  • Wanderers Storm Into ACL 2nd Round

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers demolished Guizhou Renhe 5-0, finishing first in their AFC Champions League group and booking their place in the Round of 16.

Even though the Wanderers could have progressed with a loss depending on other results, Tony Popovic and his charges took destiny by the scruff of the neck and gave Guizhou a thrashing for the ages. The visitors Guizhou had no chance of qualification and sent a small travelling party that only included three substitutes and no reserve keeper.

The lack of interest from the Chinese Super League team showed very early, with Shannon Cole opening the scoring in only the 5th minute. Antony Golec took on several defenders before knocking the ball into the path of Cole. He controlled the ball with his chest then hit a perfectly aimed side volley that glanced off the post and into the net.

Despite the total domination of the match by the home side they were unable to push through a second goal before the half-time whistle. Guizhou came out stronger in the second half, but were never truly at the races with their second string lineup.

Guizhou were the architects of their own demise as Labinot Haliti pounced on a dreadful defensive error. Tomi Juric pressured the Guizhou back four into a suicidal back pass that allowed Haliti to take two touches into the box before side footing past the hapless goalkeeper.

The Wanderers put a third on the scoreboard in the 80th minute, from a in-swinging corner the Guizhou defence couldn't clear, and after a handball shout was turned down the referee then awarded a clear cut penalty as Michael Beauchamp was hauled down inside the 6 yard box by Guo Sheng while the big defender was trying to offload to a Red & Black team-mate. Aaron Mooy was substituted moments before the incident, and with perhaps his first touch of the night Mooy calmly stroked the ball into an empty net with the keeper diving the wrong way.

The Tuesday night got even better in the 84th minute, departing Wanderers legend Shinji Ono wrote another chapter into the story of his time in Australia by absolutely smashing a punched clearance on the half volley into the roof of the net.

The night was finished off in style by Nikolai Topor-Stanley who attacked an in-swinging corner that the Guizhou defence and goalkeeper couldn't even get close to. From point blank range and an empty net Topor-Stanley couldn't miss, securing a 5-0 result, the biggest ever by an Australian side in the AFC Champions League. The win secured top spot in the group, setting the stage for a two legged home & away tie in the Round of 16, with a to be determined opponent.

The Wanderers next match is the A-League semi-final against the Central Coast Mariners, at Parramatta Stadium on Saturday the 26th of April.

First fifteen minutes was very good, then they started feeling comfortable and playing decent football and we lost it.

Second half we came out half asleep and only woke up when the opposing defender put that through ball in for Haliti

I can only imagine what will happen to those young Chinamen. Probably get whipped when they get home  :cheeky:

They actually started to play well in the 2nd half and just committed suicide with the backpass through ball to Haliti. From there there heads dropped and the gates opened. The goals Popa has predicted would flow in soon came tonight.

Lets enjoy this for what it is... if you wanted to nitpick you could say Beachamp was very shakey at time but 5 nil - Woohoo  :woah:

Great to see Shinji get some time in his legs for Saturday. Juric played a lot tonight wonder if he backs up Saturday. Surely he should be okay seeing he missed the away trip.

Fingers crossed we get mariners now in round of 16!

    Well Done Boys!

    Way to make a statement.

Yes, the Chinese team were poor (they did send in their reserves/juniors as they had nothing to play for) but 5-0!

Good confidence booster before the CCM game.

Oh dear lord no no no no no. I can't handle another trip to Gosford or the Mariners again after this weekend. We've already played them in 8 competitive matches (or will on Saturday), we don't need to make it 10.

Gosford on a Tuesday or Wed night? No thanks. Depending on scheduling, it's possible we might have to play a R16 match 2 days after the Grand Final.

How ******* fun was that game to watch! Not the best technical display, but surely it'll pump the boys up going in to the weekend.

Was watching the beers being thrown around in the RBB. At first the beers were up spraying everyone but when there was so many goals people were throwing empty cups instead. Guess there wasn't enough time to reload haha.

Dreary to watch in the first half with misplaced passing from both teams, then the place came alive and I was loving it.

It was a game of two halves.... :xnod:

Better than the team travelling to Japan 2 days after the GF.

    • Best shown by a chance Toure had when an Indonesian player had fallen over, he had a simple ball about 10 meters that would have put one of our attackers clean through for a one on one. He over-hit it and ruined the chance. Also falling for the same old Asian team diving & time wasting, by giving away stupid fouls to let them fall over and sit on the ground for minutes. 11 minutes stoppage time is probably half what it deserved.
    • Yet again, a failure of pace and power football over technically skilled football in on display in the Olyroos vs Indonesia.  We need to develop skills over pace at all levels
    • Milanovic & Brook should have been on the next flight home at half-time.
