    Popovic Speaks on Wanderers Progress

The Western Sydney Wanderers page released a media clip of Tony Popovic speaking at the launch.

With the club announcing a five-year deal to play at Parramatta Stadium, alongside the unveiling of NRMA Insurance as major sponsors and the new red-and-white Nike away kit, it was a big day for Wanderers FC, and for Popa it’s a positive boost to the progress also taking place on the field.

“It’s great to have this venue for five years,†Popovic said. “It has that real football field and that atmosphere. We’re delighted NRMA are on board as well. It’s been a great day for the club.

“It shows how serious the club is, when you’re getting blue-chip sponsors on board, it shows where they see the club and the short and long-term goals that we all have.â€

Popovic was also happy to finally talk about on-field matters, following his side’s 5-0 win against local side Nepean FC in their first ever fixture, with midfielder Aaron Mooy and four-goal triallist Joe Gibbs impressing on the night.

“The players were really looking forward to the game,†Popa said. “Some of them haven’t played in about four months so it was nice to get a hit-out. Nice to get a win, it was a great crowd – it was a historic day for the club.

“Aaron’s always been a great young talent and we’re delighted to have him on board. Now we’ve got to work with him to develop his game and get that consistency week in, week out, and so far he’s worked hard and we’re building towards improving his level.

“And it was a great performance by Joe; he’s a young boy looking for an opportunity. No matter who you play it’s still four goals.

“We’ve got a few other players to consider in that position; he’s given himself a great chance. The other players all acquitted themselves well and the coaching staff will assess that – we’re close to naming another three or four players hopefully in the next week.â€

    • The guy is a professional footballer, even playing on a different side to his preferred, the concept of defending doesn’t change. He hardly looked like he was giving it a go. I think all too often we can be so lenient on mistakes made by players across the league. Let’s not forget that they are professionals, they get paid (a bloody decent amount) and should have the skillset required to atleast be able to do a job in a different to preferred position. It’s not like all age, where one week they are banging then in as a striker and then next they’ve got the gloves on as the regular keeper is away with the missus.
