Wanderers Into ACL Semi-Final On Away Goals!

Recommended Posts

There has been a bit of criticism of Shannon Cole, but I think he did well, in what was a monumental task at right back.

We desperately needed someone winning possession at the back and actually ensuring that we played it out and retained possession further up the field. He did lose possession on a couple of occasions, but more often he was successful.

Congratulations to Popa for using Cole in that position in this game. It was a scary ride, but we can all be proud of what our team of pre-season journeymen have achieved against the rich boys of Asia!

100% agree with you. He played really well and competed well against the level of play[ers] he was up against. He was run off his feet in the last 15, but could you blame him?

He put in a good shift for sure. NTS bailed him out a few times but nothing drastic.

Shannon was immense on our right last night. Sure he made a few mistakes but who wouldn't have against that type of quality! I thought he didnt get enough cover from Appiah, whereas on our left Haliti came back quite often to help Golec out.

I thought Cole had a great game considering how often he was let down by Kubi who was leaving Cole to basically man the whole right side of the field.

Gold star for Shannon, I say.

Cole did well IMHO. However, Appiah should have been taken off earlier.

Slept in this morning, the advantages of being the boss (self employed).. :-)

Fantastic result, 1-1 would have been better and nearly happened, but given the amount of ball Everbland had we did well to keep it 2-1.

The BS the Gonzo Everbland fans got up will not be forgotten..... totally unacceptable and requires action from the AFC..!!!..

No congrats from them, just excuses about having players unavaialble.

"I am very sorry to be eliminated like this," said Maddaloni, who was put in charge of Guangzhou for the game after head coach Marcello Lipppi – who watched the game from the stands (pictured) – was handed a one-game suspension for coming onto the pitch to remonstrate with the referee during the first leg.

"You can see in the match that we were united to fight and we created lots of chances, but we missed a penalty as well.

"Our opponent hadn't have any opportunities except for their penalty. So I am so sorry that we are out in this way."

Maddaloni felt that a change in tactics was not the reason for his team's defeat.

"We are always changing our tactics during games according to the match situation," he said.

"You can't say we didn't do well just because we are out. We are missing three main players so that is the lineup we had to deal with.

"We have the same desire to win as we did last season. We want the championship.

"However, the change of line-up must influence the tactics we play, just like what happened today. We played our best but we didn't have much luck."

The Italian also insisted that the result could have been very different if Elkeson had converted from the penalty spot in the first half.

"People judge a team based on their result but looking back on the game today, we shouldn't be too disappointed," he said.

"We had so many opportunities and what if we scored from the penalty? It would have been another story but unfortunately, we missed it."

i really want Appiah to succeed. his pace is such a weapon, especially late in games. atm he lacks quality on the ball so he's best as an impact sub. He's a willing runner, but he should just train at passing and crossing (maybe stay back after training?). IMO he adds a lot of excitement when he comes on.

Appiah was excellent first 20 mins at doing what he does best running at pace in the final 3rd area of the goal. It's a place which he can be deadly and also its safe if he loses the ball as we are in the oppositions final 3rd. Using this same style when we are in our own half only harms us in loosing the ball in our own territory and his defence and lack of awarness around him to see out where the opposition teams players are a weakness.

Not surprised, its all arrogance, cheating, and corruption from bottom to the top of their organisation.

Lets analyse them.

Fans (cheating tactics - laser pointers, death threats, etc)

Players (Arrogance, diving, flopping, whinging, crying, sooking, having this bling type mentality)

Coaching staff (Cheating - suspended coach is still giving orders and No sportsmanship. C'mon give no credit to the oppositions)

Management (Match fixing allegations)

GE are now definitely our biggest rivals in Asia.

A mock or a MUM chant is needed when we play them again in Wanderland.

Western Sydney star Shannon Cole has questioned whether Guangzhou Evergrande fans were encouraged to be hostile towards his team for the second-leg of their Asian Champions League quarter-final in China.

The fledgling A-League club lost Wednesday night's match 2-1, but advanced to the semi-finals on away goals following last week's 1-0 upset win at home.

Cole said local supporters were banging on the Wanderers' hotel doors and calling their rooms in the early hours of the morning before the crucial game.

The midfielder also claimed a driver purposely caused their team bus to crash - twice - on the way to Tianhe Stadium, where they then had "hundreds of bottles" hurled at them.

Laser beams were also reportedly shone into their eyes during play.

"We had all sorts thrown at us," Cole told Sky Sports Radio's Big Sports Breakfast on Thursday.

"The team, as well as it seemed like everyone in the city, did their best to make it difficult for us.

"People banging on our doors at three, four, five in the morning; phone calls throughout the night, hurling abuse at us and stuff like that.

"And then, on the way to the game, someone purposely swerved in front of our bus and slammed their brakes on and our bus hit them. And then a bus hit us from behind.

"We had a back-up bus, but then five minutes later had another accident.

"They did everything possible. At the ground, hundreds of bottles were hurled at us.

"But full credit to the guys, it was a fun experience and something we all had a laugh about."

Asked if he believed fans were seeking revenge for last week's fiery first-leg in Sydney, where two Guangzhou players were red-carded, Cole said it may have been.

"There's passion and then there's stupidity," he added.

"You think they're such a big club that the fans would have faith their players could do the job.

"But I felt they tried to take matters into their own hands - whether they were pushed or encouraged by people, who knows?

"Nevertheless, it's a story to tell for us and a very positive experience."

Cole said he had also heard rumours Guangzhou's highest-paid players were offered up to $1 million in bonuses if they won the match.

Oh this just makes it all sweeter.... However I do believe this should be taken further, if FIFA don't act we can send in Clive..... :ninja:

Wonder if the AFC will take any action over the laser pointers especially? When Saba committed a foul shortly after coming on it was very clear on TV. Also, the bottles on the pitch - towards the end - ended up delaying the game further for them... ha!

Just wow at that the fans of their side are arrogant, self centred, glory hunting asses that they had done that. Oh and I am sure that the match bonuses will definitely be questioned if it is true. The butt hurt is still going on and sucked in to them, karma happened to them. Hope we knock them out again next year if we cross paths!

They are nothing but a bunch of cheating carrnts. This needs to be looked into for the future of this tournament. Our club needs to come out and address the fans and playing group of what action, if any will be taken. To let it ride will just encourage further episodes in the future.

From what we can tell, player security was breached in the hotel, on the bus (both) and on the pitch (lasers). They should not be allowed to get away with it. Imagine if this was us at Wanderland.

I believe the AFC should be taking action on Guangzhou Evergrande as a club for all that crap happening pregame and during the game.

The host club has to ensure that visiting teams are safe when in the host club city.

A huge fine (not that it would worry their owners much anyway) and a game in an empty stadium should be the least imposed on them, to make sure they buck up next time and take responsibility, and if it happens again ban them from the competition.

The AFC has to act on this, considering the action they took on flares and banning tifos.
