Australian Football TV Rights & Death Of Foxtel Thread

Jukes & Carns, sounds like some solid conspiracy theory working going on  . The equation is simple for 10 in its current form it can't continue but this isn't the banks in the GFC. If 10 falls will it lead to a collapse of the other stations like the collapse of the financial markets? Unlikely.

The other thing that needs to be asked is: Is the model broken? Is the company mismanaged? If the model is broken then why aren't the other networks hemorrhaging like 10?

Ch10 isn't going to fail.

They appear to be forcing the Governments hand to ensure media ownership laws are relaxed.

Bruce Gordon (supporter of Wolves AL bid) has increased his stake, so he must be confident that the business is a going concern.

Replying to @DeanRosario @mahonjt and 2 others

Looks like #2 is being ticked off.

It's a fairly well recognised theory, it is reported on many major news broadcasters.

The model is broken somewhat. One of the major reasons 10 is in a hole is the licensing costs they pay for overseas content to American broadcasters like Fox and CBS. They signed a deal when TV was still at its peak, and advertising revenue has fallen steeply since the deal was signed, meaning that they pay a lot for their content, and can't sell ads worth enough to cover costs. 7 and 9 are in better positions because they have big rating and popular advertising programs. If 10 had the Big Bash running for 6 months with the same popularity, they'd be in a much better financial position (for example).

Also, if (and when) they are bought by Newscorp, they can conveniently renegotiate their broadcast deal with Fox for a better rate.

Didn't think we'd see a change in ownership laws, it leaves the door open to save 10 but what else?

Article predicting the death of the current TV rights cash cow for sport. Regarding TV rights and coming changes. Last bit of the article (Tldr)

"You'll see that the sports that have a bit of money set aside now and are prudent in their expenditure are probably going to be OK. The ones that keep fighting and don't have clear strategies to engage with fans, I'm not so sure."

No faith in the current FFA leadership to take us through the coming changes re digital media rights etc.

Don't think it will have any impact on the deal, CBS would know that sports broadcasting is a good bet (particularly when they got a great deal).

Was surprised it didn't go to the expected Murdoch conglomerate, but I am pleased that they didn't expand their dominance.

Interesting times ahead for the network and any future TV deals.

This is definitely bad news, thought it was longer...

It's a good thing the deal is so short, because it's a shitty deal for the league.

The contract has been signed and the deal is legally binding. FFA would be entitled to compensation if they killed it now.

At this point, if the viewers don't tune in, no FTA broadcaster would want the product anyway. The A-league has two years to prove its worth, or suffer the consequences.

Knowing the ffa we will probably have to compensate ten if they terminate the deal lol

Football in this country needs to be bold. We need a digital TV package... be different to the other codes with trying to tie ourselves to big-box broadcasters. Even if we started with Foxtel on-selling rights digitally. We have a Australian Football App on Smart TVs, tablets, phones, etc. and we have A-League, NPL, FFA Cup... all in the one place. You can buy a full-rights package for all of it... an A-League only package, etc. But, we're still living in the 20th Century.

Why would Foxtel want to steer viewers away from their product?

I agree that we need to be digital. I would be the first subscriber to a digital service like the NBA's, but it is not in the (short term) interest of Fox (I agree it is short sighted).

True... they would have to own the app to begin with perhaps. They could even segment all of their sports products in a similar fashion. NRL app, AFL, etc... if you want them all you might pay more than watch Fox Sports currently costs, but you might get people opting for just say the A-League and F1 apps... just an idea.
