Wanderers Win Tight ACL Contest

Recommended Posts

A solitary and early goal to Labinot Haliti was the difference in an absorbing AFC Champions League clash in Parramatta tonight.

Haliti opened the scoring in only the 3rd minute, and despite chances to both sides, the 1-0 scoreline held until the final whistle after 2 minutes of stoppage time.

Kwabena Appiah spun around his marker, before sliding a ball into the box that Tomi Juric latched onto. The young striker connected with the ball while falling, sliding it across the 6 yard box and past the stranded Kawasaki keeper. Haliti reacted quickly while the opposition fullback tasked with marking him was caught ball watching, Haliti couldn't miss from 2 yards out in front of the RBB.

The Wanderers clean sheet was no fluke, as they played very tight in the center of the pitch, leaving Kawasaki fumbling around the edges of the field with little result. Their best chance of the night came in the second half after working in tight spaces on the left of the penalty box, but they couldn't squeeze the ball past Covic at his near post.

Kawasaki never hit the heights expected of a top tier J-League side, while the Wanderers continued a pattern of lost possession and lack of shooting, the early goal and solid defence was enough to score a valuable three points.

The three points see Western Sydney climb to second place in Group H after 3 games. Ulsan Hyundai are in 1st with 7 points, the Wanderers in 2nd on 6 points, Kawasaki on 3 and Guizhou Renhe on 1. The next ACL match for the Wanderers is the away match against Kawasaki on the 1st of April.

The Wanderers next match is against Perth Glory on Sunday the 23rd of March at Parramatta Stadium kick-off 5pm.

playing like we did last season with a solid defence being the key to hold back the storm of attack from the kawasakians. Juric looked fit and constantly wanted to be involved in all, good signs. Kubi blast with so much pace, he will get better n better with confidence and time as he matures. Just hope we get a chance to enter this competition again next season.

Side note, FFS some people are still not standing up in the RBB! at least get up for the poznan. Sick of blank looks on ppls faces when there told to stand up and participate and they just look at you like your speaking another language! :nono:

We are very much a one goal team, the old adage of 1-0 to the Arsenal is very applicable to us. Luckily our defence managed to hold up in the face of some very silky play in and around the box from Kawasaki, I'm quite impressed with Golec. To an extent we got lucky in a game that i think based on the play probably deserved to be a draw.

Man of the match deservedly went to La Rocco the guy is a beast absolute midfielder enforcer. I've also been admiring Kubi quite a bit lately, very much looking forward to seeing how he goes next season and hopefully he can cement a spot in the starting line up.

A great result and a fairly solid performance. We got opened up a couple of times but they didn't take their chances and one seas lucky enough to fall our way.

Kwabenna's best match IMO

i didn't get there until 10 minutes into the second half - so no none tell me how it starts.

You missed the most amazing half time intermission. It was incredible. For real.

Kubi was on song and dare I say it if JP isn't re-signed them Mullen would be a very good alternate.

Thought it was very gutsy win and hats off to Popa for his setting up of the team. And putting on Labi, Tomi and Brendon's for the final few minutes shows he was never gonna just park the bus.

'Twas the kind of match and performance that can revitalise team morale big time

The referee blew his whistle and someone kicked the ball to someone else.

"HOLDS IT!!!"

Does anyone know why the Smurf captain was at the game tonight?

Wearing red...

With a boner...

CckSakT.jpg

I don't blame him, has to put up with crap from the stands, the crap from the board room and crap from the coach. The grass is greener in western Sydney :)

I think this embodies a lot of what I liked about the performance of last week except we had the genius of Ono pulling the strings rather than bridge and Tomi gun creating havoc as opposed to Haliti who fell down numerous times looking for free kicks.

Overall

- What is it with us and scoring early in the acl, would be great if we could transfer this to the aleague too!!

- first half, capitalized on a poor performance by the Kawasaki team, we looked dangerous in attack and didn't have any (okay one) scare in front of goal. Thought our mids were key but kubi's raw pace was a delight to watch even though positionally I thought he was lacking. Kawasaki might have dominated possession but look where they had it? We were comfortably defending and it wasn't in dangerous areas like the second half.

- Second half, some could say we were lucky to hold on or it was lucky that they didn't score but it was about scoring goals and they didn't do that!! We sat back way too deep and invited pressure on ourselves where we need to learn to slow down the game and hold the ball.

- We are in Asia now, we need to acknowledge that teams wouldn't hesitate to use these tactics against us. I'm not saying dive, but it's nice going for another goal on the counter but we should look to use Tomi so we can hold possession in the opposition half to relieve some of the pressure we were facing.

- Smart not playing the high pressing game, when we did they were very clever to play there way out of it.

