    • Wait, so he's not in the squad?  So all the non football watchers who have taken an interest will find out he's not actually going to get game time and they won't be interested anymore. And then in 12 months time if he's good enough then they get the publicity again.  But if he's not, then what? All for nothing? Or as Mack said do they force Mulvey to pick him? If so, why the trial? Is it because of all the initial backlash? Because originally he was "marquee and we hope the FFA will get on board". Now it's a year long trial. This whole thing is weird.
    • Agree. He won't make it as a footballer. Not a chance. Football is much more skillful, more nuanced, more spatial than the other football codes. A top athlete, who's strong, brave and has good coordination may have a chance in rugby or AFL but not in football. You have it or you don't in this game. He doesn't. Nothing wrong in riding out a 12 month 'trial' and garnering publicity though. Financially it's up to Charlewsorth and Bolt to agree, the FFA shouldn't be using marquee funds. When he plays he'll be like a fish out of water.
    • He is only in trial but that trial will last for 12 months. Has to be a marquee based on the amount of money they are talking (in excess of 1m). Interesting that the general feeling from journalists have now moved towards seeing this as a positive move based on the wider media reaction he is receiving, he won’t take a spot away from the youth (mariners have since signed a number of NPL players) & if he isn’t good enough he won’t play. I still can’t see the positive in bringing a player who has never played professionally, media attention for all the wrong reasons & paying him big money. Will be a travesty if the FFA give them money out of the marquee fund. Will it be good for the mariners? It’s giving them publicity that they otherwise would not receive but aside from that?
