  • What Players Should West Sydney Sign?

    mack

I have pondered the question of exactly where our players are going to come from. Who they are. What options are available on the market right now.

As such I have taken some time to draw up a list of players I think could be brought in to start this team.

To the best of my knowledge these players are all off contract.

    Goalkeeper

There is in my opinion one name that should be the #1 signing for the new club. Mark Birighitti. With the ongoing Newcastle debacle, his pre-contract has been terminated and he is free to look for other clubs. I believe if signed to a long-term contract and given the #1 shirt that he is a player that could provide the club with a positive transfer in the future. In the same way as Langerak did for Melbourne Victory.

Reece Crowther would be another good signing, a local junior he would provide solid competition for the first team position.

    Defence

To start off, Pedj Bojic would be a great signing. He is a tireless defender who has the ability to get up and down the pitch all game long. He has played for Parramatta Power and Sydney Olympic as well as already working in Sydney as a personal trainer, it could make sense for him to join the team.

Anyone whowatches Michael Thwaite can see the passion that he brings to any club. He wears his heart on his sleeve and never gives up. He is a born leader, and one that our players can take inspiration from.

Mario Šimić has been given little opportunity at the Newcastle Jets. Left back is often a problem position, and one that many clubs choose to head overseas to fill. Mario could provide depth and competition to any player picked ahead of him.

Tarek Elrich grew up in Western Sydney, and has gained a lot of A-League experience in his time at Newcastle. Rarely misses games through injury, which is something a new club can ill afford.

Antony Golec is another West Sydney product, having come through the Sydney United youth system. Another player who has had a lack of opportunity, if stationed alongside an experienced player it could enable Antony to make the most of the potential many see in him.

    Midfield

In almost any formation one player is needed with steel and determination, a midfield destroyer. Kasey Wehrman has never had his toughness or desire challenged, and may be looking for a new challenge after events at Newcastle put his future into doubt.

On the other side of the coin you have the spark on attack, players you look to unlock defences and promote the ball to the strikers. One of Australia's hottest talents in this area is Tom Rogić. He is likely to be on the shopping list of many teams, that may not be limited to Australian teams, so any move is going to have to be quick.

Ali Abbas is now a naturalised Australian citizen. Having first joined Marconi he is no stranger to Western Sydney. A fast quick winger who can get behind defences and whip in crosses he could be very useful to the new team.

    Forwards

Like Ali Abbas, Labinot Haliti is an immigrant to Australia, and another player who had their talent recognised by West Sydney teams. In this case, it was Sydney Olympic and Sydney United where he found his way as a player before eventually reaching Newcastle. His personality could be a drawcard.

    Foreign Players

Despite having a free slate and the world to look for players, there are those who have played in Australia or are in Australia but set to end contracts.

Alex Terra was a fan favourite in Melbourne with his quick and exciting play, including several spectacular overhead kicks. He was surprisingly cut from the Melbourne Heart squad, and if the team looks to play fast football he is a player that could easily fit into that.

Andrezinho provided a vital point of differentiation to an otherwise stoic Perth Glory squad. If the price is right, he could provide a very good pickup on the left wing.

Marcos Flores is the 2010/11 Johnny Warren Medal winner, and provided Adelaide with an incredibly potent attacking playmaker. Despite being on contract in China, it has been reported that he is unhappy there and could be lured back to Australia. If signed he would provide an x-factor to the team that could win them any game as well as enabling the patrons to see his silky skills.

These are by no means the only players available. Others that could join include Ante Rozic, Adnan, Ben Halloran, and I'm sure there will be more names spotted.

This also doesn't include the players that will surely come from the various Western Sydney state leagues.

    Tell me what you think.

and for a marquee (if we even get one): flores would be good to suit the type of football we want to see

What would be nice if we could pick up some up and coming talent with the potential to trade for some profit as well. Our club should be leading the wayon junior talent as well as demonstrating the viability of a A League club.

How do people feel about getting a couple of asian players. My reason in saying this is that there is a huge asian population in and around parramatta and this may make them want to support the club and make them feel that the club also represents them as asian-australians. without an asian player they may feel the club doesn't represent the asian community that is from WS. any thought?

most definately agree. sydney fc tried it by signing kazu and they pulled heaps of japanese supporters to watch his guess stint which didnt lasted a couple of games. they then tried byun and moriyasu but they were not the most inspirational players who did not actively engage the audience well.

if we do it, it must be done right, maybe promote one or two talented young players with an asian background and also use one of the visa places to bring in one international player from asia.