- Nice aggressive substitution but again would have liked to see with 10minutes to go, to see our boys not try to get caught out to high up the pitch and look to substitute Mullen or Ono. They were as brilliant in there attacking duties as they were in there defensive duties but towards the end they were tired and needed some help.

Players

- Covic some nervy moments for him with shots coming in and going all over the place, but what he did was very good

- Megsy/Golec great performance all night and hardly put a foot wrong. A couple of shots might have deflected off them into the goal but that would have been unlucky for them.

- Heff, why hasn't this guy taken D'apuzzo's spot yet? Definitely no left footed polenz but definitely more solid defensively. Struggled through the 90 but that is more about the lack of game time

- Mullen can see why popa might have scoffed at polenz's contract demands when this guy has played pretty good. He was solid defensively and bombed forward nicely but doubt he would have the ball skills or delivery that polenz has!

- Trifero, thought he had a great first half but then second half made two sloppy passes that nearly made us pay with goal. Popa smart to take him off before the 60min mark!

- La Rocca, yep what a rock, he looked good in the final third. He was solid in terms of his tackling and ball interception. He is one of those players that when he has a good game you don't notice with assists/goals/saves/last ditch tackles but by the fact that players around them play well

- Ono, looked classy tonight, still feel he is somewhere off his best from last year but his touch receiving the ball, passing, runs, the way he likes to orchestrate our attacks all beautiful.

- kubi, my only issue for me was his positioning coming in too close to the middle of the pitch and getting marked, would like to see him hug the touch line and receive the ball with the wing back to defeat. His runs tonight was excellent, made a few excellent passes but we all know he needs to improve his final delivery ball but he is a talent. For me, despite being quite negative I feel he was our most dangerous tonight in attack and deserved to be man of the match

- Haliti, apart from the goal thought he had a quiet match and didn't add too much in an attacking sense to our game.

- Juric, his first full 90mins since jan 18 is a shocker however he has had a number of injuries that seem to affect him just as he is about to get to full fitness. Some promising signs and just hope come finals that he is ready to fire!!

- Mooy solid 30mins

- Cole, hated how he pushed up on the CB and left the wing back which exposed heff a number of times but just love him for his versatility

- Santa, this weekend and today will probably be all the game time he will have for 3-5 matches

Conclusion

- With Ulsan drawing with guiangoiz meaning that we are second by a point. Our two games against Kawasaki and guiangoiz will be huge for us in terms of getting through. Theoretically 4 points would see us through but Ulsan and Kawasaki away will be really really tough trips plus I doubt guiangoiz will hand us 3 points like they did last match day

- a great win by the team but I hope that we don't have a acl hangover and our form can carry on through to the aleague cause we need maximum points the next few weeks. Playing 2 different sides in the space of a week make it hard for the players to gel with one another despite fatigue not being a massive issue.

- Hope that we learn to try and work on our ball retention especially when we are holding on to the game for our dear life. It will mean that we won't be sitting too deep inviting too much pressure on our defense. In this way we can use Tomi to hold the ball upfront rather than looking to just hit on the counter which ends up turning over the ball for another attack 30 seconds later!

As they were headed off field after first half juric looked like he was going off at kubi. Did anybody else notice that? Kubi had the best game in a while IMHO. We didn't have much possession but when we had the ball it was quality. If I was a Kawasaki supporter boy I would've been frustrated. I think it was a mixture of good football from us and luck.

I did notice a couple of occasions during the game when Juric had the ball that Kubi was the blatantly obvious choice for a pass but Juric ignored him. Pwrhaps history in training?

'Twas good.

Appiah had his best game in a WSW jersey

Agreed, sometimes I think his feet move too fast for his mind to process a decision - a few missed opportunities but still a solid game from him

WSW were very lucky not to concede in 2nd half. It was a great night and a good win which puts us in a good position. We need to start shooting more when we have the chances even with the weaker foot.

True. His speed makes him the perfect player to use in these ACL games where we need to break quickly on the counter

Juric went off at Kubi because many times in first half Kubi was out of position and also we didn't press their back line, Juric also went off at while team during first half for not pressing!

How good was it to not have a team ripping us up on our left hand side defence :)

From what I can see, D'Apuzzo (and even Topor to an extent) are becoming liabilities for us. Mullen again shows that we have a ready made replacement at right back.

Someone please take some compromising photos of Popa and give them to Heffernan...

Just kidding. Kind of.

Good game.

Can't stand the shear number of Muppet's that sit near us for the ACL compared the the normal HAL games - there is one woman in the bay over who just screams at everything, sounds like she is giving birth to a cow every 5-minutes.

56 wasn't bad considering the flogs, but they're getting better.

I thought we should have lost considering Kawasaki's attacks, just couldn't hit the target and if they did Ante was there to clean up.

Lambada still sounded like a Christmas carol  :shok:

It was good to see the away bay making some noise last night; it was the most active I've seen the cove - ever.
