Agreement signed for the sale of Wanderers licence

Football Federation Australia (FFA) has today confirmed that an agreement has been signed for the sale of the Hyundai A-League licence of the Western Sydney Wanderers to a consortium of prominent businessmen.

The consortium is headed by Paul Lederer, CEO of Primo Group and includes Director of Sabre Sports United Jefferson Cheng, the Pirtek director and head of international business, Glenn Duncan, and David Slade, a partner in the Australian branch of the UK retail chain TopshopTopman.

FFA established the Western Sydney Wanderers in April 2012 and has held the licence for the past two years. The transfer of the licence will be effective from 30 June 2014.

FFA CEO David Gallop said the licence transfer was an important step in the evolution of the Western Sydney Wanderers.

“The Wanderers were built for the people, by the people of Western Sydney,†said Gallop.

“That was the promise from day one and FFA has held true to that mission.

“Like FFA before it, the new consortium understands its role as the guardians of the Wanderers. They are entrusted by the members of the club to protect and build on what has been achieved.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Matthew Grounds, Guy Fowler and their team at UBS for the professional manner in which they handled the sale process.â€

On behalf of the consortium, Paul Lederer said the culture at the heart of the Wanderers’ success would not be affected by the licence acquisition.

“The spirit of this club comes from the members, fans and the people of Western Sydney ,†said Lederer. “Nothing will change in that regard.

“I have been a director of the club for the past two years and I’ve had the privilege to play a part and see first-hand what makes this club so special.

“The consortium has responsibility to ensure the Wanderers have a sound financial base and a strong administration so the club can continue to grow and be successful on and off the field.â€

Pretty much the perfect buyers. Already familiar with the ins and outs of the club and its finances; have football background/interest; multiple owners means that if one pulls out later the others pick up the slack and we don't go back on the FFA lifeline.

But it also means four guys have to agree to pony up when necessary. It's hard enough getting four guys to agree on anything never mind to also put their hand in their own pockets for the greater good/ambition/advancement of the club.

 

 

It is understood much of the hold-up in the sale has arisen from the final fee paid to outgoing executive chairman Lyall Gorman.

 

Upon taking his role in 2012, Gorman inserted a clause – ratified by then-FFA chief executive Ben Buckley – that allowed him to take a percentage of the final sale of the club, in addition to his salary.

No wonder he has been talking up the business for the last 18 months.

"The consortium has responsibility to ensure the Wanderers have a sound financial base". Is that code for we aren't coughing up big to bring in top level marquees and retain Popa? The likes of Chelsea and Manchester City didn't climb from relative obscurity to the summit of the EPL by being financially prudent.

Gorman is a very canny business man. This applies to his own personal wealth in addition to the jobs he does.

Gorman deserves a big lump of cash as a farewell present. He created a club based on the fan forums. And he took a heap of sh1t from all stakeholders in his 2 year reign - from the FFA, from the future owners, from the board, from the fans, from the media, from the police.

Good on him for his foresight in getting hold of the exit cash, I say.

Why the **** is this taking so long to go through!? We knew they were the buyers 6 months ago and they're still not taking over til the end of June.

I did a 10 minute google on the new guys. 

Lederer we kind of know a bit about. Big football fan, been on our board from the start so he should know what he's doing. From western Sydney too which makes me more confident he'll get along with the fans.

Don't really know what Jefferson Cheng's into, some sort of airline business. But sounds like he's a football man too so that's got to be a positive I guess. (On a sidenote, he was also kidnapped and held to ransom in 2009)

Glenn Duncan was head of Pirtek and was on the board of the Eels but quit after a sh*tfight with the CEO (or something like that). Might be the wrong code but he has experience in sport in the area which is important.

David Slade is a partner in some British fashion shop. He worked with Lowy for 30 years and they're best mates so draw your own conclusions from that. Not sure of what he might actually bring except for some more dollars (Lowy conspiracy theories aside).

Even though I should focus on other stuff, the phone was the first thing I noticed too!

Logic suggests so.

That's all I'm going on erebus but I presume it would make things a lot easier in terms of a handover.

I wonder if funds can be released "in principle" in the meantime for transfers etc.

Not happy about Gorman leaving. He is one of the few who know what they are doing at exec level in Aussie football. With half the squad gone and Gorman out it almost feels like a new start.

Unity at board level is very important, otherwise CEOs can't work. Just look at Implosion FC from the East side of town.

I have no doubt that the new owners took over with an expectation to part with money. I'd say they've done so already to keep Spiranovic at the club.

Those who were at the ACL win against Hiroshima might have seen the new owners. They were the three guys who walked past the RBB from West to East and shook hands with and embraced the players on their way over to the NT.

Interesting times ahead.

I think Pirtek owner Duncan had the shites cause Eels wanted to charge more for Pirtek to become sponsors on the eels jersey. Pirtek said no and then lost the contract. Duncan being the smart businessman instead decided to bid for the stadium name rights of Parra stadium and therefore his company now receives much more publicity. Eels now play at his stadium (Pirtek stadium) rather than Pirtek sponsor the eels. 

A smart astute businessman like that on board for WSW is what we need.
