GF 15, GA 8, GD +07

Brisbane

5 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses

Brisbane have the 2nd and 3rd top scorers, Muratovic (CF) and Leck (RW) with 6 and 5 goals respectively.

Team selection depends on Babbel's selection.

Anyone who is under contract, fit & owns a pair of boots, will fancy his chances of getting a game on Friday.

Babbel will want to win both games, as he respects the work the club have been doing in regard to developing our youff. Winning trophies is a positive for player mentality

Does anyone know if ANZ stadium will issue pass-outs between the Y-League final and the A-League game?

I'd like to watch the youngsters in the final, but don't want to get stuck in that shithole for an hour and a half between games.

Unfortunately not. Take a picnic dinner. ANZ will let you take food in.

I'm hoping that we can all be in the lower bowl for NYL GF.

I may have heard this wrong but I'm sure I heard old mate Nick Meredith complaining last Friday night that Roar's NYL team had finished top by a big margin and deserved a home final !!

If they ended up top with 16 points and were ahead by a big margin that just means their conference sucks. We finished on 18 points and it went down to the last game of the season.

Meredith is a wanker. Pretty sure they won it on goal difference?

If you want to be acknowledged as the champions, you should have no fear of travelling to the home of the defending champs & playing them in their own backyard.

The Roar's next home game is on Friday, 8/2 v's ESFC & will probably have a WL semi as the curtain raiser

They beat Melb Vic in one game 6-0. There's your goal difference.

Melb Vic NYL results

1 win, 1 draw, 6 losses.

But the most pissed off will Heartle$$. Supposedly the best facilities but serves them right for their pathetic attitude after last season's GF. They just pissed off into the sheds and didn't acknowledge our boys. Typical CFG scum attitude

Unfortunate about the KO time but understandable with the requirements between games.

Lets hope some semblance of a crowd rocks up to support the future.

I wish they had pushed the A-League game back by 25 minutes so it would have been a 4.45pm to 5.00pm kick off.

Imagine if they win, the heat on the A-league team.

I get the issue with the start time but here goes an explanation.

4.20 pm start first half start. 45 minutes + injury time.

5.15 pm half time

5.25 pm second half. 45 minutes + injury time.

6.10 - 6.15pm normal time ends.

if required, extra time starts around 6.20pm with 15 minutes each way. No break between extra time halves. Extra time ends around 6.50pm

then if necessary, penalties till 7.00pm.

Presentation after that till 7.15pm.

A-League warm up after that.

i have organised with my boss to work extra time this week so that I can leave early on Friday to get to the game. And like my youngest son says, at least they win.

The above is why it starts so early. They probably thought a double header would get people to the game but its going to have the reverse effect.

Should have played it on Saturday at marconi.

John Roberts ready to prove his – and Western Sydney’s – credentials in Y-League Grand Final

By  Joey Lynch -
 January 30, 2019 0

The 2018/19 A-League campaign is largely shaping as one to forget for Western Sydney Wanderers.

Seemingly mastering the art of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, the side from Sydney’s West sits third bottom on the A-League table after 16 rounds – only tasting triumph twice in that stretch.

Ostensibly guaranteed to be missing finals for the second straight year, those that bleed both red and black have become increasingly vocal in their frustrations; decrying what they see as a lack of heart within the squad compared to the feverish passion that wafted from the club during its first, glory-filled years in existence.

There is perhaps no existing side in the A-League that has looked to forge a sense of identity like the Wanderers, with the club shamelessly espousing themselves as not as figureheads of an entire state or a city, but of the fiercely parochial West of Sydney.

Though their fans may feel that this identity may have slipped at an A-League level in recent times, one area in which it is still going strong is in the club’s academy.

Utilizing a philosophy that takes its cue from the famous ‘cantera’ academy of La Liga’s Atletic Bilbao – which only accepts youngsters from Spain’s Basque region – the Wanderers foremost priority is to scour Sydney’s West for talent; never enlisting those from other areas if the equivalent skill can be found on their doorstep.

As well as being an important cultural maker, it’s an ethos that has serviced the Wanderers well on the field, with the academy sending the likes of Tate Russell, Tass Mourdoukoutas, Mathieu Cordier, Nicholas Suman and Abraham Majok to Markus Babbel’s senior side in recent weeks.

That success has also carried over to a youth level, with the Wanderers on Friday afternoon set to defend their Y-League 2017/18 Y-League crown in the Grand Final of the 2018/19 edition of the competition against Brisbane Roar at ANZ Stadium.

Head Coach Arthur Diles side booked their place in the Y-League decider on the final day of the regular season, defeating crosstown foes Sydney FC 2-1 in a do-or-die clash at Marconi Stadium thanks to a late goal from striking prospect John Roberts.

Born to Sierra Leonean parents in Guinea, Roberts moved to Australia as an eight-year-old refugee and was recruited to the now-closed FFA Centre of Excellence from Western Sydney side Mt Druitt Town Rangers.

