Markus Babbel Is New Wanderers Coach

I think it's safe to say Babbel is getting a much longer rope than Gombau had, even with a full pre-season and two derby losses already under his belt.

Tbh mack, I think he is the man for the job at the minute. Whether he succeeds is still to be decided. In all honesty I hope he does. The club imo has to get back to winning games......not honourable losses or draws.

At this point Babbel hasn't had any rope.  Gumby had what 20+ games and made a shambles of them.  It wasn't so much he lost it was how he lost and his attitude.  Did you, as a supporter, feel passion and excitement at Gumby's approach and comments, his lack of passion and talk about philosophy...?

I liked him at Adelaide when he had passion and enthusiasm.  I was expecting that and there was nothing.  It was like he had a personality transplant between Adelaide and taking up WSW.

Babbel exudes some passion and engages us. As a fan that's the very least I want.  He made a statement the other night and I liked that.  The team on the park had a mixed night but they fought through the end and that's what I want to see more of - I didn't see it last in any of them really.  So after two rounds and an FFA cup loss they aren't stunning but seem to be moving in a direction that is real not imagined around some fantasy philosophy that may or may not eventuate.

Its all about confidence.

Whether we win playing sexy football or whether we win playing hoof ball, at th his stage its about gaining momentum and confidence.

Im certain Herr Babbel has a philosophy he wishes to espouse here.

Im quietly confident.

On a side note, i also think east sydney are at the twighlight of their glory days. This makes me feel warm and fuzzy.

They suck. 😝

How?

Its round 2 we haven’t played a single home game.

if he’s 15 games in and travelling like Gombau did I’ll be on his back too

There were people on the #GombauOut bandwagon from his first match for losing a derby (and esoterically, his "attitude"), while Babbel has lost two derbies, that's what I was pointing out.

I suspect barring an absolute major fail like finishing dead last that Babbel is going to be here next season.

The only foreigner contracted beyond this season is Ziggy and he's going to be non-foreign next year. Babbel will take a look at his options and consider. Hamill, Baumjohann, Grozos, Keanu, Bridge, Riera, Llorente, Mahazi, Sotirio, Risdon and Bonevacia are all off contract along with another handful of youth players. That's a starting outfield worth of players. Of course, this might all be premature, we might smash the Nix 5-0 and go on a run & win the league.

Just wanted to point out that Babbel has managed at least 5 professional games for WSW, not 2.

but those other matches dont count :P

dont get me wrong i think he will be better than gombau but he at least had a pre season with the team and he should be set to the exact same standard, dont make the finals then get the **** out of here, i do admit roly does look much better than he did last season but maybe if half the playing group didnt act like a bunch of whiny princesses and got on with playing football instead of throwing their toys out of the pram then maybe we would have made finals

Markus is meant to be this amazing coach but i have not seen any proof of that yet, Federico Piovaccari was meant to be an amazing player and how'd that work out for us? just because someone has been successful in the past doesnt mean they will be successful for us

he has coached 5 matches for us and how many wins?

Markus has inherited Gombau signings some of whom are either squaddies or are lazy (Kamau comes to mind) plus a lot of youth players.

He also has to rebuild the mindset/mentality still shellshocked from last season. Plus he got Baccus Snr deciding to be an idiot.

Plus the squads fitness was poor when he arrived.

He also has noted the match officials in the A-league are poor.

This

There has been no magic wand. But to me the team look like they are playing for him. The away draw at Perth is good result, I don’t see them dropping many points at home. The derby we were poor in first half but second half we were all over them, which I haven’t seen for a while.

He’s largely working with what he’s been given three signings are his, if which The two Germans look really good and Mahazi is what you get when you are trying to replace an Australian player with less than a week to go before season starts. They hadn’t planned on Baccus going, but given the unrest of last year, he couldn’t risk a problem in dressing room so moved him out. JP brought in a guy who he knows will do a job at short notice.

as for gombau signings, hopefully they will turn out ok, Tongyik, Kamau and ODoherty all have potential. But even if they do work out, squad is still unbalanced. At this stage Babbel is preferring converting Roly to a winger and Sotirio over them

If you want to include FFA Cup 3 wins 1 draw 2 loses

The club would have set out performance goals for Babbel and he’ll be judged against them. I doubt it is just League position, I’d assume it includes bringing youth players in and developing  the club as a whole.

As for the players behaving like whiny princesses etc. Its the leaders job to lead. One or two players acting up and you move them on (see Baccus this year, Saba etc in the Popa year’s)

Gombau problem was he lost the whole squad, which is on him. Admittedly not an easy job, but that’s why clubs pay big $ for managers. I really don’t see what else club could do, they had to make a call on what would give club best chance for this season and to set up for future. It’s largely a guess on their part, but another season of chaos and slipping back wasn’t an option

Jesus Christ, just let him manage the side, if you can do better go and get a FIFA Pro licence and start managing a team.  To many EA Sports managers on here think they can do a job.  STFU, You don't have a clue

Mate..chill.....People have an opinion, so what. We all still support the Wanderers.I do. Nothing wrong as far as I can see with someone having a different perspective or opinion and expressing it. I sought of thought that was the idea of forums.

Perhaps we should all stop saying Sotirio is crap, Roly is soft,Baccus Jnr is not ready for the top squad,Riera is out of form....or Popa was a better manager.....or.....We need a DM as ours are crap....etc...etc...etc....or maybe this forum should become one of these......

Babbel has defnitely improved the structure, style and commitment of the playing group in a short period of time. Those who know the game see the difference clearly compared with zero or backwards progress in the same areas from Gumby. We are comparing the same things that are visible, not intangibles. Babbel is far superior to Gombau and results will come. It's not about a free pass, it's about progress.

you do have a good point, lucky he did manage to get rid of jumpei who was being a little bitch, i still think if our players were better we would have made the finals but its kinda true not many people were on gumbau's side, now we got the entire team on babbel's side hopefully we can make the finals

Anyone else notice Gumby's passion declined with his weight? He was on the celery and water diet. He lost too much brain weight too.

Could say he was sorta 'celery capped'.

It's going to take a while to figure out how many months the ban for that post will be. Warning: Bad puns outside the pun thread.

Having an opinion is one thing, having a sensible, informed and knowledgeable opinion is another.  I can have an opinion on whether a person should put a particular cross beam at a location when they are building a 30 storey building.  It would be wise that the person not listen to me as I don't have a clue about building a skyscraper.  I may be a fan of that building but it would probably be best if I kept quiet about it.

Just because you have an opinion doesn't mean one should voice it.  Especially when it is coming from having zero experience.  Yes I get the being a fan ad having an opinion, but seriously if we are going to accept all opinions as having merit, you might as well make this the facebook page.  Why don't we sign Messi, Ronaldo etc.  If the comment is stupid the person should be told there comment is stupid

..........and that is your opinion.

The merits of a post(s) is in the eyes of those reading it.

For example, take the forum's favourite Wanderer whipping boy........... Sotirio...........some may strongly suggest that he is overrated, can't play footballl and should be sent packing. Others disagree saying he has abilities and just needs a good coach to bring out the best. Some are saying his speed gives us an edge while others suggest his lack of passing is keeping the team down. I wouldn't criticise the persons making either opinions just because I was on one side of the debate and an opposite opinion didn't fit into the world as I see it. Is the coach right or wrong in keeping him in the squad..? Is the club or manager making the right decicsion in keeping him ? Should I tell all the Sotirio supporters to STFU because the guys a dud or on the other hand should we tell the non supporters to STFU because the guy isn;t a dud...?
