  • Gallop & De Bohun Must Support Football Or Quit

    mack

David Gallop & Damien De Bohun must immediately accede to the demands of Australian football supporters, or resign their posts.

This afternoon David Gallop made one of the most stilted, rattled press conferences I've ever seen outside of a political leader vanquished at an election or leadership ballot.

After a week of his flash card reading, empty headed rhetoric spewing minion Damien de Bohun being pilloried by the Australian football media and supporters (both active and non-active) across various forms of media, another example of the anti-football media popped their head over the parapet to take yet another shot at football. Once again, football supporters were compared to terrorists.

As that article filtered through the football community and scorn was poured on both the writer who penned it, and the newspaper that allowed the trash to be published, the FFA organised a press conference for 2pm.

A cautious optimism began to sprout, surely David Gallop would return from his week long Indian junket, right the wrongs, put the flip flopping over bans into the past, declare an independent appeals process, express anger over the leak of the ban list, and to vehemently support the code he runs against the disgraceful actions of the anti-football media, both in publishing the confidential FFA ban list and their ongoing comparison to cold blooded murderers.

The moment he opened up his speech in full flight, the first utterance of "zero tolerance" dashed any of my hopes that the FFA had been listening to the simple demands of the various active supporter groups, and indeed the demands of the wider football community to defend the sport from those who would rather it 'go back to where it came from' because it is 'un-Australian'.

His second sentence destroyed what little goodwill the FFA leadership had to those I saw react, as Gallop casually dismissed the abysmal leak of the ban list, with no apology for his organisation allowing it to be published without any legal intervention. With no acknowledgement of the loss and hurt caused by Rebecca Wilson in her publishing of this private document. He made no defence of the sport against Wilson, Jones or the substandard hack who posted the latest article this morning. It was a lie down, a refusal to do what should have been simple. To defend the sport he runs. I'd call it a dog act, but a dog will fight to the death to protect a member of the pack.

    Gallop was spineless.

David Gallop's failure to defend football was an abrogation of his duties to every single person who loves the game. On that fact alone he should quit his post.

The next point was all the proof I needed to confirm my previous position that the FFA simply do not listen. The appeals process which a month ago didn't exist according to Damien de Bohun, then had 'existed all along' and finally 'was being introduced' from last Saturday, only needed "fine tuning". Gallop listed a series of trinkets in an attempt to distract the supporters from the actual issue, that being his complete failure to introduce a transparent, independent banning process. One of those trinkets was a thought bubble of "community service" to reduce a ban. It completely missed the point. If I were unjustly banned, I would not do a second of "community service". It would imply that I agree that I was guilty when I was not. What I would want, is an appeal process that could rightly clear my name.

    • It is not morally right that the FFA can ban without an appeal process.
    • It is not just that the FFA can ban without giving the banned person the evidence that lead to the ban.
    • Letting someone do "community service" to reduce an incorrect ban is not right.
    • Having an ex-player on the FFA ban board does not change the fact the system is broken.
    • Hatamoto compiling secret dossiers that have no guarantee of staying secret is a breach of privacy waiting to happen.
    • It is not justice when a person has to go directly through their club, instead of through the organisation that banned them in the first place.
    • It is not right that the FFA require someone to prove their innocence, instead of having their guilt proven by their accuser.
    • Another person being banned correctly for using a flare, or invading the pitch or any other negative action does not make an incorrect ban with no appeal justified.

Gallop closed his conference with a condescending remark that football supporters should "use their energy positively", as if we were just another one of his minions, that we should shut up and do what he says. He described the energy that the supporters bring for football as a "growth strategy".

Growth strategy. A soul-less, corporate buzz word that reduces the life long passion one has for football to one of his prized "metrics".

    Gallop is a disgrace.

He has no passion for the sport. He has failed to listen to supporters both active and non-active regarding the ban process. He has failed to defend our sport against rampant and disgusting gutter trash members of the anti-football media. This coming in a season where he already angered the PFA with his CBA negotiation tactics. This protest is about more than just the ban process, it is about the FFA and how their organisation reflects an attitude of apathy toward the sport they run.

If Gallop cannot stand up for football his position is untenable and he should resign before he damages the sport even further.

If he refuses, Steven Lowy should give him & De Bohun the tap on the shoulder and appoint someone who actually cares about the sport and will defend it.

The RBB will be boycotting their next match. The Cove have made a statement that they will be non-active and vacating their core bays. Reportedly there are other active support groups who will follow suit with a boycott, walkouts or silent protests.

And this week will not be the end of the protests if Gallop continues to be derelict in his his duty to football.

    Mack,

Well said. I fear we haven't heard the worst of it yet. Next step in this comical drama: Lowy the son finally speaking up (after having been given permission by daddy) letting the public know what a wonderful job Gallop and DdB are doing in keeping louts, grubs, and terrorists at bay, and giving his boys a pay rise and contract extension.

As with coaches, it's when the board publicly announces they are 100% behind Gallop and dB and these chaps have their full support and confidence in the coming years that we know their days are numbered.  That's the announcement to watch for.

I don't think Gallop knows how serious this is starting to become. WSW as a club listened to the supporters and look what happened. It's time for the FFA to do the same as it is the only way this whole mess can be fixed. Just listen to what the supporters want.

My honest fear is that nothing will change as gallop appeases the stakeholders who matter (to him) and gambles that fans won't boycott for long anyway. I fear this because I think a lot of people won't have the stomach for a long boycott and the FFA are probably quite pleased not to have to worry about the RBB.