Initially joining Melbourne City after leaving the CoE in July of 2017, homesickness led to Roberts leaving City to return to Sydney’s West in January of 2018; signing a scholarship contract with the club and playing – and scoring – against his former City teammates in the Wanderers 2017/18 Y-League Grand Final win.

Since then Roberts, a former captain of Australia at a U17 level, was a member of Ante Milicic’s Young Socceroos squad as a 17-year-old at the 2018 AFC U19 Championships.

Speaking to dailyfootballshow.com, Roberts said he was looking forward to taking part in another Y-League grand final.

“It’s always good to play in a grand final,” he said

“We have a good squad from last year and winning the grand final (in 17/18) gives us more advantage in experience to show what we can do back-to-back.

“Going to the final two years in a row is not an easy thing to do.

“I think we’re now one of the best academies in the country.”

Though named in a number of Babbel’s extended A-League squads in 18/19, Roberts has not yet followed in the footsteps of several of his Wanderers academy fellows in making the jump from youth to senior football.

Nevertheless, Roberts is pleased with the progress he has made since Babbel arrived at Wanderland and is taking heart in the exploits of his fellow youngsters.

Roberts4-300x169.png

Roberts in action in the 2017/18 Y-League Grand Final against Melbourne City

“For me, I take every game as a step,” he explained

“Every game matters to me.

“I just always try to do my best and play the best as I can and show all the people that are watching my talent.

“I’ve been happy with my training, my season this year. Just have to be patient to try and break into the first team.

“This season, I’ve worked more decision making – I’ve improved a lot. My first touch and making decisions when I’m on the ball I think I’ve improved a lot in that as well.

“I’ve seen all the boys given a chance to play in the first team it makes all the (academy) boys motivated to push and to try to be where the others are.

“Markus giving the young players a go is a big step and motivation for the other boys to try and improve and be better and want to be where the others are.

“Mostly after training the young players stay back to do extras (with Babbel), just to try to improve on the little things we need to improve on, which has helped us a lot.

“Even during when we’ll play games he helps the young players, just commentate to them in a positive way to make them improve.

“He goes that extra mile.”

As Wanderers chase history, Y-League Head Coach Athur Diles eyes further growth

By  Joey Lynch -  January 31, 2019
Champions-640x360.jpg

On Friday, the Y-League side of Western Sydney Wanderers will run out onto the surface of ANZ Stadium not only looking to affirm their status as the best academy in Australia – but also equal a little bit of history.

Champions of the Y-League in 2017/18, the youth of Sydney’s West not only has the chance to join Sydney FC, Melbourne City and Central Coast Mariners as multiple time champions of the competition but also become the first ever side since a youth football league was re-introduced by the A-League to go back-to-back.

Given the fluid nature of youth football, in which the number one goal is not the pursuit of results but instead the development of players and promotion to senior football, back-to-back national youth titles are exceedingly rare, having previously only occurred twice.

The Australian Institute of Sport was the first to accomplish the feat when they downed Adelaide City 4-1 and 8-1 in the deciders of the 1997/98 and 1998/99 seasons.

Their exploits were then matched by the Parramatta Power youth, who defeated Melbourne Knights 2-0 in the 2001/02 decider and Whittlesea Stallions 6-2 in the 2002/03 finale.

Joining the Wanderers academy in 2015 after a stint as the Technical Director of Sydney Olympic (who won a single national youth title in 1987), Arthur Diles has helped oversee a sustained period of success for the youth incubating at Wanderland.

The former Sydney Olympic, Sydney United, Parramatta Power, Crawley Town and KV Mechelen player was initially put in charge of the club’s U18s, before winning a U20 NSW NPL2 championship in 2017 and making the move to the Y-League Head Coaching role in the championship-winning season of 2017/18.

Roberts3-300x169.png

The Wanderers won their first national youth title in 2017/18

The Wanderers have never finished with less than 13 points since the Y-League made the shift to its current, eight-game format in 2015/16 – the same year that the academy expanded to include teams beyond seniors and U20s – and Diles says that this consistent success comes down to a clear sense of purpose.

“I think when this academy started almost four years ago it had a clear vision of where it wanted to be,” Diles told dailyfootballshow.com

“With our technical director Ian Crook and all the coaching staff from 13s all the way up there’s a lot of good coaches here and everyone’s working really hard to achieve that, and this year’s starting to show where the academy’s heading.

“It doesn’t mean that we’re there yet, I think we’re still scraping the surface at the moment.

“Once the new complex (The Wanderers will soon move into a $15m facility in Rooty Hill) is finished next month I think we’ll again improve in leaps and bounds.

“As of this year, the club has made an incredible decision to wipe any fees associated with any player that comes into the Wanderers. Just with that, making that statement really shows that these people are very interested and passionate about the academy.

“Once you can start doing things like this, you can start to call yourself a proper football club because anywhere around the world – you look at clubs in Europe or South America or in Asia – clubs that are professional, very few of them make their players play to be there.

