A release clause doesn't need to be 'public' knowledge, or announced when a deal is done, but you a right it is hypothetical.

Then how does a suitor know how much capital it needs as a minimum?

That's what good agents are for ;)

If you announce a release clause when a player re-signs - you're basically putting a for sale sign up.

The agent helps the club determine the release clause, because he gets a slice of it. However, another suitor could offer the club without the agent ever knowing.

Messi has a release clause.

That's what Liverpool did with suarez, they resigned him to a ridiculous year contract on very good money and then come out and say buy out clause activates at $100m

So if Real Madrid offer $100m, and he wants to leave then Liverpool have to sell him?

He would be free to leave... If he wants to.

Don't have to sell him but Real Madrid are allowed permission to talk to suarez and his agent,

Just like when arsenal bid 40,000,001 for Suarez at the beginning of last season when they heard a rumour that his buy out clause was $40m, apparently he didn't have one in the end.

*spits* the name Suarez in this great mans thread!

Anyway I for one think Aussies clubs need to show some more backbone like Victory will Milligan last season. I remember when Carney left ESFC for a paltry $80K when his star was at it's highest.

I also remember back some I'd say 20 years ago when Kalac left Sydney Croatia for over $1 million (could be wrong maybe someone else can confirm - tried to Google couldn't find) I am sure some other people around here who followed the NSL remember some of these big deals happening.

So 20 years on our best players should easily be commanding xfer fees of $3 million Aussie. A league owner needs to stand united and tell Europe and Asia you can't just come in and take our players for peanuts. This is part of our football culture we are still naive in.

SUPERSTAR Tim Cahill has implored overseas clubs to show faith in young Socceroos, in the wake of their stunning World Cup performances.

Defender Matthew Spiranovic and attacker Mathew Leckie are the Socceroos’ most sought-after players, with English Premier League and German Bundesliga scouts noting their stellar performances in Brazil.

Spiranovic just penned a new two-year deal with Western Sydney, who are unlikely to budge with Asian Champions League commitments looming, while Leckie also signed for two years with ambitious German second tier side FC Ingolstadt.

Adam Taggart, who at 21 is Australia’s youngest player, has almost certainly played his last game for Newcastle Jets.

The A-League golden boot winner has an offer from Fulham, who were relegated to the Championship, and a Dutch first division club.

Socceroos striker Adam Taggart could join English club Fulham.
Unlike the golden generation of Mark Viduka, Harry Kewell and co. Australian players have been a hard sell in Europe of late. But the signs are promising.

Even at 34, Tim Cahill’s scoring exploits have attracted interest from no less than three continents.

Uncontracted Dutch-based defender Jason Davidson will find a new home, most likely in Germany or England.

James Troisi, who returns to Atalanta from a loan spell with Melbourne Victory, James Holland (Austria Vienna) and China-based Ryan McGowan could also move.

Cahill said Taggart, who could replace him up front for the final match against Spain on Tuesday morning (AEST) after coming off the bench against the Dutch, could make a statement in Curitiba.

“Tags is young kid, he can finish. He is raw but this is what dreams are made of,’’ Cahill said.

“If he hits the back of the net he could be the next superstar of Australian football.

“I’ve just been impressed with some of these youngsters. The way Leckie has played, the kid is a machine.

“Jason Davidson, Spiranovic, someone so cool on the ball, Wilko (Alex Wilkinson). I feel that some of these boys given the opportunity in Europe, given opportunity on the world stage.

Jason Davidson is attracting interest in Germany and England.
“You read about that (Dutch) left-back Juventus want, the right centre-back Manchester United want him, how about some people.

‘I’d really like to see some of our boys getting analysed and seeing what they can do. I am just proud of what they have showed. They have stood up and been counted. Hopefully they’ll get their shot at the title as well.’’

Midfielder Matt McKay said he was staying with Brisbane Roar after brief stints at Glasgow Rangers, Korea and China between 2011-13.

Now 31, he warned Socceroos teammates to be selective when heading abroad.

“Just be careful. I speak about finding the right manager (agent), going to a club where you’re appreciated,’’ McKay said.

“It’s not just about playing and being guaranteed a spot, it’s about being given respect and getting the opportunity.’’