Really depends on how many people are at the games. I hate to say it but hopefully hardly anyone turns up and it might show them where their priorities need to be, with the fans. Treating fans with respect is how we will grow this game.

Funny thing is these ffa pricks gallop and de bohun keep saying 'we are football'. Go **** yourselves... we fans are football, those priks only started being 'football' as you say, when you joined the ffa and got a big fat paycheck to be 'football'. Before that both were very much 'sockah'.. and will go back to being 'sockah' when they get the arse. On the inside, they still are 'sockah' clearly.

The pressure is ramping up on both Gallop and De Bohun. Incredibly the show of power and solidarity by the fans, led largely by the RBB, has swung the conversation in the media. Our statements are being quoted verbatim, comment pieces are calling for them to step down, and Wilson's piece (along with Jones'et al's commentary) has been marginalised.

We are ascendant. A strong showing this weekend will make their continuation untenable. Getting rid of the rubbish at the FFA may well be the best contribution fans make to our beloved game.

Yes - Gallop and De Bohun to be sacked.

Just reading the report in The Guardian - the readers' comments are unanimous in slamming Gallop.

We need to add more - they may not read this forum, but they read every msm article.

    True... so

    • Gallop and DdB sacked (obviously)
    • Failed WC bid needs to be addressed

the word metrics got me thinking...

Maybe a season long boycott is needed because a lower crowd average is the only thing they will understand.

FFA will replace all clubs then with a sanitized family-friendly version akin to the Wiggles playing football.

    Great piece Mack

Anyone else tried explaining some of this to their kids yet?

My son talked about the weekend on the way to School this morning and as usual meeting up with his mates behind the south stand. Told him there was a good chance we wouldn't be going and he asked why (after he settled down) Told him about the boycott (didn't understand that word yet) and what has been written.

He didn't really get it, he just wants to go to the game, see his mates, watch some football, have a sing, get fuelled up on some sugary things and have a great time as every kid should at the football. He came back and said 'so if someone like a teacher at school says something I disagree with, I can boycott school' :D 'No son, no it doesn't work that way' lol Boycott is his favourite word now :D  I expect to get a call from the school later saying my son is sat outside and says he is boycotting a lesson lol

Told him it is not for dead certain yet, just didn't want any major meltdowns ruining the weekend so got it in now as a real possibility. His mother could take him down I guess, as things stand now I certainly wont be attending.

Yep.... that's me. Explaining is tough.

Funniest thing is that my 8 year old knows the name of each WSW player by number (Shabow freaked him out on the weekend).

He even knows most players and numbers from the other aleague teams

My son knows what the RBB, Norther Terrace, The Den and The Cove are.

He knows all the teams colours, grounds and even noticed that the Jets have worn different jerseys in nearly every game this year.

But - He has no idea who the FFA are..... nor should he

This is all so disappointing. Especially when on the park times are as good as we have seen. We should be talking about the team and the games and instead it’s just this....

What is most disappointing though is David Gallop had a massive opportunity yesterday, a great opportunity to lead our code and make a statement where he stood up for the game and showed himself to be a strong and decisive leader. Instead he pandered to the News Corp, Alan Jones, Ray Hadley and Rebecca Wilson’s of this world and the ‘non football’ people with their stereotypical prejudices. I don’t think these people particularly ‘hate’ football.  They just don’t understand it and don’t care about it so they shouldn’t be commenting. But the FFA instead are so risk averse they would rather throw the real fans under the bus than upset this ‘mainstream’ media.

He could have said, we have listened to the fans and we are going to re-look at the banning procedure and work with them to come up with a process which is fair and transparent. That’s all he needed to say yesterday. That’s it. He also needed to say that the FFA will work closer with clubs, stadia and the Police to look at the antagonism that often exists on match-days. This would have indicated that he listened and that he understands. That he ‘gets it’. Instead he chose to side with the mainstream media because ultimately he believes that is the way forward. On that point he has confirmed he doesn’t really understand the game and therefore should step aside for someone who does.

Has Steven Lowy been seen in the last week or so?

I hope he is not afraid of the suburban terrorists

    This pisses me off too.

Brand new Chairman and he's gone AWOL.

Hopefully he's preparing letters of termination...

Yeah, it's weird. It's like they think that the mainstream media and non football fans are their future, even though there are thousands of people playing the game that don't attend, and thousands who support Euro teams who don't attend. Why worry about the rusted on AFL and NRL fans?

Maybe they are suffering from the same delusions of grandeur that Super League was when they broke away from the ARL and stated "it will be State of Origin every week"? Instead of thinking that they will be able to steal tens of thousands of fans from other codes and create new teams that will get tens of thousands of fans, they should be concentrating on making the game ('product' to them) better for football fans and their kids - the true future of the game.

    • Best shown by a chance Toure had when an Indonesian player had fallen over, he had a simple ball about 10 meters that would have put one of our attackers clean through for a one on one. He over-hit it and ruined the chance. Also falling for the same old Asian team diving & time wasting, by giving away stupid fouls to let them fall over and sit on the ground for minutes. 11 minutes stoppage time is probably half what it deserved.
    • Yet again, a failure of pace and power football over technically skilled football in on display in the Olyroos vs Indonesia.  We need to develop skills over pace at all levels
    • Milanovic & Brook should have been on the next flight home at half-time.
