There are special insurance companies that provide re-insurance, covering insurance companies on the big claims (hail, big storm, cyclone etc). Generally insurance companies aren't in competition with re-insurance companies and it's a very specialised product so general insurance companies don't provide re-insurance. So then who insures the re-insurance companies??its the chicken and the egg Not really, you've got to understand that they only take on an event which likelihood of occurring is very low but the potential payout is massive. Your general car crash, home theft, injuries are generally absorbed by insurance companies and compensated via increasing premiums. The re-insurance companies take on just a small amount of risk but they get fairly well compensated for taking only a small percentage of risk of such an event that happens once every 10, 20 or 30 years. So there really isn't a market for a insurance company who insures the re-insurance companies because the main insurance companies bear the main brunt of the risk with the re-insurance companies taking on a very minor risk but the potential pay out could be massive. I'm sure, a re-insurance company could ask another re-insurance company, but that risk would be even smaller but it wouldn't be fiscally smart. If this were the case you're pretty much doubting that your actuaries failed to calculate an appropriate premium for the risk taken which would be an extremely very very very rare event. You can't mitigate all risk but these guys are willing to take a hit every 50 years (earthquake in Australia) for pretty good profit margins in the mean time. Link to comment
