty.

I think has to do something with the acoustics of the stadium because we were directly opposite RBB in Bay 121 for the game but when I had my membership in the middle of the stadium last season it was difficult to hear the RBB

I was high in the eastern stand in line with goals. RBB was audible occasionally especially when the Goonerz went quiet.