I dunno, it might be hard to keep hold of him before the big clubs in Europe come knocking.

I loved Moriyasu the first time I saw him (at the festival of football, vs rangers, blackburn and AEK Athens), then he didn't seem to get much of a go until someone got injured. I think Byun was pretty popular with SFC wasn't he? And then with the Jets too? I'd love to see some Asian footballers playing for us. Parra and Cabra - the two that matta

don't think we should bother getting a marquee player first season unless its a socceroo like Lucus Neil, Emerton or Cahill.

Would rather not recycle too many A-league players, no more than around 8 out of the squad hopefully. I would like to see the others as returning aussies, 2-4 players would be a realistic chance of enticing back, 6 or so of the best talent from the NSWPL and the remaining would be filled with the overseas quota of 4 (If i'm not wrong) players, not to fussed where they are from.

for japanese players, these two should be easy to get and are great, Ryuji Miyazawa and Yuchi Yamauchi. Both play for blacktown city, both have started this season on fire. they are fast on and off the ball, can shoot, can tackle, got great stamina, great first touch.

We got to look at the NSWPL, that is like a nursury in itself.

also saun rooney, playing in indonesia. a local boy from blacktown, played for newcastle in the A-League, would be a great back up forward.

Most of the players you listed wouldn't even think about coming back to Oz, Coe, Garcia, Troisi, Jedinak etc etc. but would be potential targets when they reach the end of their career. Garcia will find a new club in England for sure, nearly scored last night also.

I plead to them not to sign Reddy! Try and get Lawrence Thomas!

For a keeper I'd be looking at someone like Vedran Janjetovic. Very solid keeper, was goalkeeper of the year in the NSWPL in 2009 also a local boy.

Failing that I'd be looking at Birighitti or Covic if Victory decide not to re-sign him.

Iwouldn't mind these 4 players from the keepers would have a clue but would love Vukovic but he is still under contract.

    Michael Thwait

    Pedj Bojic

    Tom Rogic

    Mile Jedinak

Good Aussie players in Europe who might consider the A-League (I think):

Richie Cardozo (LASK Linz - Austria) - Midfielder

Aaron Mooy (St Mirren - Scotland) - Midfielder

Robert Stamboldziev (AO Thrasyvoulos Fylis - Greece) - Striker

Daniel Georgievski (HNk Sibenik - Croatia) - Right/Left Back

Richard Porta (Nacional - Uruguay) - Striker

Michael Baird (Sabah - Malaysia) - Striker

I think we need to ensure some local NSWPL talent get a run. We should have an ethos, that being the A League club for our region, we take on board 3 or so players minimum. It's also why I like the idea of the local P/L clubs playing as a curtain raiser at our games. We all get to see the talent on show. We should have a genuine link between them and us as a feeder.

Richard Porta is an interesting one since since he was born in Western Sydney. Would definitely be worth a look I think.

I believe Mooy and Georgievski are also from Western Sydney.

I think although he was born in Sydney, he's been in Uruguay since before he was old enough to walk.

    <p>Hi There

There has been alot of good players mentioned. I noticed alot of newcastle players mentioned, is this because they are off contract or is the assumption they dont have a club, becasue as far as I know the next A league season consists of 10 teams - this has been mentioned numerous times on the forums, so I am thinkinh they know things we dont in regards to Newcastle competing next season. I would like to mention a few things:

    • Scott Chipperfield is looking to come back to the A league
    • Kerem Bulent is better of overseas away from his so called friends then back here playing as it will be all down hill for him if he came back to play
    • there is a player called Goran Subara plays in singapore S League, he should be checked out
    • players in the NSWPL to consider, Adel El Jamal, Ali Akbal, Robert Younis, shane Webb, Jamie McMaster, Nahuel Arrarte, James Chronopoulos, Nathan Elasi, Mitchell Long, Kutaiba Elrich, Chris Payne, Yuchi Yamauchi - im mot saying they should all play in west sydney team but they could play A League level, also a few would really push players that think they have a certain spot.
    • also rigters from gold coast and ohalloran would be good additions as well as James brown

sorry i put the comment in again as i didnt like the format
