I know Wellington are dismal right now, though I heard the commentators say we just broke our record for most shots in a single match?

According to ALeaguestats.com.au yes it was. Previously record holder was Wellington who had 30 shots against Victory in January. 2nd place was Wanderers in a 0-0 against Victory where we had 28 shots.
