The Western Sydney Wanderers failed to take advantage of their opponents going down to ten men as the Mariners & Wanderers played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Homebush.

With the return of Josh Risdon from international duty  the home side were fieldling a full strength linueup against the Mariners whose team included young gun Daniel De Silva and it was the visitors who struck first. After building an attack on the left flank, Storm Roux found Andrew Hoole with a cut-back, and Hoole fired in a weak shot that Vedran Janjetovic did his best impression of Andrew Redmayne with, dropping it cold in front of Asdrubal who had the simplest goal he'll ever score to make it 1-0.

Despite the setback the home side mounted attack after attack, and they equalised from the penalty spot in the 39th minute. Roly Bonevacia was smashed from behind with a shoulder charge in the box and the referee had no hesitation awarding the penalty. Marquee striker Oriol Riera stepped up and powered a brilliant penalty into the side netting that the Mariners keeper couldn't keep out.

The third goal was awarded to De Silva but could easily have been an own goal for Brendan Hamill, who had subbed on for an injured Michael Thwaite. Hoole put De Silva in own goal and he lifted the ball over Janjetovic with the final touch being smashed into the back of the net by a despairing Hamill.

The Wanderers came back yet again thanks to another less than adequate disaply of goalkeeping. Josh Risdon steamed down the right flank, and fired in a cross to the edge of the 6 yard box, Glover spilled it into the path of Roly Bonevacia who summed up the situation perfectly and emphatically finished past Glover and the diving Mariners defence.

Hoole saw a late red card after a second yellow offence, but the Wanderers weren't able to maintain any level of control over the ball, giving away soft fouls & mishit passes that allowed the Mariners to waste enough time to end the game in a 2-2 draw.

The Wanderers face Sydney FC next weekend on Saturday 21 October.

Llorente was our best by a long way. 

I didn't mind the long balls over the top but it was the effing offsides that killed us at times.

I think it will take a little more match time for the team to gel properly.

We weren't as crisp or direct in our passing as last week, but it still is miles ahead of what we dished up last season. When these guys get it together they will absolutely give some team a big bum smack this season. lol

That was one of the most flat performances I have seen from us. A stark contrast to last week. The one positive I took was Llorente looks to be one hell of a signing. Really disappointed with Riera tonight. He put in so much work last week and was constsntly pumping the team up. This week he looked quiet and stagnant! Still early days!

the best part of the experience for me was when we got to practice the match countdown not only once but twice, the first time we did it i think my heart died a little, the 2nd time i went on the top of spotless stadium to jump off, anything to escape that level of cringe

the other best part was when they blared this lyric all over the speakers

These n(word) ain't ready for action

If we played like this in the derby, we'd lose by 3 or more. 

 

Our defense is a worry. 

Jumpei was dreadful, but to be fair he wasn’t the only one

Id start the king over Jumpei for sure

I reckon we slacked off abit in training, 2nd to everything today

everyone boycott that crappy snitzel place at the southern end of the stadium please 28 bux I got burnt snitzel on a roll no butter no mayo no lettuce afl bogan running the **** I could pull better food out of my arse people with no food training shouldn’t sell food

feels like it, if it was last season the mariners would have scored at the last second so its an improvement but it was a bit of a nothing match tbh

No urgency, need to be better for next week

I'm not sure if Oriel was told to stay high, but he went missing tonight...cannot believe he and Fathead didnt tap in for the third...Llorente was everywhere - agreed that he is the signing of the season so far...

Gombau might have already have a parking pass....better get him a set of keys to go with it

They played us perfectly and set the template for other teams to follow. They flooded midfield with numbers to make it hard for us to do our short passing game. They tactically fouled and looked to draw as many fouls as possible themselves to break up play and slow the game down. It worked.

Horrendous mistake from janjetovic was very costly because we were in control up to that point.

On a side note hoole is a massive ****wit.
