  • Tomi Torpedo Sinks Mariners

    mack

A wondergoal from Tomi Juric & Youssouf Hersi rounding off a fine team attack secured a 2-0 win against the Central Coast Mariners.

Western Sydney came into the match lacking several key players. Mark Bridge, Aaron Mooy, Brendon Santalab were all out of the team due to nagging injury. Tomi Juric the key return for the Wanderers, Tahj Minniecon was elevated to the starting lineup with Kwabena Appiah & Jason Trifiro coming onto the bench.

The key moment of the game came after 20 minutes when two deflections were ended with a world class goal. A Hersi cross deflected into the path of Iacopo La Rocca, the Italian midfielder tried to curl his snapshot but that also deflected off a Central Coast defender. The ball looped into the air in the path of Juric, who instantly turned and fired a jumping side volley past the stranded Liam Reddy.

The best chance of the game for the Central Coast fell to Marcos Flores in the 25th minute. A cross to the far post found Mile Sterjovski who got around Jerome Polenz. Ante Covic rushed out to attempt to smother only for the ball to fall to Flores. The out of form playmaker couldn't bury the chance, as his tame effort ran along the ground only as far as Matthew Spiranovic who cleared the ball off the line.

Western Sydney punished the Mariners for their failure to score minutes later, La Rocca ignored the offside run of Hersi to find Shinji Ono lurking on the wing, the Japanese international ran onto the ball and delivered a low cross along the 6 yard box, with Hersi played on by Ono no Mariner defenders were able to impose on Hersi who stabbed the ball over Reddy.

Central Coast had little answer to the Wanderers domination, the few chances the Mariners created they weren't able to finish and they were punished for their inadequacy. If Tomi Juric can stay fit he will force his way into the Australian national team picture for the World Cup and so will Matthew Spiranovic who could be the answer to the long suffering question of a natural ball playing central defender. The three points puts the Wanderers only 2 points behind league leaders the Brisbane Roar, and gives the Red & Black a 4 point gap over the chasing pack of Melbourne Victory, Newcastle & Sydney FC.

The Wanderers next match is Saturday the 28th of December against the Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park.

Tonight was just a class performance. No poor Wanderers player anywhere. If Juric keeps playing like that, he could find himself on a plane to Brasil. If Sprianovic has more performances like that, he'll be continuing his career in Europe.

The atmosphere was awesome too. The RBB was great as was the crowd participation, The camera phone lighting was very unique and added something else too. It was just one of those top games and I had a somewhat similar feeling tonight to when we defeated Adelaide 6-1 and it was the first time we did WDWSF with the other stands.

you could tell that the mariners played on thursday night and that we had a weeks break, from kickoff their midfield looked lethargic and that immediately placedthe pressure on their defenders.

of Juric isnt in the next socceroos squad then #PostecoglouOut

weve got to keep this kid and get a solid transfer fee out of him from a european club

2 big things for me that changed in this game.

    1. Juric up front. Absolutely class. He has the skill, the hunger, and the right amount of arrogance/confidence to be a great number 9!

    2. The tactical change of no Bridge and having both Tahj and Kubi outwide along with Hersi. This meant so much more width, more space, more variety and more pace. It opened up the right side for hersi and polenz as well as leaving the mariners second guessing with alot of great attacks down the right. Also loved the fact they switched wings also.

Bridge will find it hard to break in after that. Hope Tahj is ok, had a cracker of a game, Kubi also has just grown in confidence and ability.

Last night was Wanderland at its best. Great RBB performance, smashed the Mariners to get our Grand Final revenge, stadium was rocking and going off. Reminded me of the best games of last season. Bring on 2014.

You're right there just wanted to say Bridge was out injured this game not tactics.

A Cove-loving Smurf (former friend of mine back in the day) was complaining on Twitter that the RBB are always singing the same songs over and over again for too long - he likened us to Katy Perry music... I don't know about you but that's not really that much of an insult. Like her or not, she's pretty good looking and has made a lot of money from 'singing'....

Complete domination for pretty much the entire 90mins.

I was getting comfortable with Haliti up front as he'd put in a couple of good performances but Tomi is on an entirely new level. Every time he gets the ball you feel like something's going to happen and he'll shoot as soon as he sees an opening.

Everyone's been rightly praising Spira for his performance but I think D'Apuzzo had one of his best games for us. His passing was good compared to earlier in the season when he was prone to giving it away a little too often and he had the confidence to take his marker on, with the brain to know when it wasn't on and release the ball instead.

It was also interesting to see how Popa kept swapping our wingers through the match. I'll have to watch the replay to see it better but it was interesting and seemed to work.

Now we need the 3 points against Victory. Brisbane will probably stomp ESFC so we need to stay with them plus it'll make the gap between the top 2 and the chasing pack even bigger.

Everyone did well.... we had 2 beasts at either end of the field. Spira and Juric. Love watching these guys getting better and better!!!

Ono miss in the first half OMG that's the second or third one this season he has blazed over the bar drop him  ;)

Great game all round i think.

What a difference having Ono, Juric and Hersi playing together makes, it seemed to lift the play of the whole team. Spiras goal line block epic stuff. add mooy to last nights mix and its GF here we come.

Thought the Capos did a good job as well  rite chants at the rite time, loved the lights. loved the whole ground WDYSF, loved everything really!

    Definately :)

He has been somewhat poor of late has D'Apuzzo but last night he showed that he can attack and linked up well with Tahj.

Also noticed that Hersi and Tahj swapped wings a few times - he doesn't normally do that with Bridge really.

Couldn't make it out to the game yesterday nor could I find a screen to watch it on. Looks like it was a corker! Bloody spewin'!! My mate kept me up to date through text. Sounds like it was a magic performance all round. Top stuff.

I think it might be Poljak missing out because La Rocca can play as a utility. Personally, I prefer Poljak, but tactically I feel La Rocca will provide more options.

In saying that, we'll need an enforcer for Asia, and Poljak is great at that IMO.

    In Popa We Trust.

Graham Arnold just didnt have any answers for defeating us

He would have been better off not turning up.

lol i couldnt believe that they have not updated the screen, in the end we dominated the match, they had no answers for us and seemed to have a very poor match though got very close to scoring when Spira cleared it off the line, they just didnt seem in the match tonight, still it was a great match by us and was very nice to watch

best performance both on and off the pitch I though......

juric really reminds me of mark viduka , big , string with quick feet , who if he keeps going as he is , may get on that plane to brazil....caused havoc all night , but was glad popa took him off as being on a yellow , you could see the mariners winding him up

defensively apart from a few half chances and a goal line clearance , we looked very solid....polenz with nearly goal of the year would have bought the house down (still wondering where an extra 5K empty seats were)

thought the noise was top class last night , poor little south stands needs some help with their we sing for wanderers , but all round was a brilliant effort..........the light show looked good , not sure if it should stick around though

well done to all , bring on victory
