  • A-League Season 2014/15 Draw Released

    Football Federation Australia has released the draw for the 2014/15 A-League Season, kicking off the season

    with a blockbuster Friday night match at Etihad Stadium between the Wanderers and Melbourne Victory.

     

    Update: The FFA announced several changes to the draw in late September which may render elements of the following article no longer valid.

     

    The Western Sydney Wanderers will be fighting on three fronts this season, the inaugural FFA Cup, the A-League and also Asian Champions League.

     

    There are 120 days (3 months, 28 days) until the 10th of October when the opening match of the season will kick off. The Wanderers will play Melbourne Victory in the season opener at Etihad Stadium. The Wanderers and Melbourne Victory each won 1 game over the other last season while splitting the points in one of the games of the season late in December last year.

     

    Western Sydney will contest the Asian Champions League quarter-final against Guangzhou Evergrande over two legs, the home leg on the 20th of August and the away trip on the 27th. The Asian Champions League 2015/16 group stage, which the Wanderers are very likely to be entered into having finished second place in the A-League last season, will start towards the end of the season.

     

    The Football Federation Cup Round of 32 match has been rescheduled to a yet to be determined date, as it clashed with the ACL first leg. The FFA Cup final will be played on the 16th of December.

     

    The other matches in Round 1 see an F3 Derby between the Mariners & Newcastle to kick off on Saturday, with Sydney FC hosting Melbourne City at the Sydney Football Stadium in the late game. The "Distance Derby" between Wellington & Perth is the early Sunday game, and the round concludes with the Roar vs Adelaide at Suncorp.

     

    The Sydney Derby will be another series of highlights on the Australian sporting calendar. This season the Wanderers will host two derby matches at Parramatta Stadium, with the lone away match at the SFS being in Round 2. The two home derbies will be played in Round 8 (29th of November) & Round 20 (28 February). Other blockbuster fixtures include the Wanderers facing the newly coined Melbourne City for the first time in Round 11 on the 13th of December at Parramatta Stadium, and their Grand Final opponents from last season, the Brisbane Roar, in Round 4 at Parramatta Stadium.

     

    The A-League Premiership season will finish on the 19th of April with Perth vs Melbourne City. The Wanderers close their Premiership campaign with a match against Adelaide United at Parramatta Stadium on the 18th of April. The Finals Series will start on the 24th of April and finish with the Grand Final on the 10th of May.

     

    The Asian Cup, the premier international tournament for the Asian Football Confederation will begin on the 9th of January with Australia vs Kuwait and end with the Asian Cup Final on the 31st. The A-League is affected by the Cup, and as such the Wanderers will have a break of matches from the 6th of January until the 1st of February.

     

    Wanderers supporters can look forward to 17 games in New South Wales, which includes 1 in Gosford, 1 at the Sydney Football Stadium, 1 in Newcastle, 13 at Parramatta Stadium and 1 game at a to be determined location in Round 9 against Perth Glory.

     

    As always there are a number of matches scheduled outside the usual days, and these include the Wanderers Round 14 clash against the Mariners, which is being held on New Year's Day 2015 at Parramatta Stadium. Round 15 is on Tuesday the 6th of January against Melbourne Victory.

    Shame we don't have more away games in NSW. It is always a laugh going to Gosford and Newcastle

    It's just like our first season and going to rotate back and forth until we have enough teams for a proper H/A season...

    For away trips it's a poor crop this season, apart from the usual NSW matches, the only matches on Saturday outside NSW are two Perth and two Adelaide matches. Only three away matches on Sunday as well, Roar, City & Wellington.

    For me my interstate away trips will probably be

     

    Adelaide

    Wellington

    Melb City

     

    Then the usual trips to -

     

    ESFC

    Jets

    CCM

     

    And keep something back in reserve again for if we need another away GF,

    City Rail will be relieved - they can now schedule track work confident that they can stuff up our travel plans!

     

    Nailed on that there will be trackwork for Jets and CCM away. Already agreed between FFA and Sydney Trains.

    I would be pretty certain that FFA wanted Rd 2 and Rd 20 WSW home derbies at ANZ - but (incorrectly in my opinion) our club objected. This is not the way a club with ambition should behave.

     

    The above arrangement would have seen us away, then home then away and then Syd FC home then away, which is a logical sequence.

     

    But needing to start with a bang not a whimper, FFA then had to swap the first Syd Derby to Allianz in RD 2 rather than Rd 8 to have some better than usual impact.

     

    If you make your bed you have to lie in it - lets see how the Club ensures all those empty Pirtek seats from last season disappear in the season ahead...

    what are we going to do between 6 Jan and 1st of Feb or is that there for the asian cup? bloody big gap

    I wish they would move the grand final to a Saturday as it is a pain in the ass having to get back on a Sunday night.

     

    I hate Sunday afternoon GF's as well, would be much better a Saturday evening.

    Looks like we miss playing against david villa by one week. Probably good for our season, but would have been great seeing that guy playing at parra stadium.

    Glad that Newcastle away on 14th Feb is a 5pm kick off. Saves getting home in the early hours of Sunday or having to stay overnight

     

    I love the noise when we all march into the back of the terraces at Newcastle

    I hate Sunday afternoon GF's as well, would be much better a Saturday evening.

     

     

    Especially with the Tiger Airlines dramas. Won't be going on them again

    The more I look at the schedule the less I like it. There won't be much interstate travelling happening for me this season. If that's what FFA wanted: congratulations, you've done it.

     

    Our only home matches against VIC and Roar at the beginning of the season, our only home match against Adelaide and our only trip to Gosford at the end: what on Earth are they smoking at FFA? It obviously was too hard to schedule them for midseason.

     

    Piss poor effort by FFA. It will be a good day for football in Australia when DeBohun goes back to cricket.

    I quite enjoy staying over night for the Newcastle game anyway and prob will again even with a 5pm kick off. More time for beers in the Grain Store craft beer place :good:

    Villa should play us at home in Round 11 (13 December) because City's Round 9 match is rescheduled to March 2015, so Round 11 for City will be Villa's 10th/last A-League match. Edited by Michael

    I had just had a quick skim through air fares around the dates of our interstate games.

     

    You can easily get $100-$150 return flights via Tiger/Jetstar for Adelaide, Melbourne, and Brisbane away.

    We'll be playing three times in Melbourne this season, Twice in Adelaide and Brisbane.

     

    Perth and Wellington away costs about $300 to $500 return, so no way an average Western Sydney folk can afford that.

     

    However, for the other games, going to start saving :)
