  • Wanderers Season Ends Against Adelaide

    mack

A late red card to Keanu Baccus, a missed penalty from Oriol Riera and some lackadaisical defence combined to see the Wanderers lose 2-3 to Adelaide United. Requiring a win to finish 6th and play in the final series, instead the Wanderers finished 7th and saw their season end at fulltime.

The quest for 6th started so well in the 15th minute, Adelaide keeper Paul Izzo got in a right tangle as he spilled a long-range shot into the path of Riera, then scrambled into the path of the striker and cut him down. Riera stepped up and slotted it into the bottom corner past the desperate dive of Izzo.

That lead lasted bare minutes. Clisby & Hamill were caught square & far up the park, standing on half way when a long bomb from the Adelaide backline flew over Clisby's foot and into the path of Baba Diawara. He had Hamill beaten for pace and finished smartly with the outside of his right foot past Vedran Janjetovic.

The topsy-turvey game continued with Adelaide taking a 2-1 lead in the 38th minute. Nathan Konstandopoulos weaved into the penalty area and had a shot blocked by the defence, only to roll into the path of midfielder Daniel Adlung, he ran onto the ball with a sweet left foot strike that curled into the top corner.

Just like the Wanderers lead earlier, Adelaide's lead was erased in quick time. Raul Llorente strode onto a ball down the left flank and delivered a first time cross into the center, it passed over Riera but Marcelo Carrusca rose into the air and nodded the ball home.

Only 3 minutes later the Wanderers were going to the penalty spot again. The referee missed a blatant penalty on Chris Ikonomidis, but the VAR intervened after a short delay. Once again Riera stepped up to face Izzo from 12 yards, Riera went the other way and Izzo had guessed correctly, turning the ball around the post for a corner.

On the hour mark the Wanderers hopes of playing in the finals drastically went down. Keanu Baccus & Johann Absalonsen tangled together while fighting for the ball, as they both fell to the turf and got up, Absalonsen stood up then went down like he was shot. After a break in play the VAR intervened, with Baccus called out and red carded for a kick out action.

Josep Gombau threw players forward looking for an unlikely winner, turning to a 3 man defensive line with Santalab & Riera up front, but the low hopes were extinguished 10 minutes from full time as Adelaide went on the counter.  Sweeping down the right flank through Nikola Mileusnic, his cross evaded both Llorente and Hamill, and Josh Risdon at the back post was completely beaten for pace by Ryan Kitto and he slammed the ball past the despairing dive for Janjetovic.

Finishing 7th is an abysmal result for the Wanderers. It is absolutely not good enough. There is no singular person who is at fault for the result tonight nor the season as a whole. It is a collective failure, a cascade of heartless players, ill disciplined players both on and off the field, inept players who have been paid for too much for what they delivered this season and a coaching structure that imploded early in the season, Gombau's desire to setup his possession first philosophy with defense as an afterthought and poor recruitment from Tony Popovic before his exit at the start of the season.

The men who own this club have some searing questions to answer to fix the major problems that plague the Wanderers this year both on field and off the field. The RBB situation is a farce and must be fixed before the start of the new season. The club staff had their big "We're in charge" banning the RBB moment, now it is time to swallow your pride and start talking with the people to resolve the situation. Spotless Stadium and it's ridiculous security apparatus that poisons the goodwill atmosphere by threats of arrests & bans against paying customers and as seen recently, club staff should not be tolerated by John Tsatsimas and the rest of the executive office at the Wanderers.

Next season is the last before our new stadium. It would be a horrible shame if we go into our new stadium without the vibrant supporter culture that involved all membership groups at the club and another year of failure on the pitch to go along with it.

Yup, that's clearly what I was doing by asking why if this squad was full of such amazing talent, that none of them but Riera could manage 5 goals and wondering if our supposedly "top 4 squad" was actually a top 4 squad when our foreign attacking trio Jumpei, Roly & Cejudo combined scored as many goals as Jason Hoffman did.

I must be blind to not see how good and how easily this side should have made the top 4, quite clearly I was blinded by this apparent superiority on display in such brilliant performances as losing 2-1 to Adelaide at home in the FFA Cup Semi Final and needing penalties against Blacktown City in the FFA Cup Quarter final and the 2-2 draw against the Mariners in Round 2.

Where were the #GombauOut hashtags after those matches?

It's all Gombau's fault, it's his fault Brendan Hamill scored as many goals as Santalab did this year. That Cejudo, Roly, Jumpei all scored less than Sotirio. When our team were 1-1 against Perth Glory, we went a man up, had the opposition goalkeeper sent off, putting an outfielder in goals, Gombau ordered his players not to shoot at goal for the 8 minutes of stoppage time.

It's all Gombau's fault. Re-sign everyone and give the side to Popa or Kenny Lowe or Paul Okon and we're gonna win the title next season.

Actually the fact that Hoffman has had a good season shows you what a good coach can do with average players.

A coach that struggles to put talented players to good use should have questions asked about them, that's not unreasonable.

who was the spanish coach we were apparently going to sign? is he still a chance? i still think we should keep gombau for one more season but if we cant is that a viable or good option? i sometimes wonder how we would have done if gombau wasnt undermined by virtually everyone in the club

also just because santa is a club legend it doesnt make him right about everything

Was German Dick Schuster i think.

