Usain Bolt > Kwabena Appiah

And yes FFA would fund it. Bolt would keep all the media journos away from how bad they run the league,  it would also get bums on seats from randoms for the first 4 rounds and his basically Dwight Yorke outside the field (which the media will love) and the face of Optus. It would drive the mainstream insane I mean they already on the bandwagon and he hasn't started trialling at the Mariners.

I bet if he plays he will Kwabena Appiah clone though

Yeah, Bolt hasn't needed a steering wheel before as it just involved running in a straight line. He was a world great in his area, probably the best, why does he want to tarnish that anyway by running around Gosford of all places on the Central Coast. Why doesn't he just go and work with kids in track and field and become some kind of Olympics ambassador or something. TeamGB have an amazing track and field / Olympics set up that incorporates former big names, why wouldn't he go and offer his services to something like that, bring through the next big runners.......seems to me like too much time and money on hands since retirement and too much time on FIFA18 whilst under his Man United bed duvet cover....big kid dreams...

He has already been  around Scandinavia and Germany training, but no, CCM are the lucky ones the world gets to laugh at lol

We have just come out of a World Cup and our lack of goal scoring open play footballers was shown up for the world to see. We created dozen of opportunities but scored zero. I can't see how spending money on Usain Bolt is going to improve that situation. A slap in the face to our juniors. Basically saying you are not worth the money....sad.

What next?  Maybe this girl may try a career change after winning her fourth straight Cox Plate this year. At least she can run 2000 metres not just 100 and aren't four feet are better than two. Also she can go around corners, unlike Bolt who can only go in a straight line.

Not entirely true...he does hold the 200M world record..and that is coming around a bend.........not sure about Winx though....seems more of a hoof it type player..........lol

Bolt would give the metrics such a boost, Gallop and little Steven wouldn't know what to do with themselves...it would be like if the thai soccer team were Melbourne Citeh and they were rescued single handed by Cahill...or the smurfs went undefeated back to back....basically something that would make each of them so hard they would just pass out on the spot

At least it’s pissing off some AFL douchebag calling it a “publicity stunt”

theyre just pissed off he doesn’t even know about their stupid little game

Yes how dare he call it a “publicity stunt”, how cynical are some people

It’s a great publicity stunt .They will probably get 10000 in for his first trial game , sell some memberships and get their sponsors some major  media exposure .

As for Ruining the integrity of the a-league I don’t think so . He’s  the worlds  best and most famous athlete in recent years  not a musician or a movie star .   The AFL/R.L/Eurosnob crowd already think the a-league is rubbish and nothing will change their minds either way . The rest of us will enjoy it for what it is , football  at the highest level in this country .

Anyway he couldn’t be worse than Appiah Kubi could he ?

Yeah 10k for their first game then when everyone realises he's no better than local talent the crowds will revert to normal again as the hype reduces. Mariners coach will be under pressure to pick him even if he's not pulling his weight. I head one fan interviewed last night suggesting he should be in the centre of midfield because he can run box to box.....fmd !!!

We agree.... but FFA are will do it the track record speaks for itself

Track record. I see what you did there.

If we’re going after untapped markets (remember there are more participants in athletics than league), we should go after the big guns. There are 700,000+ people who play golf. It’s got the second highest participation numbers in the country. They should be trying to Sign Tiger Woods.

Does anyone remember how successful the switch to baseball was for Michael Jordon.

There’s actually some respected baseball juges in America who think that if there wasn’t a strike that year - denying Jordan of much needed practice - he might have made a much better fist of it.

BUT they did send him to the minor leagues.  They weren’t silly enough to pay him a salary worth more than 90% of the major league players for a trial!

Darren Clark former 400 m specialist from the 80's covertered to rugby for the tigers

Jeff Fenech for the eels reserve grade in 1990

Andrew Symonds back in 2002 trialed and trainded with the broncos but never made the cut.

What a sad state of affairs.

We just had a World Cup where at least 5 of the sqaud were playing for the Mariners in their teens/early twenties. They had a club that engaged with the community, supported local talent, and WON STUFF.

And now this. No club reflects the total and absolute mismanagement of the game that has occured over the past few years more than the Mariners.

No wonder McKinna is at the Jets now. Probably couldn't work with Charlesworth.

Cogratulations Central Coast, really making our league look good.

Quote

By Ben Bloom

The Telegraph, London

In all available evidence, Usain Bolt is not a bad footballer. Decent left peg, knows how to throw his weight about and none too shabby in a foot race.

In a recent clip, he outmuscles a clingy defender and fires a shot inches wide of the post. Another shows him producing a fine turn with his back to goal before beating the goalkeeper and hitting the crossbar with a curled effort from the edge of the penalty area. In a third, he catches his opposite number unaware by smartly backheeling the ball across the face of goal.

This guy could have something, right? Well, before getting carried away, it is worth considering the opposition. The defender so easily shrugged aside was Mo Farah, a man whose undying love for Arsenal has a directly inverse relationship with his ability to kick a ball. The flapping goalkeeper making a total hash of Bolt's shot was Homeland actor David Harewood. And while the opponent caught napping for Bolt's piece of skill might be a bona fide World Cup winner, David Trezeguet is now 40 and has not played competitive football for four years.

This is the ludicrous scenario we now find ourselves in, a world in which people are using celebrity football matches to ascertain whether Bolt could make it as a professional player.

This week, Central Coast Mariners confirmed they were in negotiations with the eight-time Olympic champion about a six-week trial at the club. Last season, Central Coast Mariners were the worst club in Australia's sub-standard A-League and have not finished above the bottom three since 2014.

Not that Bolt will care. Since his retirement from athletics, the Jamaican has been at pains to realise his dream of becoming a professional footballer.

He trained for a period with Borussia Dortmund and came on as a 70th-minute substitute for Norwegian side Stromsgodset in a friendly against Norway Under-19s. There has also been Soccer Aid, Fifa 98 v France 98 and the Hublot Match of Friendship. Serious stuff.

There is an argument that Bolt has earned the right to do whatever he wants, and, worryingly, his agent says the A-League is just one of "various possibilities for Usain in football". But what are this vanity project's ramifications?

Should Central Coast Mariners decide to offer him a contract, their owner has reportedly offered to meet 70 per cent of Bolt's salary, which would leave Football Federation Australia having to dip into its AU$3 million (£1.7 million) fund for "marquee" players and pay up to AU$900,000 (£509,000) to seal the deal. That money could be spent on player development, coaching, the grass-roots game or, frankly, anything other than a wealthy, retired sprinter who fancies himself as a footballer.

There is also the not insignificant issue of a sport struggling to fill the void created by the retirement of its biggest name. Writing in The Telegraph two years ago, Seb Coe, president of the International Association of Athletics Federations, talked of "promising conversations" with Bolt about "a role inside athletics". Coe said: "We have to make sure we persuade him to devote some time to athletics in more than just an ambassadorial role."

As athletics' biggest-ever star, Bolt could be an inspiration to millions right now, while helping secure a legacy for the sport that made him.

Instead, he is hawking himself out to whichever football club will have him - a gimmick with his world-record 100 metres time "9.58" printed on his back.

Also - "sub standard A-League"?? Does he not know that Romario played here?
