The Western Sydney Wanderers did what they had to do tonight to get all three points against the struggling Melbourne Heart.
In a game which never reached any level of brilliance it was Shannon Cole who turned the ball home in the 27th minute to give the Wanderers a lead which Melbourne Heart were unable to assail.
Heart marquee player Harry Kewell missed out as a result of an ankle injury sustained at training earlier this week. Youssouf Hersi also missed out having failed to recover from his foot injury. Mark Bridge was dropped to the bench, with Brendon Santalab & Shannon Cole taking position on the wings. The biggest surprise was that Matthew Spiranovic was given his debut for the Wanderers in place of captain Michael Beauchamp.
The key moment came in the 27th minute. Adam D'Apuzzo whipped in a cross from deep. With Tomi Juric making a central run it was a Melbourne Heart defender who got a touch that skipped off his head. Cole chested the ball down and fired a shot that was blocked by Aziz Behich, it fell kindly for Cole who fired in a second shot with Behich prostrate on the ground, through Patrick Gerhardt's legs and beating Andrew Redmayne.
Not long after it was Brendon Santalab who wasted a golden chance to double the advantage for the visitors. Shinji Ono delivered a deep cross to the back post which found Spiranovic. The debutante headed back at goal but could only hit the crossbar. It fell onto the head of Santalab but only a meter out and with the keeper nowhere to be found it bounced off his head and over the bar.
The best chance for the Heart came in the second half in the 'pinball of all pinball' moments. The Wanderers were unable to clear the ball and player after player for the Heart took a chance at shooting, only for desperate defence for Western Sydney to keep the ball out. Apart from that the Heart were limited to long range efforts or crosses with no-one on the end of them.
Tomi Juric should have put the game beyond doubt in the 90th minute when he out-paced Gerhardt to go clean through on goal. Gerhardt did manage to clip his run slightly but Juric should have either buried the shot or cutback to Aaron Mooy who was unmarked with what would have been a tap-in. Instead Juric fired at goal with Redmayne making a reaction save. Juric hurt himself in the process and with all the subs used he stayed on the pitch, albeit as a bystander who could barely walk.
It was a heavy grinding win in conditions that in typical Melbourne fashion included both rain and shine. The victory boosts Western Sydney to the top of the A-League with the other 4 games of the round to come. Melbourne Heart remained anchored to last place behind Wellington & Sydney FC.
The next Wanderers match is against Melbourne Victory on Saturday the 16th of November, 7:45PM at Parramatta Stadium.
On this Sunday the 10th of November the NYL & W-League squads for Western Sydney will be playing in a double header at Marconi Stadium, starting at 2pm. Entry is free for Wanderers members.