Gombau has been called a fraud of a coach by a number of people and I'm with them.

oh yea some of us think he deserves a chance with his own squad, honestly i am not pretending he is perfect, but honestly so far his signings has been much better than tony's so if we could have tony in charge of tactics and gombau in charge of signings then i would be pretty happy with that, if we fire him and then hire frank farina its time to jump in front of a bus

And I think he deserves to be booted out before he causes any more damage to the club.

The whole "not his squad" is total rubbish. Had Ernie Merrick (who I consider the best manager in the comp) taken over in November we would have been firing.

I agree, his signings looked good. Unfortunately, in his managerial wisdom, he somehow forgot to sign a capable CB. We've been treading water all season. 7 points after Rd 5, 18 points after Cornflakes' and Jumpei's last games Rd 14, and now 33 points after 27 rounds. No improvement at the end of the season when it mattered most.

Talks with his successor will have been had already if the club wants him gone. The club considers the last two seasons sub standard and a failure. They are not going to preside over another one, and will not hand over the team to a low cost/high risk manager.

Dirk Schuster. No chance now. His agent tried to do a shifty deal, and the club turned away. But that's the kind of quality we were and should again be aiming for.

Gombau did all the undermining himself. The club told him "do this" and he did the opposite.

And that's something Popa was good at. IMO, we had a better squad this season than the one that won the ACL ffs!

It's such a shame that Popa never got to work with this squad. His squad.

I'm not sure we'd all be having these discussions if he had stayed. That though, we will never know, unfortunately.

    This

Im not saying squad was perfect or that they aren’t to blame. But do we honestly think Gombau got the best out of the squad he was given

blame aside I just can’t see what he has done to show he’s the best dude for the gig

It’s a salary capped league one area where you can spend to gain an advantage is manager and a good manager makes a huge difference, especially over time. I’d hope that the club know that and are willing to spend big on this, it will cost em more if they don’t as another **** season and the season ticket money, crowds, match and sponsorship money will dry up

can you imagine the club actually spending money on a good coach? i think you are being a bit melodramatic when it comes to talking about how much damage to the club its not like he is going to walk up to parramatta stadium and explode it so we cant use it for a couple more seasons, i do agree that he should have signed a good or great CB instead of removing one(sounds like he wanted out though) and replacing him with no one.

i dont know what the club told him to do apart from make the finals which obviously we didnt do, honestly his signings excite me him as a coach i am not at all sold on but i dont think he is nearly as bad as others say

We need to be going back to the new Parramatta Stadium in a strong position.

Minimum top 4 next season (preferably top 2), and a strong RBB.

If the club can't sort this out next season, they are going to cost themselves millions. Simples.

Bayern got a good demo at the beginning of the season how even a world class coach like Ancelotti can run down a world class side. Tactics, man management, fitness - all down the toilet. His successor cranked up the training intensity, tweaked formation and starting xi, connected with the players, and success returned almost immediately. That's what I expected from Gombau, and that's why I was all for him. He did the opposite.

i dont have that much faith people who run the club even know what football is or have more than 2 brain cells to rub together do you really think they would understand your post?

The club was willing to spend big on Eduardo last season. The club was willing to spend big on both Milicic and Schuster. It was not their fault that it didn't happen.

You don't think that damage has been done to the club by coming 7th? We are the laughing stock of the league. Gombau has been a disaster, he offered nothing over the last 5 months. Why anyone would want to reward non performance of a manager is beyond me. Him getting sacked after 10 rounds next season as Bozza suggests would be the worst case scenario. It needs to be avoided.

On the CB issue, who would we have signed? I don't remember there being any good CB's available and affordable in the January window, particularly the ball playing CB that would work in our system.

It's not unreasonable that the club decided to bank the leftover cap space for next season when we have time to scout a proper fit, and use Thwaite and Hamill as starting CB's with Aspro as backup and Clisby as emergency backup. Aspro got injured after the January window closed and Thwaite got sent off. There aren't many clubs in the league set up with the depth to handle that scenario.

I may be wrong but carrusca counts as an Australian now so we had a spare marquee spot, so we could have got an overseas player, which of the case I refuse to believe that there wasn’t a better centre back available than Hammil

They brought two current La Liga players to the club this year, they weren’t getting paid peanuts the club spent money this year,

Last year they skimped and it showed

Regardless of what anyone thinks of Gombau - your last sentence is a genuine concern.

Our marquees are Riera and Cejudo I believe, so we'd have to sign someone under the cap. Carrusca is considered Australian so we have a visa spot free, however the options are much more limited in the January window and I suspect it takes a bit more work to convince to foreigner to come to the A-League. It'd take time to scout someone, especially as it would be difficult to find someone willing to move for a 6 month deal so we'd be taking a risk on a longer term deal.

With the hindsight of knowing Aspro got a season ending injury it's easy to say it was a mistake, but at the time (considering how unlikely we looked to win trophies in January) it made sense to bank the cap space for next season.

I think the free visa spot is now for an Asian player (4 plus 1)