“The fact that we can do that only after four years is a testament to the owner and the club that they can do that moving forward and will allow us to keep working in a professional way, take away the financial restraints that it has on some families and allow every player to be part of the Wanderers whether they can afford it or, you can be there if you’re good enough.”

In contrast with their 2017/19 season, in which a high powered Wanderers outfit coasted through the Y-League’s regular season to the Grand Final, the 2018/19 campaign has carried with it significantly more challenge for the Red and Black.

With the struggles of Markus Babbel’s senior side often meaning that youth were called up – the likes of Tass Mourdoukoutas, Tate Russel, Mathieu Cordier, Nicholas Suman and Abraham Majok have become regular parts of the Wanderers senior side in recent months – the Wanderers were forced to battle right down to the last game of the season in 18/19; defeating Sydney FC 2-1 to finally secure their place in the season finale.

A-League-Rd-11-Western-Sydney-v-Melbourn

Abraham Majok is one of a number of Wanderers’ academy graduates to receive regular A-League minutes in 2018/19

For Diles, however, having players develop to the point where they can be promoted to A-League level represents a far larger goal then the short term pursuit of Y-League results.

“A lot of these boys that have come through in the last year, especially in the last month or six weeks, those boys have been here from the day the academy started,” he said

“They were all here, they came to this club as 15 and 16-year-olds and that makes it a little bit more special because they’re not just players that came here in the NYL and went from the NYL to the first grade.

“Those boys all played in the same U18s team here when we first started the academy and for me, it’s been an absolute joy and pleasure to see them progress that way.

“At the same time, looking at where they’re at, we know how hard we have to work with the next crop coming through because we want to get them in a better place then these ones are.

“We continue to work harder, we have to keep doing more in order to keep growing our program.

“There’s a lot to be excited about but at the same time, we’ve got to realise that these things where you get five or six young players into your first team doesn’t happen very often around the world. You’re normally getting one or two in there every couple of years.

“We’ll continue to try and maintain that but the reality is that there might not come as thick and fast as this current crop has but there’s a lot of good players for the club that the fans can be excited about in the coming years.

“It’s actually been quite interesting from our (academy) end because when I first came in and Popa (Tony Popovic) was still the head coach we would all follow suit and we had a certain structure and philosophy which the whole club covered.

“With Josep (Gombau) that changed, the philosophy changed so we still followed suit and then this year (with the switch from Gombau to Babbel) there’s been a slight change again but also a change in the mentality.

“It’s not just about learning the one system to play.

“We have a style of football that we want to follow but the structure or the system can change within that and that’s probably been a great thing that we’ve been able to play – and that’s from the academy all the way through – some different systems, not just the same system.

“I think that’s important for the player’s development.”

Of all the Western Sydney Wanderers' teams that have done it tough this season, it's their most depleted squad that could deliver the club its only triumph. Seemingly against all odds, their National Youth League side have reached Friday's grand final despite the team reduced to the bare bones every game. Coach Arthur Diles has guided the young Wanderers to a second successive decider despite never having his full squad available this season.

Call up: Marc Tokich, left, is one of several youngsters who will be unavailable for the Wanderers' youth side for their NYL grand final.

That's due to the struggles of the A-League team and head coach Markus Babbel's of promoting youth to make-up for injuries and underperforming senior players and that won't change on Friday. Against Brisbane Roar at ANZ Stadium, Diles will be without youth players; goalkeeper Nicholas Suman, defender Tate Russell and midfielders Marc Tokich and Keanu Baccus - the latter never having played for the youth team he's eligible for having spent the season with the A-League team. All four have been called-up for Friday night's A-League game against the Jets.

The NYL squad has received a boost with Abraham Majok, Mathieu Cordier, Tass Moudoukoutas back from the A-League squad while Kosta Grozos has made his return from injury.

Despite being depleted of first choice players week in, week out, the Wanderers still topped their conference with six wins from eight games. That they made the grand final is already a triumph of their depth and investment into their youth academy and retain their NYL trophy would go some way to providing fan optimism for next season, when they move into their new stadium.

Here's our squad from last Sunday

Y-League Starting XI: Carwardine, Aquilina, Pagden, Cordier, Wilmering, Mahazi (c), Monge, Agamemnonos, Roberts, Peterson, Adam Substitutes: Kalac, Constable, Grozos, Silvera #WSW #WSWvSYD.

What changes do we anticipate could occur.

Mahazi played 90 mins, so I expect he moves back onto the bench for AL game.

MonsterKoutas & Majok are probable starters. I doubt we pull a surprise & start Grozos, given he's probably only ready for 45 - 60 mins at most.

Greenwood / Suman & Tokich are possible late inclusions.

Russell is unlikely to play NYL GF, as we have precious little defensive cover in the extended AL squad

All depends on Markus then.

Roar are apparently taking quite a few youth players to Adelaide

We have to watch out for Muratovic, Brady and Leck if playing (not listed in the Brisbane A-league squad)  plus an ex-WSW academy player, ? Duncan.
