Wanderers Hold Onto Derby Point

Recommended Posts

The Western Sydney Wanderers have survived a tense second half and a comeback from Sydney FC to take a point from the Sydney Football Stadium.

The visiting Wanderers started the game extremely strongly, going on the front foot and stunning the crowd in just the 3rd minute. With Josh Risdon getting past his marker, he ran toward the penalty area, then aimed a cross at the head of marquee striker Oriol Riera, who hit a superb header into the far top corner.

After half an hour it was another header from the Wanderers that doubled their advantage. From a free kick, the ball was swung in toward the back post, and was met by Brendan Hamill who sent the ball crashing into the back of the net to the delight of the away supporters, who once again outnumbered and out sang the blue covered fans in the 'home' end.

Just before the break the VAR once again rose it's ugly head, as it failed to overturn a Sydney FC penalty "earned" by David Carney. After getting through on goal, Carney threw out his arm and smashed Chris Herd in the face, followed by Carney diving to the turf. Unsurprisingly Jarred Gillett pointed to the spot immediately, and the VAR failed to do it's job by overturning the penalty on the grounds that Carney had committed a foul first. Bobo hit the penalty cleanly, with Janjetovic diving the wrong way.

Gillett was the best on the ground for Sydney FC, as they miraculously ended the game without conceding a single yellow card, despite their players racking up impressive foul counts. Bobo in particular whacked Cornthwaite all night long but drew nothing more than a foul, Matt Simon came on late, and hit Janjetovic late with an elbow & wasn't punished beyond the foul, Brosque & Wilkshire both scythed down their opponents on multiple occasions. It was another pathetic, biased performance that benefited a team who are already one of the better teams in the competition.

Sydney FC continued their comeback in the second half, and the Wanderers threw away the lead after failing to take advantage of possession deep in the Sydney FC half. When Kearyn Baccus lost the ball on the edge of the area, Sydney FC broke quickly, Baccus & Herd both failed to stop Ninkovic from passing on, Brosque found Bobo, with Brillante running onto a lateral ball, he fired into the legs of Llorente. The ball took a wicked deflection that wrong footed  Janjetovic to make it 2-2.

Matt Simon was introduced late in the game to provide his usual routine of kicking the opposition black & blue, and thankfully for the Wanderers he clearly hadn't been spending his time practising his heading, as he received a cross in the dying stages that any A-League level forward should have buried.

Hayden Foxe did his reputation no damage, but in the end he failed to adjust to the scope of the game, both after going 2-0 up, and again late on when Sydney FC were in danger of over-running his side. Barring a very quick signing of a new manager, he will need to look at his second half tactics when he takes on Adelaide United in the mid-week FFA Cup Semi-Final.

I want to win our FFA cup semi...but i dont want to play these ****ers so soon again...anyone else feel that way ?

Why part with so much hard cash to see such an inept ref and ESFC players kicking chunks all night long. Matt Simon is a crime against football, so glad he missed his header.

We had the right game plan today. Just didn't believe enough and let them back in. The forwards and some mids need to stop walking when we are 2-0 up and keep pressing to ram home the advantage. Foxe could have used subs better as well.

Our first half performance, with the fast interpassing and forward movement was close to the best we have been in a Derby.

Most players performed creditably: Riera holds off defenders and shields the ball so well; Risdon was dynamic; Cejudo's twisting and turning could undo a Rubic's cube in record time; Baccus was seemingly everywhere... though Bridge (as much as he is my favourite all-time WSW player) was off the pace and barely contributing.

Still, it was a great game and advertisement for football and future such occasions. Let's hope we can carry our first half passion and form through to the FFA Cup Semi on Tuesday, so that we meet our Derby rivals again in the FFA Cup Final.

That was a great game, and an advertisement for the A League, as Echidna observed on the match thread!

I hope a whole lot of people - both football people and non football people watched that on FTA, and realised what they've been missing out on!

