No one will die wandering when the Western Sydney Wanderers take on Mounties Wanderers on Saturday night with Trevor Morgan’s side needing three points to keep the heat on rivals and competition frontrunners Sydney FC.
The Red & Black currently sit behind their fierce cross-town rivals and with a big derby clash on the horizon the following Saturday, the Wanderers must keep pace with the pace setters against their fourth-placed opponents at Blacktown Football Park.

Having dropped points to Marconi in last Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Popondetta Park, there’s little margin for error in what could prove to be a potential banana skin for the Wanderers.

Currently fourth on the PlayStation 4 NPL2 NSW Men’s competition ladder, Mounties were defeated 1-0 by NPL1 heavyweights Manly United in the Westfield FFA Cup on Wednesday.

And although their league form has been patchy of late, a 1-0 win over mid-table St. George last Sunday provided a significant amount of respite following a 3-1 loss to Marconi and two consecutive draws with Bankstown City and North Shore Mariners.

It remains an important game for the Luis Contigiani coached Mounties, who have a host of teams breathing down their necks vying for a top six position.

Matthew West represents the main goal scoring threat for Mounties, with the British import enjoying a fine season with seven goals in 10 matches and looking set to break his highest goal scoring tally of eight.

Having signed Hyundai A-League contracts earlier last week, it’s another chance for the Wanderers’ leading goal scorer Lachlan Scott and creative attacker Mario Shabow to display their elite credentials.

The dynamic pair have spearheaded the Red and Black’s successful NPL debut so far with 12 and five goals respectively and will no doubt be key figures for the Wanderers in Saturday’s clash.

I'll must admit I missed that one. Looked down for one moment all bloody game.

He made a great run for the 4th goal too. Hoping he fills out a bit between now & October. Think we'll see him in the odd HAL game next year if he does

Scott's 2nd goal was a bit fortunate, but was reward for good lead up work.

He got around his defender near the byline, cut inside the 6 yard box & tried to play a pass to a team mate at the far post for a tap in. The GK tried to save / intercept it & the ball ended up in the net.

Wanderers within touching distance after win over Mounties

It was the perfect weekend for the Western Sydney Wanderers in the PS4 NPL2 competition as they made up an incredible amount of ground on Sydney FC in the race for promotion.
Going into their three matches against Mounties 22 points off first-placed Sydney FC, the Red & Black won all three games to close the gap to just four points after Sydney FC lost first grade and U20s to Marconi Stallions.

It was exactly what was needed heading into this Saturday’s first-ever NPL Sydney Derby at Lambert Park.

The match against Mounties started brightly with chances to Mario Shabow and Ramy Najjarine as both youngsters shot off target. Shabow almost made amends when his shot on the turn bounced off the woodwork but the Wanderers had the lead only five minutes later.

It was a sensational strike from Alusine Fofanah to open the scoring with the winger scoring from a very wide position.

Only two minutes later and it was 2-0 with Liam Youlley converting a penalty after Shayne D’Cunha was felled in the box.

Funnily enough, both goals came while the Wanderers only had ten men on the pitch as Daniel Alessi was getting treatment on the sideline.

Just as half time was approaching Mounties got a goal back with a nice strike but when the two teams came out after half time there was only going to be one winner.

Tariq Maia, Lachlan Scott and Najjarine all had chances to extend the lead before Scott fired a quick-fire double in the final ten minutes for a 4-1 win.

It was Scott’s 14th goal in only 12 NPL matches this season.

Next week sees the Wanderers take on Sydney FC at Lambert Park in the first-ever NPL Sydney Derby. First grade kicks-off at 2pm.
