I saw this guy against China in the AFC U19 Youth Championships back in October (although I saw the full game yesterday). I didn't notice him too much but he scored a decent goal.

Will he be getting a first team chance?

Unlikely at this stage.

We play a 4-2-3-1, we currently have a lack of wingers & are currently playing 3 AM's behind the striker. This youngster we are a bit more excited about because when he was younger he was part of our Ultra's (called the Red & Black Block but in Australia we don't use ultra's, we use the term "active support").

Even though he is a youth player, he has a senior contract which means that obviously our coach sees him apart of our future plans. Unsure how much of a role he will play with us this season.

Wait till February - he'll get his chance when we're playing 3 games a week

And how highly do you rate him? I've only seen 1 match of him and I noticed more of Joseph Champness, Liam Youlley, George Blackwood and Tom Glover as the stand outs. He is a midfielder though so he won't always go noticed.

Aussies are weird. From what I notice, they don't usually realize their potential until 21 years old. Some become very good, others stick around in the A-League. Honestly flopping in the U20's doesn't always mean a bad future. My national team (Peru) always does awful in the U20's but we always have players with serious potential. Unlike Aussies though I feel our players find potential from a young age and then lose it while others refind it.

I don't think I'm the best to judge, definetly a stand out in our youth team but it is difficult to judge how he will go playing for our senior team. Technically very good but in Australia we still rely heavily on a players athletic or physical prowess rather than there talent which our younger players struggle to adapt. I would say it is a combination of struggling to adapt to training every day & the conditions senior matches are played (in the summer as opposed to the winter) make the gap very difficult.

The biggest issues with our youngsters is that our league is still very young. Nearly 10 years ago, the old league (called the NSL - national soccer league) was scrapped for a model very much similar to the MLS franchise system. These clubs struggled (and still struggled for financial viability) to just maintain the senior team let alone a youth system. It has fallen on the older NSL clubs to produce our youngsters (especially since they have little incentive I.e. Make no money) but it has certainly had an effect the players we develop today as opposed to those that came out 15 years ago. One of the many issues is that our youngsters just don't play enough football & really struggle to make the gap from semi-pro football in the old NSL clubs to the professional football in the A-League.

It has only been in the last 12-18 months it has seen clubs look to invest money & create a youth pathway for those from u12's all the way up to u23's. The problem with players that aren't successful especially those that are around 19-21 that can't break into the A-League is that the level below the A-League is semi-professional & is very difficult for players to develop or be the best when they have to work another job 9-5pm 5 days a week. When you realise that there are only 9 Australian teams, 23 man squads & salaries limited by a salary cap that applies to every team means that opportunities are limited.

Take out the visa players there are 60 spots for aussie players in the Aleague.

Last week 4 players under the age of 21 started.

It's almost impossible to break into the Aleague

No wonder we can't compete on the world youth stage.

Shabow has received interest from all 3 NSW based AL clubs & Maia has also received offers from SFC & CCM

Our issue going forward, will be getting the balance right. We're going to produce a lot of talented footballers that aren't necessarily good enough to force their way into the AL match day squad, on a regular basis.

If your favoured position is #10, as is the case with Mario, it's very likely that clubs will acquire a visa player to fill that role in the starting 11.

Keeping hold of the Aspros & Scotts that come through our academy system, will be a challenge.

So Newcastle want him.

Serves WSW right if we lose him.

pretty much this, we wont ******* play him so why the **** would he stay around? i thought him signing a senior contract might get him more than 0 seconds in a senior match

The season is not over yet. Plus we have ACL as well.

There's no way to predict who Popa will pick for his starting side, or how often he will rotate them. ;)

that is true but imo he should have gotten some game time i mean if we want him to play ACL or later in the season we will have to ease him in at some point

I don't think that our results this season have allowed us to ease him in yet. Season 2 was different where we were able to blood a couple of younger players because we were riding much higher in the table

we should have the academy grads as our squaddies rather than just grab whoever off the a-league merry go round of player movement.

release lustica, extend shabow. job done.

Agreed but I'm assuming Shawbow wants a run and you would assume it's more likely to happen at mariners or jets... especially given next season acl football is extremely unlikely unless we win the gf

I do agree with the philosophy though players like Lusica, milling etc can now be our youth players if they are happy to bide their time

This season is the precise time to blood new players, our starting 11 up until recently had been mediocre at best. Bringing in new players is that chance to turn things around. e.g. Popa's insistence on starting young Sotirio has resulted in goals and a better understanding of the player and where he is most effective.

The other issue is that Nichols & Martinez would play at #10 over shadow & I'd argue that Jumpei is more of a central than wider player. Seems like we had the same issue with Mooy while Ono was at the club.

With our position on the table & lack of form, it is much harder to rotate. How many times before have we thought we finally turned our season around? A win against Newcastle & a decent performance in the derby means nothing to me.

The only real youth player that has been given an opportunity has been Scott but that has more to do with personnel rather than rotation. Our youth won't get much of a look in. Shame that it is hard to hold on to our youth prospects but that is football.

aspro has been in almost every game

Scott has had plenty of games

Sotitio is a regular starter

Baccus Jnr has had a run

Surely that is something for the youth players to look at. If you play well enough you get a chance

Agree with you Stringer. The only youngster I would've liked given another shot was Youlley. Looks a proper footballer to me.

He looked really good when he came on last year

Has the talent, but lacks the work ethic.

Popa called him in & gave him a hurry up about 6-8 weeks ago.

He's pulled his finger out since & was MOTM in NYL games nearly every week.

He finally got included in the AL match day squad & picked up an injury in the warm up prior to Perth game @ ANZ recently. My sources suggest club were disappointed, as it shouldn't be happening, if he's doing the pre-hab & rehab correctly.

Shame, coz it cost him the opportunity to play in the NYL Derby the next day & an AL appearance against City the following week, when Dimas was suspended

Very impressed with Mario when he came on tonight against Urawa.

His first couple of touches were very good, and he had a real hunger for the ball.

If he can keep up with that intensity for a full game, and start linking up with other players, he will be a very handy addition to the squad.

He has been offered a contract with Newcastle. Poppas been a ****wit all season to him because he had a dispute with his manager, hence why he never sees game time this year. Typical of popa fkt up mentality.  Things are now getting desperate for popa, and he offered him a contract just before the AFC game..  Personally i think he is as good as gone....   Wish the manager would do the same

Yes he's been offered a contract now, so you obviously know him or someone that knows him

But the rest isn't right.

1. That he hasn't played has nothing to do with a fight with his manager... It's simply because he hasn't deserved to play based on his performance at training and opportunity

2. Expect to see more of him in the next 2 months as he's improved and acl schedule