Disappointing not to have held on to the lead - but it was never going to be easy to do that!

Our team is a joy  to watch...and it's exciting to think of how much better the players, working together,  have the potential to become with another few games under their belts.

:):)

Same. Can you imagine how they'll play now that they know what Gillett (who will likely get any FFA Cup final) will let them get away with? Bobo hacked Cornthwaite all night, Roly was smashed multiple times, Brosque & Simon both went in late on several players (including our keeper, long after the ball had cleared away).

And no cards.

Meanwhile Herd got a card for a tackle which didn't even stop their 2nd goal, just minutes after Brosque cut down I believe Risdon and stopped a promising attack and Riera apparently got a card for "dissent" while waiting for the VAR to ignore the Carney elbow & dive.

You can see in Matt Simon's eyes when he runs on the field how he wants to take someone out. He took out Janjetovic in no time. He even makes it obvious that he has no interest in playing football. That's why he can't score goals anymore.

Poor second half. Should of continued to attack down our right side. Risodon looked dangerous everyone he had the ball

Clear instructions from arnold to double up and kick the **** out of cejudo. No cards given for rubbish challenges or repeated fouling. If refs condone this type of anti football bullshit then the 'spectacle' we got in the second half will become the norm.

We've always been known as the strongest most formidable second half team in the league but the last few matches we've been adrift. What gives?

Can't agree with that sorry, I'd bet we've lost more matches in the last 5 than any other team.

Same nearly happened again tonight, luckily potatoes can't play football.

This is the thing about Arnie.

If the game is not going his way, he will tell his players to ditch the gameplan and get stuck in which is what they did.

First 35min we were playing sublime football, after that the smurfs got physical and were allowed to get away with it hence the reason why they doing what they were doing since then. And it was not helped Gillet letting the smurfs pay like this.

Simple fact is we out classed those ****s with our football and the 2-0 lead reflected that and from there,  **** just changed.

As for us,  we should have done a lot better in the 2nd half,  we should have won this game, smurfs hit us on the counter and the lead up to the goal we should have fouled their player and accept the yellow card.

Foxe should have taken off bridge after 65min, he had no legs after that,. He should have brought in Santa to go in for the win but it is what it is.

Respectfully, I'm talking more about our fitness. We seem really out of our legs second half.

Looked  very  good in the first half  and they could have gone 3-0 and then they got the momentum in the second and could have won it ,

but the penalty was Ridiculous and it charged the game completely .

Carney slows down and gives Herd a backhander across the face and somehow gets a penalty . Both the ref and VAR are blind or have I missed something obvious ?

Two nil up after half an hour from our marquee and go figure Hamill I was in heaven and the RBB pumping. The ref was out of our control. Baccus Bridge and Hayden Fox in the second half were players and decisions that should have altered the outcome. We let a two goal away Derby advantage slip and not happy despite some super sexy first half football.

People were chanting for Santa at around 70mins, by the time Foxe brought him on at 85mins we were well and truly on the back foot and were packing the defense, did Santa even touch the ball?

Brosque that **** can lash out and cut someone down from behind after losing the ball and gets nothing...that tells you anything you needed to know about the officiating

We needed an injection late in the game and got nothing, I have to much love for Bridge to have a go at him, but Jumpei should have come on with enough time in the second half to make some difference...tells you everything about the current state of coaching  #josepIn

At least we have a genuine goalscoring #9

tbh we should be doing more of what they do and fouling when there is any sign of danger on the counter. But always make it look like an accident and then reset your defence. You usually get away without a card if you do it right.

Instead we let teams retreat towards our goal and either give away penalties or free kicks just outside the box. Really dumb stuff. That last 5 mins they were all over us and inside our box when we should have shut the game out and not let them get near our box.

Jarred Gillet now the Eddie Merck of Australian Referees.

has kept his cards in pockets for teams that plus us like in our last GF against Adelaide when they hacked our guys without consequences.
