EU tells Merkel: Forget your past and seal borders

 

 

Angela Merkel will be told by ­European leaders this week that it is time for Germany to get tough on migrants.

During talks in Berlin yesterday, Donald Tusk, the president of the European Council of EU leaders, said Germany had to act. “Leadership responsibility means securing Europe’s external bord­ers together with other member states,†he told Die Welt am Sonntag newspaper.

“I understand why, due to historical reasons, Germany may have difficulty setting up a strict regime on its borders. But, for Germany, European leadership responsibility also means controlling Europe’s external borders if necessary, energetically in a pan-European unit.â€

Amid the biggest influx of ­migrants since World War II, Ms Merkel has been criticised by other EU governments as well as her conservative Bavarian allies for welcoming Syrian refugees to Germany and expressing reluctance to see the creation of new border fences or controls.

On Friday, EU leaders will meet in Maltese capital Valletta, in the wings of a migration summit with African governments, for crisis talks to stop an expected wave of 600,000 migrants trying to enter Europe over the next four months.

The German Chancellor, along with many of her countrymen, fears the rise of new frontier checks and fences that echo the Berlin Wall and the Cold War era, when Europe was divided by the Iron Curtain.

Last week, the European Commission forecast a further two million migrants would arrive in the EU by the end of 2017 — on top of one million this year.

Numbers are expected to ­increase 50 per cent next year.

African governments will be warned that future development aid and visas for skilled professionals or students will be linked to their willingness to accept the return of migrants deported from Europe.

The EU is also looking for “third countries†to create transit camps for asylum applicants ­before they make the journey to Europe and to host migrants who have failed to gain refugee status, but who cannot be sent back to their country of origin.

Legally binding clauses in EU trade treaties, such as the ­Cotonou Agreement with African countries including Burkina Faso, Congo, Eritrea, Niger and Zimbabwe, will be enforced to require them to take their own nationals who have been assessed as economic migrants.

“A fine balance of incentives and pressure should be used to enhance the co-operation of third countries on readmission and ­return,†says a document agreed by EU interior ministers last month.

Support for Germany’s right-wing populist Alternative for ­Germany (AfD) party rose to 9 per cent in a poll released yesterday, the day after thousands of its supporters joined an anti-refugee rally in Berlin.

Backing for the AfD was up one point to reach the highest level this year, standing at 14 per cent in the formerly Communist, and poorer, eastern regions of Germany.

The eurosceptic party is the chief critic of Ms Merkel’s ­besieged open-door policy towards refugees that has bought a record influx of up to a million ­migrants into Germany this year.

Ms Merkel, whose approval rating has fallen to its lowest in four years, has been undermined by splits in her coalition as opposition grows to her handling of the migrant crisis.

Thousands of AfD protesters rallied through Berlin, with many waving German flags and anti-­Islamic placards, as well as banners saying “Asylum needs limits — red card for Merkelâ€.

what was the point of Malcy stabbing Tones in the back if he's just going to run with pretty much the same policies anyway?

 

On a slightly different note, I heard that such was the dislike for Malcy in high school, he had to spend his lunches with teachers and the principal to avoid harassment.

Because after he wins the next election he will be able to do what he wants without people saying "I didn't vote for this policy".

Why not charge higher GST for items that cost more?

 

I.e. 

5% for items under $100

6% for items between $100 and $500

up to 15% for items above $5000

Pretty sure it was Manfred who started the Let's Laugh at Clive Palmer Thread. It gradually morphed into the Politics Thread.... which spent more time banned than in operation.  :lol:  :lol:

 

 Zola started the Unpopular Opinions Thread, certainly.... but he wasn't around at the start of Club Pol.  It was full of lefties ...grieving with me the start of One Term Tony's govt.

 

I just went looking for it, and could find all the others but not the original.

The Clive Palmer thread was little more than a Greeny circle jerk which amounted to little more than primates flinging poo at an easy target.

 

Its occupants would scurry away like roaches under the fridge at the first sign of confrontation.

 

Comparing that to the Zola club pol creation is like comparing a paper aeroplane to a harrier jump jet.

This really is the fifth sequence of the politics thread chronicles isn't it?

 

It's that next movie in the series where you can clearly see the ageing process of the actors.

 

The two protagonists now washed up geriatrics BasedNigel and Mickisnot are trying hard to skool (lecture) younger generations in the ways of becoming Club Pol hardcores.

 

But the audience know it's still the same washed up story of the series. Because right around the corner the antagonists Wendy and Cynth are ready to pounce on the young meat.

 

And you always know there's one of Wendys minions (lurkers) in the shadows ready to get start punching on when they've read one of our posts.

 

Don't get me wrong, I'll still pay to see the movie I always will. It's just that plot line is always the same.
